Very sad news I'm afraid. Lemontruffles' husband died this week on New Year's Day after living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Such devastating news. Our hearts go out to her. In her own words, he was the love of her life.
Sad

We have offered to make a blanket for her, and are so pleased that she has said she would love one. She is clearly so very moved by our offer and has said she is astonished at the kindness of strangers. We will all be holding her hand and hope that she will feel the love and support from us all, and that the blanket will bring whatever comfort it can.

Lemontruffles writes so movingly on her thread about her beloved husband, and has shared many memories, bless her heart. her thread is HERE. You will not fail to be moved by the love and warmth of her posts about him.

So to the Woolly Hug, we would be very grateful for your help.

We will need crocheters, knitters and donors (of funds or wool) I will co ordinate and do admin, and Knotty (KnottyLocks) is here and will help you with any queries you may have.

So if you are able to join with us, please PM me, and also if you are offering to donate, or need a donor, I can help match you up.

Thank you so much.
Thanks

The wool we are using:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (not the Baby cashmerino)
  • Rowan Cashsoft DK
  • Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK.
  • Artesano Superwash Merino DK.

Just from these yarns please as they are very similar and we know they can be combined for wash and wear.

4mm crochet hook or knitting needles
6 inch squares

The Colours
Lemontruffles has spoken so movingly about her husband's love for the countryside of North Wales, and to reflect that passion how she sees the blanket as a landscape, so :

Greens, darker purples, blues, silvers, cream.

If going for cream please use Debbie Bliss cashmerino DK 013
(Not bright colours for this please, and no pinks or lilacs, thank you)

Just sharing some of her words about him
He was Welsh and loved the countryside of North Wales especially. He loved walking. He loved going to the pub and having the biggest laugh he could. He had a fantastic sense of humour and he loved having fun. He was warm hearted, he had a spirit of pure generosity - though with a 'sticking point' stubborn streak! - he was no angel. He was very adventurous about life. He was a proper hippy in the 60s and 70s. He had an amazing memory for all sorts of things, and a very wide ranging and strange knowledge of very odd things. Such an interesting man. A man with endless and deep humanity towards all the people he met. He was very well loved. He had a deep maturity and wisdom about other people.

Oh, and music! Not male voice choirs! Rock and blues from the 60s and 70s, and the manic street preachers. He had great taste. Also photographs. He was always photographing things, all sorts of random things, all sorts of bits of nature, and landscapes. He loved his camera.

Suggestions for motifs

  • Any motifs of the natural world - trees, leaves, flowers, birds (esp crows )
  • Can anyone find a Welsh dragon design or a harp? We'd love to find these for her.
  • Anything to reflect he was a Welshman.
  • Music, photography related
  • We have an initial, could you PM me if this is something you'd like to do.

There are many relevant patterns for knitters and crocheters linked to from our website under Crafting

Reading her words gives us lots of motifs to think about for sure, but please don't feel daunted by these suggestions, we love plain squares and simple textures too. They look as stunning as the more complex squares and actually play a vital role in the overall effect.

Previous blankets can be seen on our website. We also have a Facebook page MNWoollyHugs and are on Twitter @MNWoollyHugs. If you 'like' or 'follow' us you'll be updated on progress via your feed.

As always, we thank you so much for your support.
Thinking of lemontruffles Xx

Skoggy - see, I just don't get that. Knitting is in rows, it's logical - even if all you do is knit & purl you can 'make stuff'. Crochet - it's mad - loops, lengths, whatsits all over the place!! Very confusing.

Rosie - Pru - hmm, I had a cocker spaniel like that once, beautiful - but blimey, a handful when she didn't get what she wanted (company 24/7). Miss her loads though. We do have Barbara Woodhouse here though - perhaphs she can help Grin Sorry I didn't do the square yesterday. I should be doing a lot of stuff this morning, but as you are waiting for me, I might just have to knit instead Wink

Barbara - LOL You may have meant yourself, but I think it definitely applied to my posts too Grin

Pistey - How could you not be? She's beautiful isn't she!!

Biwi - I'm sure it will be a lovely square :)

DameFanny · 19/01/2013 10:36

Pistey - I found it in a stitch book, but will put up the instructions here next time I'm on a laptop (phone's too tricky for that sort of thing)

Somersaults · 19/01/2013 10:50

My wool arrived!!! Thank you so much, a gorgeous blue and cream. I shall crack on this evening once DD has gone to bed. I will be browsing patterns all afternoon :)

Youcanringmybell · 19/01/2013 10:59

Pistey - I sent some squares for lemontruffles blanket but left the slip of paper out Blush

Three green and three Navy..they are ribbed and plain etc. Sorry for any confusion. Thanks

RedRosie · 19/01/2013 14:52

Waiting with baited breath Chipping! Honestly though, please don't put your life on hold or anything ...

