Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2016!! So glad to have you on board! Thanks

For the last two years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers visiting the Leeds area for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project. Photos from previous projects are here...

Each year these marvellous folk bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are at 75%; the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home.

This year the group in Leeds (organised by an amazing MNer) are again bringing older children/teens over who have had cancer and are now in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

But we always want to do more, and through fellow Mumsnetters we have been in contact with two further groups. These are based in Billericay and Portsmouth, and support slightly younger children, and run by the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. In essence they do the same wonderful work in bringing children over for respite from the shocking conditions.

How perfect it would be to make them each a Little Hug.
So that’s 36 blankets! Grin Star Star Wine

With your help we know we can do this

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta and jaffa. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make in a non-specific colour theme, for a boy or girl.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • If you are thinking about making a whole blanket, please contact us first, thank you x
  • We are aiming for blankets which will be 48 inches by 60 inches.
  • We have started earlier than previously, as the first group (Portsmouth) arrive in May.

Last posting of squares is Monday 11th April.
No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that week. Thank you.

Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Our paypal is [email protected] . Cheques and cash are very welcome too, just PM for the address. We are grateful for every single penny.

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

I can also do a few more if necessary. I have decided that I quite like doing 12 inch squares. They grow quite quickly, the sides are big enough to watch TV easily, but they are not too big that you get bored! Grin

PurpleFrog · 10/04/2016 21:47

Bah! Not quite sure what happened. Thought I had lost the first one and it hadn't posted.

steppemum · 10/04/2016 23:44

Hi, 3 squares finished, just spent all evening sewing in ends.

But I don't have an address!
please pm me
thanks

Is it ok to send extras later? Just thinking the squares would go into an envelope, and go off first class, but if I stick extras in, it will be a bigger parcel, and need 2nd class/parcel post

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 11/04/2016 11:52

ÃŽ was going to ask about making more. Sometimes it's good to be doing things that don't need a pattern, while dd is alseep in the car after lunch.

What's the best thing to do? Make a few and send them with a little note saying what they are made of?

Or keep them until next year and try not to loose them...?

At the moment, we have no idea how many squares we will receive by Thursday, had a mountain of parcels today and expect so tomorrow, but we still don't know.

If anyone would like to make more and can get them to us by this Thursday, we'd love to have them, but no pressure.

As last year, if we are in the blessed position of having too many, once everyone is represented fairly, we will make Billie's Blankets with the extra. But this is obviously up in the air!

Any extras and ice cream funds - could we say last posting May 14th please. No immediate rush on those. Thank you

Steppe You have mail Thanks

WhyCant We welcome 12 inch squares in SSDK all year round as we make joint Billie's Blankets with them, love to receive, thank you. xxxx

yes I still have yarn left. I have 3 colours, would you like plain coloured squares (with maybe a texture pattern) so you can mix and match them in other blankets, or mix coloured squares, and are 6'' or 12'' more useful for adding to other blankets?

steppemum · 11/04/2016 12:47

parcel ready, address received, will post on way to school run.

KnottyAndPistey · 11/04/2016 13:06

Very useful, yes please, and however you'd like to make, we'd love to receive, thank you. xxxx

You will need a second ice cream jar soon! Fantastic!

I will make more, as and when I get a few minutes.

I have also managed to eeke out one more merino one, from the last of the blues I had. Will post all the blues for mamateetee next week, when I have some money for posting. I might manage a 12 inch to put in with them by then.

Finally finished my blanket. Only took me nine months. Off to the Post Office now!

As I said, it's probably too big, so feel free to use it for a different project if it's more appropriate elsewhere.

KnottyAndPistey · 12/04/2016 17:54

9 months! Bless your heart, hope you make these beautiful things for yourself too?

Thank you Thanks xxxxx
