There will need to be a quick turnaround on this but we know hope we can do it!

We have been approached and asked if we can make Little Hugs for a group of teenagers coming over to Leeds for a recuperative holiday in the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project.

Each year these marvellous folk bring children over from Belarus who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor. It is in the summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, that it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are at 75%, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home.

This year the group in Leeds (organised by an amazing Mumsnetter) are bringing twelve children who have had cancer and are now in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. This summer there are four boys and eight girls coming, aged between 11 and 14. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little. How perfect it would be to make them each a Little Hug.

Here's how to help with this project.....

  • We would like 12” squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours, but please AVOID bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, fiesta and jaffa. This will help squares fit together more easily. Make for a boy, girl or in a non specific colour theme. We will be happy to accept 6” squares if making a 12” one feels too much.

  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.

  • We can supply all yarn for this. Let us know if we can send to you.

  • Our last posting is Saturday 14th June, so we have a fighting chance of getting the blankets ready to go to the children on their arrival in the UK.

  • If anyone would like to donated funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Our paypal is [email protected], cheques and cash are very welcome too, just PM for the address to send.

ThanksThanksThanksThanks

We know together we can do this in time! On behalf of these children, a huge THANK YOU.

Pistey and Knotty X

Thanks

Ty. Coffee much appreciated!

Will get them sent today. Walk to town might keep me awake. Thank you!

Am going to keep the style craft and do some billies/babettes/littles for you if that's ok? I can return it if you'd rather?

I've got to town and I don't know the address! Oh my LORD I am a disaster today. I was an hour late picking DS1 up from nursery. A whole hour - the shame - just because I thought it was 3pm and it was 4pm. If I don't get some sleep tonight I'm going to crack up. Sad

Please can someone pm me the address? I've got to supermarket shop now so I'll go back to the postie after.

I've got photos. So I'll get them on here if you like so you can see what I'm sending if you need to plan?

So sorry again. I'm a teacher when not on mat leave - feel free to give me detention for late homework :(

RatherBeOnThePiste · 17/06/2014 16:48

RatherBeOnThePiste · 17/06/2014 16:49

You have mail, I nearly posted it on here Grin

If you've missed the post today, don't fret, send tomorrow!

Morning :) Brew

Looking forward SO MUCH to coming and meeting you ilove and all the children, will be absolutely magic, but will wear big sunglasses so that no one can see if I have teary eyes!

My DD is also coming, we're going up on the train as tis a long old way, but we can't wait.

There are collections of squares now with the very lovely Soupy, fan and Knotty I find the pics, although didn't take a pic of the ones with Knots, was in such a rush for the post office, sorry.

I find the pics I do have!

And because folk have been so generous there will be at least three Billie's Blankets to come from this too. So all just marvellous, lovely Ninja will be here very soon to collect a Billie's blanket to hook together. Tis another beauty!

Thanks

Posty not here yet and have a red card of doom from Saturday, so if anyone was expecting to hear of arrivals, I shall need to get to the sorting office.

The final sort for the Children of Chernobyl blankets is done, thanks so much to everyone. The response has been utterly amazing. Thank you. Thanks

We have done our best to ensure everyone has at least one square on. Because folk have been so generous we will be able to make at least three good sized Billie's Blankets from the collection too, which is just marvellous.
Thank you.

Enjoy your woolly adventure to the glorious North, Pistey! Glad you have you will have someone to share the carrying. Beauties of burden (not beasts). Grin
Thanks for agreeing to this Pistey, it has been fun for so many of ys, but I can imagine potentially fraying your end!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 24/06/2014 08:48

Has certainly had its Confused moments, but I'll avoid using 'fraying' as it's not a good look with woolly wool!

Last week, Knots and I double if not triple quadruple checked we were going to end up with the right number of blankets. We had a long phone call...

Boy number one?

Tick - Oma's

Boy number two?

Tick...

All the way through, then we'd get to the end and have to just go through it again..

Boy number onnnnnnnnnnnnnne?

Yessssssssssssss, tick, Oma's

We have a spreadsheet so it's all good. Hopefully Wine

I can guess who the wine is for: PISTEY Wine Wine Wine Hip,hip hooray

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 24/06/2014 09:22

I'll be good and I will take a mug of coffee and leave the Wine for someone else later! Grin

Flowers Flowers Flowers Flowers

for you too, Pistey.

You definitely have a knack for teamwork, and make it look so seamless and industrious and such wonderful, joyful fun, wrapped in woolly love. I really don't know how you do it sometimes. I think I'd have developed a twitch, and be in need of a lot more professional help and strong Wine. Not everyone can do what you and knotty do, tis a rare talent. Grin

I'm sure people must have been saying this for years. Great that Woolly Hugs have been recognised with grants, donations and recognition with awards too. There are some things which are right with this world and woolly hugs draws together a determined number of us to help tip the balance in their favour...with yarn! It makes me Grin

Allalonenow · 24/06/2014 09:27

Wonderful work Pistey and Knotty and everyone. Thanks
I'm loving the sneaky glass of wine in the pile of mugs of tea. Smile

BelleOfTheBoys Your interwoven leaf square is so lovely, I'm thinking it would make a pretty center panel for an Angel Hug. Would you mind sharing the pattern? Can tell from your post upthread how busy you are, so no probs if you don't have time. Thanks
