Our lovely Zombie (who has said she doesn’t mind being outed as Candy) has long been a supporter of Woolly Hugs, bless her for it! Recently she made a very kind donation to us, and we would love to start an Ongoing project to honour this remarkable woman, who we have both had the privilege of meeting, dancing and drinking with. Wine Wine She is utterly fab-u-lous. :)

After a chat with Zombie we have made a plan which she loves. We would like to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care. They will be called Candy’s Hugs.

Zombie is a bright and beautiful woman so we have chosen a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give big hugs as she goes through treatments.

Will you join with us? If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, crack on! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our first posting date is to be January 28th. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch.

Thank you so much xx

Thanks

Grin Pop

I ordered needles which came yesterday as FidGirl also wants to make a square. Just waiting for the wool Knotty&Pistey have ordered as am in Forrin.

They also refused the shiny proper English pound notes I offered so many thanks to all the donors Flowers

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 12/01/2017 07:07

Fiderer rooting for you!

kelper · 12/01/2017 07:46

I made another square last night, but it seems to be a tiny bit bigger than my other one, is that a problem?

FireflyGirl · 12/01/2017 07:59

How are you getting on Drop?

If you're still struggling, could someone film you crocheting and post it on here? (Can we post videos?? If not, on YouTube and link us to it). Then we might be able to help you if we can see where you're going wrong.

I can't even offer to meet up with you to help as I have so much on for the next couple of weeks! Are you near whoever was offering upthread? (Can't remember who or where Blush #helpful#)

That square looks great, flutter. I'm going to have another go at C2C later... wish me luck!

Kelper - none of mine are the same size either. WH wizards just match them up and sort them out! Otherwise my squares would be returned labelled 'must try harder' Grin

Mummylin · 12/01/2017 08:58

I am hoping my wool will arrive today, I am chomping at the bit to get started.

Pengling · 12/01/2017 09:06

@DropZoneOne - this tutorial really helped me understand the basics of a crochet stitch when I was just starting www.lookatwhatimade.net/crafts/yarn/crochet/crochet-tutorials/crochet-corners-elusive-hidden-stitch/ it has great pictures and is really well explained.

Also, a lot of people recommend using a hook one size bigger to do your beginning chain and then switching down to the proper size for the rest of the pattern, as it makes it much easier! So if you have a 4.5 mm or 5 mm hook I'd start your first chain with that, then swap to the 4 mm.

Hope that helps!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 12/01/2017 09:12

POP. How are you feeling today?

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 12/01/2017 09:16

Chipping sore but ready to go! It might sound dumb but I think I'm lucky I'm so short- I think that, if the car had bumped my leg instead of my hip, it might have been more serious!

I'm having a go at tapestry crochet today!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 12/01/2017 09:29

POP. Yes, we are a little more padded on the hip & it's a bit more sturdy mines very errm sturdy I hope it doesn't cause you any long term problems.

I like tappestry crochet. I might have a go at that, but not this morning 😬

Susiesoap7 · 12/01/2017 10:08

Still waiting for my wool, but I've found a site called attic24 that shows you how to crochet granny squares it looks like an easy to follow one. She says haha 😂

NewtScamandersNaughtyNiffler · 12/01/2017 10:14

I've always meant to join the wooly hugs and make use of the fact I can crochet. And knit (just).

But I never do.

I will now. For Zombie. Because I've follower her story since forever ( under various names).

I will buy wool asap and get making

Morning Brew

Anyone snowed in yet?

MadisonAvenue · 12/01/2017 10:51

Morning all! It's day two of waiting for a parcel here. It was a no-show yesterday even though that was the estimated delivery. Not sure if it's coming in the Royal Mail van or if the postman will bring it.

Anyway, square 4 is done so I might as well get cracking on a fifth one while I'm waiting.

MadisonAvenue · 12/01/2017 10:52

No snow here yet K&P. We looked to be just on the edge of the big stuff when I saw the forecast this morning.

bookbook · 12/01/2017 10:56

no snow here either , and I am oop North! makes a change! ( maybe not as oop north as others mind you.... - need to go shopping this morning, but am browsing patterns instead Grin .
Hope to finish # 7 this afternoon, but am off emergency babysitting for a couple of hours after lunch

KnottyAndPistey · 12/01/2017 10:58

daciousme · 12/01/2017 11:18

That is amazing - well done K&P - and what a lot of lovely squares on here.

MadisonAvenue · 12/01/2017 11:20

Wow! That's amazing Grin

I'm multitasking here. Knitting, drinking coffee, peering out of the window every 2 minutes and shopping for a cross trainer online.

IamtheZombie · 12/01/2017 11:25

Fabulous and bloody amazing, KandP.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 12/01/2017 11:34

Just like you then Zombie 😊

User568945 · 12/01/2017 11:35

May just have to use the "about to snow" excuse to slope off early from work this PM, and get knitting some more ... Grin should hate to be stuck at work without my needles!

BaggyCheeks · 12/01/2017 12:01

We have a light dusting of snow here, but you'd think it was 6 feet deep considering how the DC have reacted to it! I got a good chance to get some hooking done while we watched a Thomas the tank film for the fifty millionth time Brew

MadisonAvenue · 12/01/2017 12:02

Postman has just been. No wool but a nice new bag which I've bought with mother in law's Christmas money.

It's a bit rainy here now.

Anyway, #4

MadisonAvenue · 12/01/2017 12:05

Oh, and #5 is going to be 12" so I may be a while...

bookbook · 12/01/2017 12:13

Nice one Madison -and a 12" square I have seen a couple of nice afghan square designs that I couldn't squeeze down to a 6" :)