Hey Biwi - I went though a stage where I either had an extra stitch or one less on every other row ... Even now it happens occasionally as I'm not getting any better still learning and so slow. One of the lovely things about the blankets is all the help available. Last year Trib in particular was an absolute STAR. And endlessly patient.

It's so nice to be back. This is Mumsnet at its best. The vipers are cuddly. I may have to do a poem. :)

GlaikitFizzog · 19/01/2013 15:01

BIWI when you first start knitting you can't tell the difference between stitches or what they are meant to looking like so if you get to the end of a row with the same amount of stitches you started with then that's a bonus! But as a knitter of only 11 months I can assure you you will soon be clickety clacking with the best of us!

Afternoon all Grin

I seem to be managing to stick at 35 stitches, and the square doesn't look wonky at the edges, so I'm not going to do anything different.

Thanks to BarbaraWoodlouse for sending me some really useful pictures!

KnottyLocks · 19/01/2013 16:32

Go, BIWI!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 19/01/2013 16:46

I have just finished my first square for Lemontruffle's blanket . I have cast on for the second square and hope to get them in the post by the end of the week. DD bought me the Nicky Epstein "knitting block by block book " book for Christmas and there are some wonderful patterns in it although I am having to resize them.

BigStickBIWI · 19/01/2013 17:34

I still haven't a bloody clue what you are all on about half the time Grin

And good luck with that wobbly edge, whoever is lumbered gets my square to incorporate!

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee · 19/01/2013 19:25

Evening all :)

Biwi - I feel like that when OYBBK explains why it will or wont snow/rain/be sunny - it's like listening to someone speak in a foreign language :)

Rosie - sorry! My good intentions to get it done this morning didn't pan out. People just kept 'popping in' and I couldn't knit this while they were here as I needed to think about it! Well, cross fingers, it seems to be a good 6" across (a tiny bit skimpy but would definitely be fine, 37 was a bit wide but not bad - I guess 36 would have been best but wanted to stick to an odd number for the balance of the pattern). I'm half way through and it's looking good to be 6" at 47 rows. The bottom of the note is 'ok' but I'll play with the numbers to get them a better shape next time. Do you want me to type out this pattern for you, or do you want to wait until I've finished it completely and tweeked the note shape?? (Hopefully tomorrow, but no promises?!).

Somersaults · 19/01/2013 20:39

I'm thinking about this pattern - I think the interlocking rings are lovely for lemon and her husband. Just need to dig out a small amount of an appropriate colour to go with the ones from my donor and then I'm good to go with it. I'm just nervous trying a new pattern with donor wool in case it goes wrong!

RedRosie · 19/01/2013 20:40

Chipping - a hero!

I'll wait. Then at least I will know for sure... I may start a second very very simple pattern square that I can't mess up completely

In return for everyones patience I've put another picture of Pru up for her fan base, from when she was little. Don't be fooled by the sweet demeanour.

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee · 19/01/2013 21:08

Rosie - she is just so adorable!! I am totally taken in by the sweet demeanour!! :) Well, mustn't hang around too long, wool is calling!!

cheesecheeseplease · 19/01/2013 22:22

Ive finished my squares! will post on tues when I'm off work/ hopefully not snowed in! Grin

lemontruffles · 20/01/2013 02:04

Hello everyone, this is lemontruffles.

I've finally read this thread and I'm blown away. As a few people have said, I am not well known on here. I name changed about 6 months ago: I was bored with my original name and wanted something to reflect my greed culinary interests. And have hardly posted since simply because I've been soooo busy.

Yet you are showing extraordinary kindness to me and my children. I think about this wonderful creation every day; I am very excited about it, and thinking of all the effort and love being put into this blanket always, always lifts my heart.

We had my husband's funeral last week. It was a cheerful celebration of his life more than anything. However, since then I've been struggling badly with simply missing having him here, at home, with me, especially when I need a hug. Lots of tears, these are sad days, even though I know he's in a happy place: but I am selfish, and want him here to comfort me.

Woolly Hugs are so aptly named. Thank you everyone who is helping to make this blanket. I can't thank you all enough. Thanks Thanks Thanks
