Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2016!! So glad to have you on board! Thanks

For the last two years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers visiting the Leeds area for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project. Photos from previous projects are here...

Each year these marvellous folk bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are at 75%; the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home.

This year the group in Leeds (organised by an amazing MNer) are again bringing older children/teens over who have had cancer and are now in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

But we always want to do more, and through fellow Mumsnetters we have been in contact with two further groups. These are based in Billericay and Portsmouth, and support slightly younger children, and run by the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. In essence they do the same wonderful work in bringing children over for respite from the shocking conditions.

How perfect it would be to make them each a Little Hug.
So that’s 36 blankets! Grin Star Star Wine

With your help we know we can do this

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta and jaffa. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make in a non-specific colour theme, for a boy or girl.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • If you are thinking about making a whole blanket, please contact us first, thank you x
  • We are aiming for blankets which will be 48 inches by 60 inches.
  • We have started earlier than previously, as the first group (Portsmouth) arrive in May.

Last posting of squares is Monday 11th April.
No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that week. Thank you.

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Our paypal is [email protected] . Cheques and cash are very welcome too, just PM for the address. We are grateful for every single penny.

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

I have sent a square, but it somehow came out too big - hope it can still be used, if not for this, for something else.

inlectorecumbit · 09/04/2016 19:36

could you PM me an address to send my square.
I am so sorry l only managed 1- l was full of good intentions but l had breast surgery and my stitches burst so had to hang up my needles for a while. However l will keep going with the wool l have for the next time if that's okay?

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 09/04/2016 21:46

Inlecto
Well done for making one with surgery!
As the saying goes...
If lots of people do a small thing to help, it soon adds up to a lot of help.

KnottyAndPistey · 10/04/2016 07:17

Thank you everyone Thanks

and morning Brew

and ow to burst stitches, how are you now Inlecto ?

Please do keep going with the wool, we love 12&6 inch squares in SSDK all year round for Billie's Blankets and Little Hugs, and also this time next year we will be back making Chernobyl children blankets.

Your square will be treasured, thank you.

Blue honestly there is always quite a variation on size, it ill be fine, thank you. Thanks

Aarrgh - I didn't realise the timing was quite so tight. I was going to send a largish parcel by My Hermes tomorrow, but I think I'll have to send the squares first class instead and send the rest later...

Just as well I haven't sealed anything up yet!

KnottyAndPistey · 10/04/2016 13:30

How long to MyH say they take?

OP posts:
KnottyAndPistey · 10/04/2016 13:31

Just looked, says up to 5 days Sad

MrsKCastle · 10/04/2016 13:33

I posted a parcel 2nd class yesterday. Fingers crossed that it arrives in time....

Mhw02 · 10/04/2016 13:52

I have a completed blanket, some squares and some extras to post tomorrow. Second completed blanket will be posted Tuesday or Wednesday (approx. 680 ends down, approx. 280 left to go!)

inlectorecumbit · 10/04/2016 16:36

So l managed to get a wee sneaky 6inch extra square done thanks to DH for his endless patience detangling wool and making endless cups of coffee. I promise to do better next time,
The wound is healing slowly, and l am feeling a bit better thanks for asking Smile - DH will post tomorrow ( bless him he is such a Star )

PurpleFrog · 10/04/2016 17:56

It's OK. My Chernobyl squares and squares for the two other hugs on the go at the moment are packaged up ready to take to the post office tomorrow morning. It will give me time to collect together some more "extras" and maybe sew up the other pair of Angel teds that didn't make my last parcel!

Marcipex · 10/04/2016 20:48

I can do a bit more if you're short ? Please do say when you know.

PurpleFrog · 10/04/2016 21:43

I am also happy to do a few more if necessary. I have decided I like doing 12 inch squares - they grow quite quickly and the sides are big enough that it is easier to watch TV etc., but not too big that you get bored ! Grin
