Very sad news I'm afraid. Lemontruffles' husband died this week on New Year's Day after living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Such devastating news. Our hearts go out to her. In her own words, he was the love of her life.
Sad

We have offered to make a blanket for her, and are so pleased that she has said she would love one. She is clearly so very moved by our offer and has said she is astonished at the kindness of strangers. We will all be holding her hand and hope that she will feel the love and support from us all, and that the blanket will bring whatever comfort it can.

Lemontruffles writes so movingly on her thread about her beloved husband, and has shared many memories, bless her heart. her thread is HERE. You will not fail to be moved by the love and warmth of her posts about him.

So to the Woolly Hug, we would be very grateful for your help.

We will need crocheters, knitters and donors (of funds or wool) I will co ordinate and do admin, and Knotty (KnottyLocks) is here and will help you with any queries you may have.

So if you are able to join with us, please PM me, and also if you are offering to donate, or need a donor, I can help match you up.

Thank you so much.
Thanks

The wool we are using:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (not the Baby cashmerino)
  • Rowan Cashsoft DK
  • Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK.
  • Artesano Superwash Merino DK.

Just from these yarns please as they are very similar and we know they can be combined for wash and wear.

4mm crochet hook or knitting needles
6 inch squares

The Colours
Lemontruffles has spoken so movingly about her husband's love for the countryside of North Wales, and to reflect that passion how she sees the blanket as a landscape, so :

Greens, darker purples, blues, silvers, cream.

If going for cream please use Debbie Bliss cashmerino DK 013
(Not bright colours for this please, and no pinks or lilacs, thank you)

Just sharing some of her words about him
He was Welsh and loved the countryside of North Wales especially. He loved walking. He loved going to the pub and having the biggest laugh he could. He had a fantastic sense of humour and he loved having fun. He was warm hearted, he had a spirit of pure generosity - though with a 'sticking point' stubborn streak! - he was no angel. He was very adventurous about life. He was a proper hippy in the 60s and 70s. He had an amazing memory for all sorts of things, and a very wide ranging and strange knowledge of very odd things. Such an interesting man. A man with endless and deep humanity towards all the people he met. He was very well loved. He had a deep maturity and wisdom about other people.

Oh, and music! Not male voice choirs! Rock and blues from the 60s and 70s, and the manic street preachers. He had great taste. Also photographs. He was always photographing things, all sorts of random things, all sorts of bits of nature, and landscapes. He loved his camera.

Suggestions for motifs

  • Any motifs of the natural world - trees, leaves, flowers, birds (esp crows )
  • Can anyone find a Welsh dragon design or a harp? We'd love to find these for her.
  • Anything to reflect he was a Welshman.
  • Music, photography related
  • We have an initial, could you PM me if this is something you'd like to do.

There are many relevant patterns for knitters and crocheters linked to from our website under Crafting

Reading her words gives us lots of motifs to think about for sure, but please don't feel daunted by these suggestions, we love plain squares and simple textures too. They look as stunning as the more complex squares and actually play a vital role in the overall effect.

Previous blankets can be seen on our website. We also have a Facebook page MNWoollyHugs and are on Twitter @MNWoollyHugs. If you 'like' or 'follow' us you'll be updated on progress via your feed.

As always, we thank you so much for your support.
Thinking of lemontruffles Xx

Oh and we have no snow, only ice. Ds has discovered skidding Hmm I might book a bed at a&e if he carries on the way he was this afternoon.

BarbaraWoodlouse · 18/01/2013 17:48

I panic bought some yarn today. We're nearly out of milk but I could crochet til Christmas (and beyond actually).

Pistey is lovely. As are you all. It may be frizzin but I'm feeling warm and fuzzy. Grin And that's before the Wine kicks in

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee · 18/01/2013 17:48

Rosie - will do :) Will crack on in a bit. Just need to do a few things first. Though if Glaikit is sure that's what she knit last time then it came up a great size (according to pistey), so ... very confused!!

GlaikitFizzog · 18/01/2013 17:52

And as if by magic the snow starts :)

BigStickBIWI · 18/01/2013 18:04

My square is looking very small - I cast on 34 stitches and despite the fact that I now appear to be knitting 36 (I have no idea), it doesn't seem like it will be 6 inches. Is it because I'm doing stocking stitch? [novice]

BigStickBIWI · 18/01/2013 18:04

I am quite a tight knitter, it would appear.

