Our lovely Zombie (who has said she doesn’t mind being outed as Candy) has long been a supporter of Woolly Hugs, bless her for it! Recently she made a very kind donation to us, and we would love to start an Ongoing project to honour this remarkable woman, who we have both had the privilege of meeting, dancing and drinking with. Wine Wine She is utterly fab-u-lous. :)

After a chat with Zombie we have made a plan which she loves. We would like to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care. They will be called Candy’s Hugs.

Zombie is a bright and beautiful woman so we have chosen a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give big hugs as she goes through treatments.

Will you join with us? If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, crack on! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our first posting date is to be January 28th. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch.

Thank you so much xx

Thanks

Nope- the crocheting had stopped by then. Grin

VittysCardigan · 11/01/2017 09:15

Arrived at work to find all the IT systems down yay Wish I had my crochet with me Sad

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 11/01/2017 09:16

Piebald if it's made with Hugs, there's always a place for the less than perfect squares 😊 The hookers around here are amazing! 😳😉

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 11/01/2017 09:19

Loving that star pattern...may have to have a go.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 11/01/2017 09:21

POP. You can't leave us hanging like that...we need details.

11 yo has a hover board, I so want to try it out. But I so need my job, which I can't do with a broken wrist and at my age/weight/skill level, that's all too likely!

Vitty oh what a crying shame you don't have it with you. Still at least you have a working device & can chat here and add to your favourites list on Ravelry, still has to be better than doing actual work 😁

piebald · 11/01/2017 09:27

Thanks Chippingindoeswoollyhugs, there is love and a few sweary words involved!!

VittysCardigan · 11/01/2017 09:34

Yes Pop, I can see how wine & skateboard might go together but How on earth does the carrot factor in?

Damn, IT seems to be back on

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 11/01/2017 09:48

A bunch of random teens throwing carrots at my friend's window...I was pissed brave enough to chase them off. Unfortunately I stepped on a skateboard and skated a little way before I fell off- was able to dismount!

MadisonAvenue · 11/01/2017 10:14

Bloody hell Pop Grin

Well I have to wait for a parcel today, which may or not come, so what else is there to do but knit and drink coffee? I daren't use the vacuum in case I don't hear the door....

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 11/01/2017 10:16

Aaaargh!! I'm 20miles away from home and I've just realized my wool, may arrive!

MadisonAvenue · 11/01/2017 10:35

Nooooo! Will a neighbour take it in for you?

SpiralArchitect · 11/01/2017 10:58

Lem This is the pattern I used:
www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/marigold-15 with a few extra rounds added (because it was made in DK rather than aran...)

It's pretty straightforward and has a fab photo tutorial as well to show all the stitch placements if you get stuck.

kelper · 11/01/2017 12:09

Heres my first offering :)

Zombie and Woolly Hugs. Come and find out about Candy's Hugs, we need your help.
MadisonAvenue · 11/01/2017 12:20

That is beautiful kelper

I really just teach myself to crochet. I'm so envious of you hookers.

MadisonAvenue · 11/01/2017 12:20

*must, not just

FiveGoMadInDorset · 11/01/2017 13:05

Madison I watched the Bella Coco you tube tutorial for a granny square, ishe made it look actually quite easy with clear instructions

MadisonAvenue · 11/01/2017 13:19

Thanks Five I'll have a look at that!
I had to pop into WHSmiths this morning to use the post office, I was early so leafed through a few crochet books while I was waiting for the PO counter to open but there wasn't really anything for beginners.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 11/01/2017 13:22

Piebald it'll be perfect then, Hugs & a bit of swearing!

Vitty. That's a shame, still must be time for lunch! Any wool shops near by?...

Pop. I hope you haven't hurt more than your pride? Teens throwing carrots? Random. Little sods.

Kelper. That's lovely! I might have to give crochet another go, but I love the comfort of knitting.

Lucienandjean · 11/01/2017 13:24

KnottyandPistey as you are apparently like Ant and Dec, do you always have to stand the right way round? Knotty on the left and Pistey on the right?

Just idly wondering. Now eagerly awaiting wool and trying to decide which pattern to start with.

Does anyone know where to find good knitting patterns for 6" squares, preferably free? I want to try out some new patterns or stitches. I'm reasonably competent but only following patterns, not going freestyle!

MadisonAvenue · 11/01/2017 13:32

Here's another I've finished

startingtheengine · 11/01/2017 13:42

All of these are very impressive and I'm a little Envy about your skills!

I've reserved the book at the library that MrsH suggested and watched some of the tutorials on Youtube so I am going to attempt to teach myself to crotchet! What size hook would be best for me to get?

MrsHathaway · 11/01/2017 13:46

I like this twelve-inch pattern (free download on Ravelry).

CaptainBraandPants · 11/01/2017 13:49

More beautiful squares.
I'm sitting here at work wondering if DH managed to pick up my yarn this morning.I have texted him to ask after sitting on my hands for half an hour trying to resist texting but he hasn't replied yet.
Pop go easy on the skateboarding, I think it's pretty difficult to crochet with a broken hand. Grin
starting 4mm hook is advised. Good hooking

CaptainBraandPants · 11/01/2017 13:50

That's lovely MrsH

bookbook · 11/01/2017 13:52

Lucien - Ravelry have a lot of free knitting patterns. They sometimes need adjusting for the right size, but have found them useful
[[http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/search#query=dishcloth&view=captioned_thumbs&page=1&sort=best&craft=knitting&weight=dk&availability=free
look here]]
I have also used pinterest, when looking for something specific, and stumbled across this too - only a couple , but gives you ideas.- go to 6" patterns
here
I google a lot too dishcloth patterns are handy :)
