Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017!! So glad to have you on board!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from the Leeds group can be seen here.. and our finished blankets from last year here…

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston,Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! Shock Wine

With your help we know we can do this

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. Star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

LEM it can be more cost effective to send via My Hermes. I had to do this with a whole blanket I'd done last year because it was over Small Parcel size and extortionate via Royal Mail. Other couriers might be cheaper too though. Postage is really expensive either way though.

Spindelina · 09/03/2017 08:12

LEM small parcel, second class is a bit under £3.

You can get 4x12" in a large letter for £1.20 if you arrange them carefully, but once you go over 8, small parcel is the way to go.

SoupDragon · 09/03/2017 08:26

It's possible to use lots of tape to confine yarn stuff to small parcel size.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 09/03/2017 09:02

Witch. That's a great square. The paler yellow in the middle really gives it life!

bookbook. It's lovely when they're still small enough to think you can do anything/everything 😊

You've already knitted the Little Hug?! You must have a clone!

Malcolm. So many colour choices! 🤣 Just PM if you want any yarn to see the colours.

Spindelina · 09/03/2017 09:18

Soup I wish you could do the same for large letters! I sometimes think that a simple row of tacking-type stitches down the middle would be easy to undo (one snip) and keep it under 2.5cm.

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 09/03/2017 09:38

Right, the consensus is to leave the square as it is, so leave it I shall!

Chipping, thank you! I certainly will PM if I get stuck for inspiration! Hoping to get my next square finished by tomorrow, then when I have 6 I shall send them off!

bookbook · 09/03/2017 10:25

Morning!
I have been using second class small parcel at £2.85. The big drawback are the dimensions. I squash them down really hard, use a plastic mail bag, and squeeze as much air out as possible, and then tape as tightly as I can. No way can you get the full 2 kg in there though....
Chipping - sadly, I am not superhuman - not finished the little hug yet - I am doing it in between Candy, Chernobyl and now Zkids blanket !

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 09/03/2017 11:13

Oh my actual goodness! I have just discovered how to do an invisible join using my hook and then working away the tails!!! Why did I not know about this before?! It's going to save me SO much time!

And this is the only place where I know you'll get my excitement!!! 😂

TheoriginalLEM · 09/03/2017 13:39

will make these up to 12 and post them -loving this so much

Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017
bookbook · 09/03/2017 19:42

Evening!
Malcolm - I have just had to go and look at a tutorial on invisible joins !! :)
LEM - they are looking brilliant. I am up to 9 so far, I also was hoping to get to 12 - they will nicely fit into the small parcel size ( I put them all out carefully to check today.)

MadisonAvenue · 10/03/2017 09:52

Morning all, I've just posted a 'small' parcel of squares - quite amazed just how much fits into that size category, it certainly didn't look like a small parcel to me!

KnottyAndPistey · 10/03/2017 11:37

So sorry to have been awol, have got Edinburgh's 1st Eight staying, it has been mad catering and hostel like here!

Hi K&P. I was planning my visit to you when you mentioned having a bunch of Rowers staying...

women were not what I had in my grubby mind😳😖🤣.

I hope DD & her mates have a great time & do well.

I'm doing fine. Not enough hours in the day to knit/crochet as much as it feels needs doing. I must learn to crochet with my (immaculately clean) toes! More Woolly Wool on its way to me from Wool Warehouse 😁 Squares being done, Pesky Peskies being kept on top of...all good 😊

Malcolm. Invisible joins are definitely the Bees Knees. I'm not sure why they're not mentioned/used more in tutorials etc

bookbook Yes, I misunderstood your post, I thought you'd said you'd sent it on, where as you'd set on it 😁

Lovely bright squares LEM 😊

IAmNotAUserNumber · 10/03/2017 16:08

K+P
You must be very busy, with a houseful of rowers and hugs.
I'm sending these today:-

Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017
bookbook · 10/03/2017 16:48

Afternoon!
K&P - so how much pasta/rice and cake are you getting through ( or maybe its not all carbs these days....!) Grin
Chipping - easily mis understood - it was a saying from my DM - she always 'set off' knitting :). I did it to check I had enough wool in truth , but I am doing a sneaky few pattern repeats in between other stuff -( I can then pop in in the post with some Candys Hugs and Zombie kids squares when I've done )

MadisonAvenue · 10/03/2017 18:50

That a lot of house guests K&P I keep telling our son that his uni house mates are more than welcome to stay. They're less than 10 miles away though so they haven't taken us up on it yet Grin
He's back shortly. Being at a local uni means that he kept his part time job so he does that on Fridays and Saturdays and stays here on Friday nights and returns to uni with a bag of goodies A bottle of beer is chilling in the fridge for him, much needed after a day of burger flipping.

Just browsing through books looking for a new pattern.

NormansNipple · 10/03/2017 19:58

Even the postie thinks I'm ordering too much wool! Blush

Great squares everyone Smile

I'm still working away on my stripy blanket.

Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017
MadisonAvenue · 10/03/2017 20:13

Blimey Norman just how much did you order? Grin

Norman your postie is a wimp - it may be very large , but it can't be that heavy - can it ? Grin

Spindelina · 10/03/2017 21:57

Need to do the ends still, but I reckon I've conquered spike stitch.

Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017
bookbook · 10/03/2017 22:10

wow, that is impressive Spindelina - I have been eyeing up spike stitch - have done one pattern with just a few in.
I have finished a square tonight, and started another simple c2c .
Hope to get that and another one done over the weekend ( snivelling here , so not able to concentrate on anything that needs much concentration)
I notice on fb , they were putting out a call for more Chernobyl squares, so am going to concentrate on getting as many done as possible .

NorksAreMessy · 10/03/2017 22:15

Parcel of odd weird squ-entangles on its way to you today from me....and from dear old dad. I will get back on it tomorrow and give DoD some more wool. He is happy to help and is MUCH neater at knitting than me.

NormansNipple · 10/03/2017 22:15

I wanted a spare ball of copper in case I ran out for my blanket edging, then I got looking at other stuff Blush

I ordered lots more of Candy's colours and a blanket kit to make for my Granny. Probably 30ish balls in total.

Postie was probably pissed off that they carried it up 2 flights of stairs to my flat and then had to take it back to the van again Grin

NormansNipple · 10/03/2017 22:19

Spindelina and bookbook amazing squares!

Norks It's lovely of your dad to help. I think more men can knit than I realise. I was surprised but happy to see a man in a knitting group the other day.