BarbaraWoodlouse · 18/01/2013 18:07

Gauge is so difficult to compare isn't it!

I know that I knitted this dragonfly square for a previous blanket and it was OK sizewise. It's on 56 rows but frustratingly I can't recall if I took any of the 12 top/bottom border rows out. I might have done four rows top and bottom rather than six which would mean 52 total or even three which would take us to 49 (close to Chipping's 47). So all in all this wittering is no use at all!

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee · 18/01/2013 18:32

So all in all this wittering is no use at all!

Grin

Frustrating though isn't it. It is one advantage that crochet has over knitting. But I can't crochet prefer the look of knitting.

KnottyLocks · 18/01/2013 18:41
Shock
Skoggy · 18/01/2013 18:54

I can't knit at all. I've tried lots of times but I just can't seem to get to grips with it. I took to crochet like a duck to water... and I can't stop! Grin

RedRosie · 18/01/2013 18:55

Oh yes Chipping. Pru LOOKS adorable. Butter wouldn't melt. It wouldn't have time to, as she EATS everything.

Barbara - the dragonfly is nice. I like that. I'm now v confused (doesn't take much) about the size of my note... I shall await Chipping's test.

Knotty has a luxuriant beard apparently. She strokes it when thinking.

BarbaraWoodlouse · 18/01/2013 18:55

For the avoidance of doubt, I was referring to my own wittering, not anyone else's valued discursive narrative Wink

I'm pretty sure my crochet turns out different every time too. Grin

Flowersandfaff · 18/01/2013 19:02

Yay! Glad they arrived safely and they're good enough!! I'm feeling all warm and fuzzy despite the snow, love to lemon truffles.

MrsPennyapple · 18/01/2013 19:19

BIWI how many rows have you done? It always looks small when you've just cast on, but once you've knit a couple of inches you can stretch it out and see a bit more realistically how big it's going to be. I always find mine widens slightly after I take it off the needles as well.

MrsPennyapple · 18/01/2013 19:22

I mean it always looks narrow when you've just cast on.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 18/01/2013 19:38

I am a member of the Pru Fan Club Smile

Knotty does have a beard and it is smashing. Wine

MrsPennyapple · 18/01/2013 20:51

Get you BIWI, you sound like an old hand :) I'll indulge in a bit of woolly chat any time of day or night! What's the width now, stretched out? I reckon if it's approaching 5.5 inches, it'll be ok once it comes off the needles.

BigStickBIWI · 18/01/2013 21:14

Will look for a ruler ...

BigStickBIWI · 18/01/2013 21:15
BigStickBIWI · 18/01/2013 21:18

It can definitely be stretched to 6 inches when off the needles

Now. If anyone can tell me why I keep ending up with extra stitches, I would be very grateful!

DameFanny · 18/01/2013 21:26

Wow Pistey, impressed the squares turned up already!

It's a Catherine wheel pattern, and I thought the blues and green looked sort of organic together - very satisfying to do :-)

RatherBeOnThePiste · 19/01/2013 07:49

DameFanny It is absolutely lovely, is there a link to a pattern so we can add it to the website?

BIWI - tis a whole new day for knitting chat for you. Good times Smile

Morning all Brew

Just away to PMs Thanks

BIWI, my immediate thought is that you are perhaps not completing a stitch, ie not actually pushing the stitch that you've just knitted off the needle, and thus end up knitting the same stitch twice. I think it's quite easy do as a beginner on a purl row.

My Knitty Gritty book also suggests a couple of other common errors - holding the yarn in the wrong place at the beginning of a row and therefore creating what looks like an extra stitch that you then knit, and picking up a "stitch" from the row below by not knitting precisely enough. In the second example the extra stitch is crossed over. I'll see if I can photo the page and PM you as the pictures might make it clearer what I mean.

In any event, the best advice is to keep counting after every row so you can pick up mistakes quickly and only have to go back one row to corrrect. Dullsville on the counting front but much less galling than having to frog the whole lot!

BigStickBIWI · 19/01/2013 08:51

Ah. I think you may be right. I thought it was something to do with the purl rows. I will count after each row as I am not frogging the whole bloody lot!

I don't think I'm holding the yarn in the wrong place, but I'll double check that.

thank you!
