Very sad news I'm afraid. Lemontruffles' husband died this week on New Year's Day after living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Such devastating news. Our hearts go out to her. In her own words, he was the love of her life.
Sad

We have offered to make a blanket for her, and are so pleased that she has said she would love one. She is clearly so very moved by our offer and has said she is astonished at the kindness of strangers. We will all be holding her hand and hope that she will feel the love and support from us all, and that the blanket will bring whatever comfort it can.

Lemontruffles writes so movingly on her thread about her beloved husband, and has shared many memories, bless her heart. her thread is HERE. You will not fail to be moved by the love and warmth of her posts about him.

So to the Woolly Hug, we would be very grateful for your help.

We will need crocheters, knitters and donors (of funds or wool) I will co ordinate and do admin, and Knotty (KnottyLocks) is here and will help you with any queries you may have.

So if you are able to join with us, please PM me, and also if you are offering to donate, or need a donor, I can help match you up.

Thank you so much.
Thanks

The wool we are using:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (not the Baby cashmerino)
  • Rowan Cashsoft DK
  • Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK.
  • Artesano Superwash Merino DK.

Just from these yarns please as they are very similar and we know they can be combined for wash and wear.

4mm crochet hook or knitting needles
6 inch squares

The Colours
Lemontruffles has spoken so movingly about her husband's love for the countryside of North Wales, and to reflect that passion how she sees the blanket as a landscape, so :

Greens, darker purples, blues, silvers, cream.

If going for cream please use Debbie Bliss cashmerino DK 013
(Not bright colours for this please, and no pinks or lilacs, thank you)

Just sharing some of her words about him
He was Welsh and loved the countryside of North Wales especially. He loved walking. He loved going to the pub and having the biggest laugh he could. He had a fantastic sense of humour and he loved having fun. He was warm hearted, he had a spirit of pure generosity - though with a 'sticking point' stubborn streak! - he was no angel. He was very adventurous about life. He was a proper hippy in the 60s and 70s. He had an amazing memory for all sorts of things, and a very wide ranging and strange knowledge of very odd things. Such an interesting man. A man with endless and deep humanity towards all the people he met. He was very well loved. He had a deep maturity and wisdom about other people.

Oh, and music! Not male voice choirs! Rock and blues from the 60s and 70s, and the manic street preachers. He had great taste. Also photographs. He was always photographing things, all sorts of random things, all sorts of bits of nature, and landscapes. He loved his camera.

Suggestions for motifs

  • Any motifs of the natural world - trees, leaves, flowers, birds (esp crows )
  • Can anyone find a Welsh dragon design or a harp? We'd love to find these for her.
  • Anything to reflect he was a Welshman.
  • Music, photography related
  • We have an initial, could you PM me if this is something you'd like to do.

There are many relevant patterns for knitters and crocheters linked to from our website under Crafting

Reading her words gives us lots of motifs to think about for sure, but please don't feel daunted by these suggestions, we love plain squares and simple textures too. They look as stunning as the more complex squares and actually play a vital role in the overall effect.

Previous blankets can be seen on our website. We also have a Facebook page MNWoollyHugs and are on Twitter @MNWoollyHugs. If you 'like' or 'follow' us you'll be updated on progress via your feed.

As always, we thank you so much for your support.
Thinking of lemontruffles Xx

RatherBeOnThePiste · 20/01/2013 09:31

Hello there lovely lemon, the biggest of big hugs for you Xx

We are so honoured to make this blanket for him and for you all, although how we wish it were not needed. We are thinking so much of you and your family. As our community came together around you, there were such strong feelings of kindness, compassion and love, and it means the world that you can already take some comfort from that.

The blanketeers are an amazing bunch, and inspired by your deep love for your husband, have been researching crow patterns, music notes, harps, dragons, knitting patterns to reflect your love, we even have a lovely working out how to crochet a glass full of Guinness. It will be a very special blanket for a very special man and his family Xx

Lovely lemon, thank you so much for coming on the thread and for your words, they really mean so much.

Much love to you, we are all thinking of you, big hugs

Pistey Xx

Oh Lemon Thanksxx

KnottyLocks · 20/01/2013 09:46

Sending much love to you and your family, Lemon.

Each stitch on this blanket will be done with love and with you all in our thoughts xxx

MinnieBar · 20/01/2013 10:09

Lemon if my dodgy squares bring even the tiniest bit of comfort then it's the least I can do. I want to say that I'm happy to help, but of course I'm not happy that this blanket is needed in the first place.

