Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017!! So glad to have you on board!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from the Leeds group can be seen here.. and our finished blankets from last year here…

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston,Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! Shock Wine

With your help we know we can do this

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. Star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

Chippin thankyou for the link, that looks really good, but stop calling me Granny Wink

IAmNotAUserNumber · 05/03/2017 09:41

What does everyone do with their cut off peskies? I hate throwing them away but I don't have a QC the cat to look after them, and as they're acrylic I don't want to compost them or leave them for the birds. The ball of scrunched up colours looks so pretty. But I do just sling them in the bin.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 05/03/2017 13:54

IAmNot 🤣

Granny Granny Granny.....

You'd be well old if you were my Granny 😂

As for Peskies, can you save them up & give them to a friend/school/nursery/childminder? They're great for art projects.

bookbook. They look nice. As long as you are doing the whole blanket & it's machine washable, and of course very soft against delicate skin, any yarn/wool is good for Little Hugs. I just want to knit something super soft and not acrylic. Bamboo is a good option.

NormansNipple · 05/03/2017 14:06

Hi Woolly your blanket looks amazing Smile thanks for the heads up about the copper colour nearly running out. I suspect my crochet is on the loose side so I think I'll buy another ball just to make sure I have enough. Then I may as well buy a few others to get the free postage - it would be rude not to!

I bought some wooden pegs today so I can make some little samples for colour matching Grin I'm also going to mark which are Candy's colours and which are only suitable for other projects. My dining table is literally piled up with balls of wool!

IAmNot I've seen some little dolls/animals with hair that looks like peskies. It might have been on the woolly hugs craft page, but I'm not sure. Could you do something like that with them? Last night I discovered QC snacking on a peskie! I've started tying them in bundles now, to make them less appetising.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 05/03/2017 19:47

Woolly. It appears to have eaten my post re your blanket! 🤔😖

It is beautiful. I love the photo of it folded up, it looks so incredibly pretty & snugly. I admire your ability to post it as much as the crocheting of it! I couldn't bear to part with it!

bookbook · 05/03/2017 21:30

I may be here posting while eating chocolate - I actually need to finish off my stripey 12" c2c. I'm on the home run.

Spindelina · 05/03/2017 22:06

Just finished knitting 12" of lipstick cables. It's not actually 12" square - more like 12" x 10" - but I am feeling glad that I spent last month learning how to crochet! Two rows of trebles down each side and we'll be good to go.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 06/03/2017 09:00

Spindelina. Cable is so stretchy, are you sure that it's not an easy stretch to 12". Better a little small than a little big.

bookbook please tell me it's a new bar & you're not still daintily nibblling at the one you posted a pic of?! 😬

Yddraigoldragon · 06/03/2017 09:11

Incoming bag of squares K and P, basic 12 grannies and some other bits.

Lovely squares everyone, so impressed!

Spindelina · 06/03/2017 09:34

Chipping it will stretch to 12", but it's naturally sitting at just under 10", so I wouldn't say it was a gentle stretch! I think the crochet will stabilise it anyway - it's very very curly - and not be unattractive (it's got a garter stitch border top and bottom, so something on the two sides sort of works). Might go for one row of trebles and one of doubles though, to make sure it's under rather than over 12".

Yddraigoldragon · 06/03/2017 10:29

How are we doing against the target of 70 blankets? I guess we are about 2 months in, is it doable?

MadisonAvenue · 06/03/2017 10:35

I keep wondering that too Ydd

bookbook · 06/03/2017 10:44

Morning! coffee time :)
Chipping - not same chocolate, DH scoffed over half of the last bar I am plundering the depths of taste testing out galaxy golden eggs, which fell into my basket . Not too keen tbh - too sweet , but I will force them down somehow
Spindelina - thats the trouble with cables - I did one and yes it would stretch, but as soon as you let go, it springs back!.
I've aiming to do 10 minimum, will do more if time allows - I've got 8 done so far, so if I crotchet rather than knit.....I may get a few more done than that.
It must be hard to guess, if everyone is like me, I plan on sending them all in one parcel nearer the time. It must be nerve wracking!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 06/03/2017 14:21

The thing with knitting, especially cable, is it's so stretchy, so much more so than crochet. It's a lot easier to attach when it stretches to 6/12" than if it's a generous 6/12.

It will be very hard to know where we are at with blankets, with everyone wanting to send their squares when they have a few, people not being able to do the whole blanket they thought they could, otherS unexpectedly doing one...😳 And that's only us! There are so many other people & groups involved it's impossible to have any idea, which is a pity really...it would be fun to have a running total!

bookbook. If it's just too difficult for you, you can send them here. My favourite right now is the Lindor Strawberry. Yum.

Spindelina · 06/03/2017 14:52

So Chipping, how wide do you think I should aim for "at rest"? Do you reckon 11.5" is about right? Bit less? It's pretty much bang on 12" long (much easier to work out how many rows to do once you're going than how many to cast on).

SpiralArchitect · 06/03/2017 15:46

C2C in petrol, grass and saffron.

It measured 12" when I started to decrease, but appears to have a mind of its own and has shrunk itself down to nearer 11", BUT it does have enough "give" to go back to 12"...

Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017
ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 06/03/2017 17:38

That looks FAB Spiral and incredibly neat.

Spindelina. It's impossible to say because some cable stretches more than others & it depends on your tension too. But if it stretches without tugging then I'd leave it as it is tbh.

This is a picture of the one I sent for Tunnocks blanket. It looks like a rectangle!

Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017
MadisonAvenue · 06/03/2017 17:48

I think I might send a parcel this week, in case they're making a head start on constructing.

Lindor Strawberry Chipping? Haven't tried those. Yet. I can vouch for the orange ones being very very nice though Grin

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 06/03/2017 18:55

Mmmmmmmm

Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017
MadisonAvenue · 06/03/2017 19:44

I may have to drop some hints, what with Mothers Day coming up...Wink

Spindelina · 06/03/2017 19:48

OK, Chipping, you've talked me down to one row of trc down each side; now sitting at 11". My cast off stretches to 12" with some effort, the rest stretches easily.

It's my first attempt wielding a cable needle, so it's by no means perfect! My tension got tighter as I got the hang of it, so it's not even really rectangular, but hey. And my first long tail cast on. Good for learning new skills, this is! Spike stitch next up.

Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017
MadisonAvenue · 06/03/2017 20:03

Really like that Spin!

bookbook · 06/03/2017 20:45

Chipping - - erm, politely no,! Grin though I prefer dark chocolate with crunch tbh , not keen at all on strawberry flavour
Spiral - it is not just me as a newbie crotcheter then . Every time I do a c2c , it always seems to pull itself in. I don't think I am pulling/stretching when I measure it, but maybe I do!
Spindelina - that is truly great for your first cabling . My tension always settles down after a few rows too, while I fiddle around with the cable needle

MadisonAvenue · 06/03/2017 20:57

book whenever my parents have a box of chocolates there's always a little sandwich bag containing strawberry creams for me when I next visit. They used to tell me that they were the best flavour in the box when I was little, and convinced me that I liked them which saved them the job of eating chocolates that they didnt like.

bookbook · 06/03/2017 21:57

Hahaha! Madison - isn't it true that if you eat/taste something 15 times, you get to like it? ( Never worked with DD2 on sprouts though Grin )
