There will need to be a quick turnaround on this but we know hope we can do it!

We have been approached and asked if we can make Little Hugs for a group of teenagers coming over to Leeds for a recuperative holiday in the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project.

Each year these marvellous folk bring children over from Belarus who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor. It is in the summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, that it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are at 75%, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home.

This year the group in Leeds (organised by an amazing Mumsnetter) are bringing twelve children who have had cancer and are now in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. This summer there are four boys and eight girls coming, aged between 11 and 14. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little. How perfect it would be to make them each a Little Hug.

Here's how to help with this project.....

  • We would like 12” squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours, but please AVOID bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, fiesta and jaffa. This will help squares fit together more easily. Make for a boy, girl or in a non specific colour theme. We will be happy to accept 6” squares if making a 12” one feels too much.

  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.

  • We can supply all yarn for this. Let us know if we can send to you.

  • Our last posting is Saturday 14th June, so we have a fighting chance of getting the blankets ready to go to the children on their arrival in the UK.

  • If anyone would like to donated funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Our paypal is [email protected], cheques and cash are very welcome too, just PM for the address to send.

ThanksThanksThanksThanks

We know together we can do this in time! On behalf of these children, a huge THANK YOU.

Pistey and Knotty X

Thanks

Yes, it would be great to know how they get on. Especially in winter, when it's so cold there.

Dutchoma · 10/06/2014 09:25

It's in the bag with a card.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 10/06/2014 09:28

Looking forward to Saturday :)

Dutchoma · 10/06/2014 10:19

Oh good.

Mhw02 · 10/06/2014 18:12

Oma, that log-cabin design is stunning!

Mine is finished too! (Rest assured the battered, 27 year old care-bear does not come with the blanket...). Hopefully will send it tomorrow if I remember it when I leave the house at 7.30am tomorrow morning.

Also finished a few extra panels.

Pistey, If you still need people to hook together, I'm almost completely free for the next two weeks and would be more than happy to make one up.

Ooooooooooooooo, lovely!

To the blanket and offer Grin

We're waiting to see what other panels we have ...but will certainly be grabbing that offer if needed. Thank you Thanks

Tarlia · 10/06/2014 19:54

Oma and Mhw they are gorgeous. ilove would be so lovely to hear how they get on. Even nicer if a group blanket photo was allowed, though I know probably not, perhaps on their website?

BasketzatDawn · 10/06/2014 21:56

I'm roughly 2 inches up my first 12" square (knitted). In claret. If I don't get it finished before Saturday - highly likely as progress is SLOW - then will there be a use for a 12 " square in future WH projects, or are they all usually 6"? I do so want to contribute but just don't seem to have the time and the focus, yet it is a simple design. Is the colour okay for this too?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 11/06/2014 10:23

For Basketz

Thank you so much Mhw - that blanket is STUNNING, and we will remember your kind offer, as Knots says we are now waiting to see what we get in with the deadline before sharing any more out.

Basketz If you don't make this deadline, do send, were will make sure it goes into a Billie's Blanket at some point.Colour is lovely Thanks

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 11/06/2014 10:44

Mhw that is so gorgeous! It is so great that these kids will be taking home something so lovely. :)

AnyaKnowIt · 11/06/2014 13:12

I'm ready to send, can someone please pm me the address

JulesJules · 11/06/2014 13:44

Have sent my two squares off. [sheep]

ilove · 11/06/2014 22:09

Sitting here in a bit of a heap toight, got an ultrasouns in the morning after an MRI found a growth whrn looking for a fracture. Bottle of wine down and DH hhas actually made me giggle tongiht

Dutchoma · 11/06/2014 22:14

That's really pants ilove. Sending another bottle of virtual wine and prayers that it is not as bad as it sounds.

Opheliabumps · 11/06/2014 22:45

Oh ilove that is crap, sorry. Sending virtual hugs to you.

Like basketz I'm wondering if we can use 12" squares again, I found them much quicker than 4 x 6" squares for some reason. Could we use them for Billie's, I'd be happy to accept squares and hook them together -I'm really enjoying doing this Chernobyl one, it's a real challenge to wiggle the squares together!

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 11/06/2014 23:31

Sorry to read the bad news ilove Flowers

BelleOfTheBoys · 11/06/2014 23:37

Found you!

Stupid iphone app. I can never seem to find my threads. I've done two squares, just finishing up a third tomorrow night. Will get them in the post first thing Friday or Saturday. Promise :) I've done green leaves, green/purple/cream garter stripes, and a purple and cream zigzag slipstich (knitted).

I'll have a fair bit of yarn left. What can I do with it please? I don't know anything about babbettes or billies? What are those pls?

PastaandCheese · 12/06/2014 08:23

Hope it goes ok this morning ilove

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 12/06/2014 09:21

Belle Have a look for the link to the Woolly Hugs website for more about Babettes (panels of different sections put together to make larger squares, sent to Woolly Hugs for them to compile) and Billys (lovely larger blankets made for older children, so bigger than the angel hugs. Named after the beauruful Billy, daughter of a great MNer, who sadly died of cancer as a teenager.)

Your squares sound lovely, will look out for photos on the Woolly Hugs facebook pages when they arrive.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 12/06/2014 10:53

Huge hugs from me ilove - thinking of you here too xx