And you are absolutely not being selfish - you are being human. Go easy on yourself. Thanks

BarbaraWoodlouse · 20/01/2013 10:34

Lemon, big hugs to you. Agree with Minnie, go easy on yourself, accept that some days and hours will be better than others.

I love your description of the funeral as a cheerful celebration of his life, I hope this hug will turn out to be the same.

Thanks

Thanks to LemonTruffles.

I always feel powerless hearing of other's losses so it's lovely to be able to do something, however miniscule, that might help a little.

Dutchoma · 20/01/2013 10:57

Somersaults · 20/01/2013 11:00

I can only echo and agree with everyone else's posts. They all put it so eloquently that I can't add to it. It is, as always, an honour to make something so special that it is not just a hug but a celebration too. Thing of you often, Lemon xxx

Skoggy · 20/01/2013 11:21

Hello Lemontruffles. Thanks for popping on the thread to say hello. Big hugs from my family to yours. (((HUGS)))

DameFanny · 20/01/2013 12:26

Right, got that Catherine Wheel Pattern.

English terminology, worked in 2 colours (A&B). For a 6 inch square I used a starting chain of 27. The cluster is effectively working trebles together over the stated number of stitches - either 4 (at the end) or 7 (for the middle) - so yo, through stitch, yo and pull though, yo and pull through 2 loops on hook, yo, through next stitch etc until you've made half a treble (but not a half-treble!) through the right number of stitches. It's easily counted, as the number of loops on your hook will be one more than the number of stitches to work.

That probably sounds horribly complicated but I swear it all makes sense on the second row and subsequent.

Row 1
So, 27 chains in col A, double into 2nd chain from hook, double into next ch, +skip 3ch, 7 trebles into next ch, skip 3ch, 1 double into each of next 3ch; from + once more to last 4 ch, skip 3 ch, 4 trebles into last cha, bring in Col B on the last yo of the final treble, turn.

Row 2
1 ch, 1 double into next 2 stitches, +3 ch, 1 cluster over next 7 stitches, 3 ch, 1 double into next 3 stitches; rep from + once more to last 4 sts, 3 ch, 1 cluster over last st, skip turning chain, turn

Row 3 still in colour B
3ch (counts as 1 treble) 3 trebles into 1st stitch +skip 3chains, 1 double into each of next 3 doubles, 7 trebles into loop which closed the 7 tr cluster (can you guess what it is yet? [Rolf Harris]); repeat from + once more finishing with skip 3ch, 1 double into each of last 2 doubles - pulling through colour A on final double, skip turning chain, turn.

Row 4 In colour A
3 ch (counts as 1 treble) skip 1st stitch, 1 cluster over next 3 stitches, +3 ch, 1 double into each of next 3 st, 3 ch, 1 cluster over next 7 stitches; repeat from + once more finishing with 3ch, 1 double into next st, 1 double into top of turning chaing, turn

Row 5 getting bored now
1 ch, 1 double into each of first 2 doubles, + skip 3ch, 7 trebles into loop closing next cluster, skip 3 ch, 1 double into each of next 3 doubles; rep from + once more ending skip 3 ch, 4 trebles into top of turning chain (switching 2 colour B on final yo of final treble) turn.

Phew.

Nope. Not a bloody clue. Grin

GlaikitFizzog · 20/01/2013 13:49

I Don't get crochet speak either BIWI! So don't worry there!

DameFanny · 20/01/2013 15:38

it's a secret code we use to exclude knitters

No, it's simple honest Hmm

GlaikitFizzog · 20/01/2013 15:40

Only doubles and trebles I understand are on a dartboard :)

RedRosie · 20/01/2013 15:58

Learning to knit took ages and ages ...
Months of practice and lots of stages,
Crochet? It looks even tougher
For this craftily challenged and aged duffer!

:)

Jacksmania · 20/01/2013 16:15

((((((((((Lemontruffles)))))))))))

BigStickBIWI · 20/01/2013 16:19

The only doubles and trebles I understand are in the bar!

BarbaraWoodlouse · 20/01/2013 16:33

You want to stick with British Crochet then BIWI - you get a tripple treble that way [hic] Grin

Yes, just when you think crochet can't blow your mind anymore you discover that US crochet and British crochet use the same terms for different stitches! Confused

Nice poem Rosie, we need poetry to cheer us up on a chilly day like today.

BarbaraWoodlouse · 20/01/2013 16:34

Triple Blush [not drunk yet honest]

DameFanny · 20/01/2013 16:57

Oh bugger, forgot to add on the mammoth post that rows 2-5 are the ones to repeat till you've got to desired size.
