There will need to be a quick turnaround on this but we know hope we can do it!

We have been approached and asked if we can make Little Hugs for a group of teenagers coming over to Leeds for a recuperative holiday in the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project.

Each year these marvellous folk bring children over from Belarus who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor. It is in the summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, that it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are at 75%, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home.

This year the group in Leeds (organised by an amazing Mumsnetter) are bringing twelve children who have had cancer and are now in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. This summer there are four boys and eight girls coming, aged between 11 and 14. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little. How perfect it would be to make them each a Little Hug.

Here's how to help with this project.....

  • We would like 12” squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours, but please AVOID bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, fiesta and jaffa. This will help squares fit together more easily. Make for a boy, girl or in a non specific colour theme. We will be happy to accept 6” squares if making a 12” one feels too much.

  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.

  • We can supply all yarn for this. Let us know if we can send to you.

  • Our last posting is Saturday 14th June, so we have a fighting chance of getting the blankets ready to go to the children on their arrival in the UK.

  • If anyone would like to donated funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Our paypal is [email protected], cheques and cash are very welcome too, just PM for the address to send.

ThanksThanksThanksThanks

We know together we can do this in time! On behalf of these children, a huge THANK YOU.

Pistey and Knotty X

Thanks

Stained glass sounds lovely woolybacks

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 25/05/2014 14:14

You could do the stained glass effect, but edged in a different colour. Youl could do a mix of squares, some ripple, some granny rainbow, some solid brigts. You can do flowers in the snow using that pattern but use a different background colour; blue or pale pink or greens.

KnottyLocks · 25/05/2014 14:27

Flowers in the snow would look lovely on parchment.

Woolly, pmed you before I spotted this. Violet looks lovely with pastels

TheWoollybacksWife · 25/05/2014 14:39

Thanks for the PM Kotty

I'm going into my local yarn shop on Tuesday and dither in person Grin. The shop has a fairly decent range of colours too and I always feel bad ordering online. Truth be told I'll probably go for the option that gives me the least amount of pesky ends to sew up

PastaandCheese · 25/05/2014 15:18

Aaah no. I'm in Cheshire.

Woollyback I haven't sewn any of my ends in yet. I think I shall self style myself a 'crochet slattern' badge and wear it with pride.

Titsalinabumsquash · 25/05/2014 15:23

I've done one 12 inch and four 6 inches for this project. I'll pop them in the post Tuesday along with Cathpip's four squares.

Thanks

Happy bank holidays to everyone Smile

PurpleFrog · 25/05/2014 18:05

I had forgotten it was a bank holiday tomorrow - I was going to post my 4 squares. Does anyone know if Scottish Post Offices are closed tomorrow as well? Even though it isn't a "proper" holiday here?

StandsOnGoldenSands · 25/05/2014 19:16

I have nearly done one stripey square. I feel like a massive slowcoach. Quite tempted to do another though ... Just need to think up a different design.

Mhw02 · 25/05/2014 19:42

Purple, there definitely aren't any deliveries tomorrow because the woman in the Post Office told me so on Friday (did you know the Royal Mail charge an extra £4 for Special Delivery items to be delivered on a Saturday?!), but I don't know if the Post Offices are shut - sometimes they're open on holidays but just don't send things out?

By the way, that circle to square panel is beautiful!

PurpleFrog · 25/05/2014 23:04

Thanks Mhw02 - I'm glad you like that square. I am just hoping it won't be too holey to be included. It is a bit more "open" than a normal granny.

I can't decide whether to go to the Post Office at lunchtime tomorrow or not. I was there late on Friday afternoon posting an eBay parcel and don't remember seeing any notices about Monday closure. I know there are no Royal Mail collections or deliveries tomorrow...

Tarlia · 26/05/2014 12:19

They are gorgeous, purplefrog, really lovely.

PurpleFrog · 26/05/2014 14:37

Thanks Tarlia Blush

My squares have now been posted - the Post Office was open - but they won't begin their journey properly until tomorrow morning!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 27/05/2014 09:11

Morning Brew

Just catching up :)

Thanks
pantshavenames · 27/05/2014 12:48

I'll be taking my two to the post office tomorrow hopefully. If I get anymore done before the deadline I'll post them on but tbh I've got 20 squares to do on my teach yourself crochet throw which I am frantic to get done now as I'm slightly losing the will to live with it...

PastaandCheese · 27/05/2014 13:38

Afternoon Brew

I am all pleased with myself as I had the foresight to buy enough stamps when I was in PO on Saturday so can just drop my squares in the box.

Usual address?

TheWoollybacksWife · 27/05/2014 14:35

I am having problems with my PMs. My iPad won't let me access them and my phone will let me read but now won't bring up the reply button. I sent one earlier today and I think I must have used up my quota. Nightmare Sad

So Oma I have an errand to run over your way anyway so will check bus times and we can hopefully get together on Monday (2nd June)

I have made a decision. Shock

Rainbow ripple in lipstick, spice, saffron, meadow, cloud blue, wisteria and emperor. After much dithering in the yarn shop

Pasta it won't be much use to you for this project but I visit the NW quite often (exiled scouser). If you ever want to meet up in John Lewis in Liverpool we can stroke the pretty yarn and go and have tea and cake.

I could make a double sided badge crochet slattern/cake whore Grin

You wouldn't believe I'm really shy - honest. MN has made me bold

PastaandCheese · 27/05/2014 14:39

Could I have free cake whore on mine please? I like to use my quota of free John Lewis cake when I visit Liverpool.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 27/05/2014 15:25

I'd quite like cake :)

PastaandCheese · 27/05/2014 15:55

Only quite like cake Pistey? Surely it is the food of the gods?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 27/05/2014 16:17

:)

RatherBeOnThePiste · 27/05/2014 16:22

Glad the package arrived safely!!! Grin

I accidentally purchased an Attic24 pack, so am now chomping at the bit to use some of the wooly gorgeousness that was delivered today!!!

Useless fact - I can see Deramores from my bedroom window Shock I had no idea it was so close. Probably a good thing that they don't have a shop Wink

Tarlia · 27/05/2014 18:37

Glad they arrived safely. Must be so lovely to receive so much colourful woolly goodness!

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 27/05/2014 19:39

Have you got enough yet, or do you want more, Pistwy?

I've just finished another bobble stripy 12" (so I have 7 more to post to you). Not sure whether to stop there or do more.

Dutchoma · 27/05/2014 21:16

Three quarters finished, all joined together.
