There will need to be a quick turnaround on this but we know hope we can do it!

We have been approached and asked if we can make Little Hugs for a group of teenagers coming over to Leeds for a recuperative holiday in the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project.

Each year these marvellous folk bring children over from Belarus who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor. It is in the summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, that it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are at 75%, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home.

This year the group in Leeds (organised by an amazing Mumsnetter) are bringing twelve children who have had cancer and are now in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. This summer there are four boys and eight girls coming, aged between 11 and 14. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little. How perfect it would be to make them each a Little Hug.

Here's how to help with this project.....

  • We would like 12” squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours, but please AVOID bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, fiesta and jaffa. This will help squares fit together more easily. Make for a boy, girl or in a non specific colour theme. We will be happy to accept 6” squares if making a 12” one feels too much.

  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.

  • We can supply all yarn for this. Let us know if we can send to you.

  • Our last posting is Saturday 14th June, so we have a fighting chance of getting the blankets ready to go to the children on their arrival in the UK.

  • If anyone would like to donated funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Our paypal is [email protected], cheques and cash are very welcome too, just PM for the address to send.

ThanksThanksThanksThanks

We know together we can do this in time! On behalf of these children, a huge THANK YOU.

Pistey and Knotty X

Thanks

In fact, is anyone intimate with any highup anywhere that might like to sponsor a day out/apples/juice/ice creams etc?

TheWoollybacksWife · 15/07/2014 19:06

Can't help with any intimate sponsors ilove but have you tried somewhere like Morrison's? It would surely be great publicity for them to donate fruit or ice lollies and their head office is local-ish (Well, more local than Tesco et al)

AnyaKnowIt · 15/07/2014 19:14

Write to all the big supermarkets.

Can you also get hold of the local newspaper and put out an appeal?

AnyaKnowIt · 15/07/2014 19:21

I know that tesco and ASDS have a community staff member, might be an idea to pop in your local one and ask to speak to them.

ilove · 15/07/2014 19:38

Written to and rung all the supermarkets and costco and makro, all said no other than Asda who have said maybe and they will get someone to ring me.Done local radio appeals, Yorkshire Post appeals, and will have a press photographer at some stuff who owes us a favour.

Trouble is - and I have had this said to my face - is that "it isn't local kids" and "why should we care about them" and 2that was 28 years ago its over now" and the worst was the man who accused me of doing this for my own reward so I don't have to pay for days out with my kids in the summer.

Sigh.

We have raised the £7500 for the flights and visas thanks to the amazing folk at the Round Table who sent us the last 1500 we needed, and (bizarrely) William Hill the bookies who have matched the cash raised by one of their staff. Just 4 weeks of activities to fund/provide/facilitate!

TheWoollybacksWife · 15/07/2014 19:44

Oh bugger ilove that's grim. Whatever happened to human compassion? Sad

How much money are we talking?

ilove · 15/07/2014 19:57

Depends what it is. An ice cream for all the kids is £50, food for the 2 night 3 day residential is (or was last year) £500, entry to the local theme park a minimum of 12.50 a head x 35, a coach to go further afield £440, and on it goes. fish and chips at the seaside around £300.

you see, the way it works is that while you are hosting the children, any trips we do in that fortnight you and your children are included in. We don't expect you to turn up at the fish and chip shop and stand outside while we feed the Belarussian children, or pay for yourselves. The families take annual leave, give up their homes, double their food bills and more than double their diesel/petrol for the two weeks, and we are one group. EVERYONE is equal.

I'm on call 24/7 as is the interpreter and dovctor, and I cover around 3000 miles in the 4 weeks. It is bloody hard work, but it gets under your skin and once you start...well, you just don't stop. Breaks my heart every year when they have to leave.

Dutchoma · 15/07/2014 20:47

How's your foot ilove?

ilove · 15/07/2014 21:13

Thankyou for asking, it's a nightmare. I am waiting for more test results and need referring to someone else as the consultant has no idea what's the matter :(

Dutchoma · 15/07/2014 21:16

Oh what a shame. I hope it will behave itself enough for you to carry on with all your plans

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 15/07/2014 21:23

The other side of the coin to 'they're not local' is that this isn't the only group in the UK doing this...Just asked DH about the company he works for, and as it is international it couldn't be from them...Even the British charity branch of it would probably only consider sponsoring the charity as a whole, so then the money is very much more spread out...

AnyaKnowIt · 15/07/2014 21:24

Oh that is rubbish Sad

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 15/07/2014 21:26

Local churches/secondary schools/private schools/leisure centres/sports clubs/holiday or touristy places?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 15/07/2014 23:13

Aving a thinky here. X

Really sorry your foot is not as it should be. You really don't need that. Hugs.

Can't bear the It's not our kids line, really find that lack of compassion and humanity hard to understand. Horrible.

So glad they will all have a beautiful Woolly Hug though. Collected the last two from Knots today. They are stunning. Will photograph them tomorrow, then organise a 'team' photo of them all too.

KnottyLocks · 15/07/2014 23:14

There is one more blanket to photograph, and then a group picture to take too, just need it to be dry enough for long enough in the next few days.
