Our lovely Zombie (who has said she doesn’t mind being outed as Candy) has long been a supporter of Woolly Hugs, bless her for it! Recently she made a very kind donation to us, and we would love to start an Ongoing project to honour this remarkable woman, who we have both had the privilege of meeting, dancing and drinking with. Wine Wine She is utterly fab-u-lous. :)

After a chat with Zombie we have made a plan which she loves. We would like to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care. They will be called Candy’s Hugs.

Zombie is a bright and beautiful woman so we have chosen a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give big hugs as she goes through treatments.

Will you join with us? If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, crack on! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our first posting date is to be January 28th. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch.

Thank you so much xx

Thanks

I struggle with the decreasing! Doesn't help that I am changing colour every 2 rows where she just keeps going. Might do a couple of squares to get the hang of it, then try changing again Grin

VittysCardigan · 11/01/2017 21:26

I'm not ready for colour changes yet Firefly!

bookbook · 11/01/2017 21:33

Pop - hope you mend quickly Flowers it shakes you up regardless.
Right have now finished 2 x yellow -and I have been good so far and sewn in the ends. Though they are all curly edged at the moment.
Green, here I come - I have a lovely rainbow stripe pattern waiting...

I have a stupid question. What happens on 28th Jan? Is that the date you have to receive the squares by, or the date when we can start sending them in?
Thank you Blush
I love looking at everyone's photos by the way.

VittysCardigan · 11/01/2017 21:39

They are fab Book - are the patterns on revelry?

VittysCardigan · 11/01/2017 21:46

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 11/01/2017 21:55

So it isn't GREAT...but I've finally cracked this ctc thing! As someone upthread said, it just clicked! I haven't felt this way since I first learned "moonlight sonata"- that just seemed to suddenly click too!

I have just been trawling and adapting tbh Vitty - the star and heart were simple patterns on the front of baby jumpers ,
the sun is cut down from a Macmillan pattern, HERE
butterfly is a Ravelry one , and two are just simple textures - one is a basket weave , the other a simple moss .
If you can read , here are the charts for the heart and star - for my knitting tension I use 31 stitches on this pattern , so its central , so I just add on 4 stitches at beginning and end of each row , and enough rows top and bottom to make it up to 6" - for me thats 2 rows at top and bottom

IAmNot - I think its the date for the squares to be with KnottyandPistey , but as it will be an ongoing thing , I think that 's just for the first tranche :). I know lots have already been posted - pictures are on the facebook site .
I am just trying to get as many done so I can get them sent off before I go on holiday, and then will carry on when I get back home :)

That's lovely Lem

flutterworc · 11/01/2017 22:55

Okay, am in love with c2c. Bella Coco is a goddess. I may have got a little cocky with changing colour, but pretty pleased with the outcome - even if it isn't exactly square...

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 11/01/2017 22:55

Pop. Are you ok? You're not having much luck!

Vitty you do look lovely & cosy!

All my supplies arrived in the post today and were waiting for me when I got home from work (how lovely is the bag that Wool Warehouse send the yarn in, I'm proper impressed!).
After finally putting DD to bed, I pulled out the turquoise yarn, took up my crochet hook, started the Bella Cocoa granny square tutorial ... and got stuck! I got abut 10 minutes in, by which point I just had what looked like a small ball of knots, and I had no idea which bit I was meant to be sticking the hook through.

So I thought I should go right back to basics, and found a tutorial on single crochet. Well, I couldn't get that right either - I'm not sure if I'm pulling the yarn too tightly, but I'm not seeing nice distinct chains and I'm struggling to push the hook through the chain and then pull the yarn back over.

I've given up for tonight as I'm too tired, but will try again tomorrow. All the squares look so pretty, I really want to be able to do this!

IamtheZombie · 11/01/2017 23:15

This is so lovely. Everyone sharing their entusiasm, expertise and just general support. You can feel the love behind every single post and see it in the stunning squares being posted. There simply are no words.

HemanOrSheRa · 11/01/2017 23:54

Don't give up on the granny square Drop! You can do it.

I can knit, very slowly, but I've never been able to crochet, despite being shown by an expert elderly lady who had the patience of a saint. I bought an idiots guide to crochet, nope, still couldn't do it.

I started watching the Bella Coco tutorial last night and had a go. I got the hang of the stitches ok (sort of Confused) but couldn't see how the shape was formed. I must have started again about 10 times. Anyway, tonight I still couldn't get. I was crocheting away but the shape was off. All of a sudden it clicked.

I watched each small section, paused, did my bit, watched again, paused etc. Went back and watched again if necessary. Good job she has a very soothing voice Smile!

Here's the start of my very first granny square! It's a bit rough and wonky but I can do it Grin! Keep trying Drop!
