Our lovely Zombie (who has said she doesn’t mind being outed as Candy) has long been a supporter of Woolly Hugs, bless her for it! Recently she made a very kind donation to us, and we would love to start an Ongoing project to honour this remarkable woman, who we have both had the privilege of meeting, dancing and drinking with. Wine Wine She is utterly fab-u-lous. :)

After a chat with Zombie we have made a plan which she loves. We would like to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care. They will be called Candy’s Hugs.

Zombie is a bright and beautiful woman so we have chosen a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give big hugs as she goes through treatments.

Will you join with us? If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, crack on! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our first posting date is to be January 28th. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch.

Thank you so much xx

Thanks

I have a memory of my mother in hospital with cancer, knitting baby clothes for one of the hospital porter's baby. So I like the idea that now I'll be contributing towards a woolly hug for someone in her position. I know she'd have appreciated it had she been presented with one. (At the time I was not a knitter, took years for me to start).

I just made that attic24 grannie square! its curling in quite a bit though, is that a problem?

flutterworc · 10/01/2017 21:37

Right. First proper square. A bit boring, possibly, and maybe a little wobbly (is that allowed in place of its illegal synonym?) but done. Is it okay?

That's beautiful Baggy

bookbook · 10/01/2017 22:07

I love that lace pattern Baggy
I have got home, and managed half way up a yellow star , but if I carry on, I can bet my bottom dollar I will go wrong - 10 o clock is my cut off hour!
and you crotcheters are running away from me! :)

TheoriginalLEM · 10/01/2017 22:15

flitter i love those colours!! a proper riot!!!

CaptainBraandPants · 10/01/2017 22:31

So, they tried to deliver my yarn today and nobody was in. Argh!
It's at the depot now and needs to be collected. There's no way I can collect until Friday and even then I might not make it. So, my lovely DH is going to collect it on the way to work tomorrow. Smile
This time tomorrow, I'll be elbow deep in yarn. My main problem is going to be choosing which colour(s) to use first as they all look so fab.

SaladDressing · 10/01/2017 22:32

Haven't crocheted for more than 30yrs but here goes...

How do you serious crocheters get anything done? It's rather addictive, I think I may need to give up work! Smile

AliceInUnderpants · 10/01/2017 23:16

@Baggycheeks that's gorgeous - do you have a pattern please?

I have been working on this one www.beatriceryandesigns.com/2015/06/18/grannys-shining-star-square/
Have just done round 11 (the magenta in the picture), and due to using a smaller hook than the pattern calls for, it's now just coming in at 6inches.
Should I end it here and hope joining it to another square pulls it into a slightly better shape, or continue and just add a few extra rounds at the end to bring it up to 12"?

Hold on, I'll pop onto my phone and post a progress pic.

flutterworc · 10/01/2017 23:16

#2 done. Now off to lie down in a darkened room with a damp cloth on my head!

BaggyCheeks · 11/01/2017 00:51

@AliceInUnderpants it's a free one I found on Ravelry www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/victorian-lattice-square. I had to leave our round 9 to keep it to 6 inches Smile

I think your star looks like it could be pulled into shape by other squares in its blanket, or you could keep going to 12 inches. It's so cheerful either way!

Morning all, I am trundling through my knitting, managed a stocking stitch one but when I went to do something slightly different it all went wrong so staying safe and gone back to garter stitch, going to have a go at crochet over the weekend, which could go horribly wring

VittysCardigan · 11/01/2017 08:14

Morning All. Started knitting a square last night but made a hash if it so frogged it & started again. Second attempt also wrong & wrong size to boot. Will be going back to crochet this eve!

piebald · 11/01/2017 08:45

I want to crochet but the only way i will get anything finished is to do plain or stripey knitted squares, they did say they will use anything. Everyone elses look very fancy, i hope there is room for not terribly neat almost squares

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 11/01/2017 08:47

So bright!

There was an incident last night involving too much wine, carrots and a skateboard...so I'll be crocheting with sunglasses on today!

Morning btw

bookbook · 11/01/2017 09:09

erm Pop - was that while you were doing crotchet? Grin
