Very sad news I'm afraid. Lemontruffles' husband died this week on New Year's Day after living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Such devastating news. Our hearts go out to her. In her own words, he was the love of her life.
Sad

We have offered to make a blanket for her, and are so pleased that she has said she would love one. She is clearly so very moved by our offer and has said she is astonished at the kindness of strangers. We will all be holding her hand and hope that she will feel the love and support from us all, and that the blanket will bring whatever comfort it can.

Lemontruffles writes so movingly on her thread about her beloved husband, and has shared many memories, bless her heart. her thread is HERE. You will not fail to be moved by the love and warmth of her posts about him.

So to the Woolly Hug, we would be very grateful for your help.

We will need crocheters, knitters and donors (of funds or wool) I will co ordinate and do admin, and Knotty (KnottyLocks) is here and will help you with any queries you may have.

So if you are able to join with us, please PM me, and also if you are offering to donate, or need a donor, I can help match you up.

Thank you so much.
Thanks

The wool we are using:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (not the Baby cashmerino)
  • Rowan Cashsoft DK
  • Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK.
  • Artesano Superwash Merino DK.

Just from these yarns please as they are very similar and we know they can be combined for wash and wear.

4mm crochet hook or knitting needles
6 inch squares

The Colours
Lemontruffles has spoken so movingly about her husband's love for the countryside of North Wales, and to reflect that passion how she sees the blanket as a landscape, so :

Greens, darker purples, blues, silvers, cream.

If going for cream please use Debbie Bliss cashmerino DK 013
(Not bright colours for this please, and no pinks or lilacs, thank you)

Just sharing some of her words about him
He was Welsh and loved the countryside of North Wales especially. He loved walking. He loved going to the pub and having the biggest laugh he could. He had a fantastic sense of humour and he loved having fun. He was warm hearted, he had a spirit of pure generosity - though with a 'sticking point' stubborn streak! - he was no angel. He was very adventurous about life. He was a proper hippy in the 60s and 70s. He had an amazing memory for all sorts of things, and a very wide ranging and strange knowledge of very odd things. Such an interesting man. A man with endless and deep humanity towards all the people he met. He was very well loved. He had a deep maturity and wisdom about other people.

Oh, and music! Not male voice choirs! Rock and blues from the 60s and 70s, and the manic street preachers. He had great taste. Also photographs. He was always photographing things, all sorts of random things, all sorts of bits of nature, and landscapes. He loved his camera.

Suggestions for motifs

  • Any motifs of the natural world - trees, leaves, flowers, birds (esp crows )
  • Can anyone find a Welsh dragon design or a harp? We'd love to find these for her.
  • Anything to reflect he was a Welshman.
  • Music, photography related
  • We have an initial, could you PM me if this is something you'd like to do.

There are many relevant patterns for knitters and crocheters linked to from our website under Crafting

Reading her words gives us lots of motifs to think about for sure, but please don't feel daunted by these suggestions, we love plain squares and simple textures too. They look as stunning as the more complex squares and actually play a vital role in the overall effect.

Previous blankets can be seen on our website. We also have a Facebook page MNWoollyHugs and are on Twitter @MNWoollyHugs. If you 'like' or 'follow' us you'll be updated on progress via your feed.

As always, we thank you so much for your support.
Thinking of lemontruffles Xx

Pistey and Knotty
Thanks

Love the crow Trib

Wow, I admire your skill Fizzy

Jacksmania · 13/01/2013 23:27

Have been checking my mailbox every day which is ridiculous as I'm sure wool doesn't fly to Canada from the UK First Class and practicing stitches. Can't wait to get started :)

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 13/01/2013 23:35

Jacks - would it be faster for you to order from the US? I've used yarn.com and Yarnmarket before.

Jacksmania · 13/01/2013 23:46

Well I did offer to buy it on eBay but lovely Pistey emailed me and said she'd post me some Blush

I'm still waiting for mine to arrive as well. I bought it from loveknitting.com, which I assumed was US because it was .com rather than .co.uk, and Debbie Bliss was on sale, and there was another 10% off for a first order...but the confirmation email said it would come by air in 5-7 days, so I guess it might be coming from the UK as well.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 14/01/2013 06:43

Morning! Snow all gone here! :(

It has made my head fall off pistey! I don't think I'll get the dragon done. I'll have another look for an easier pattern to follow.

droitwichmummy · 14/01/2013 12:52

WOOL ALERT!
House of Fraser Birmingham has Rowan Cashsoft and Patons Fairytale on offer. If you buy a pack of 10 Rowan they cost £30 instead of £57.50. The Patons are £15 instead of £29.50. They don't have all colours so if anyone wants some let me know what you want and I will see if they have it

RatherBeOnThePiste · 14/01/2013 13:03

Ooooooooo!!

Like the sound of that!

Shall think on DWM. When might you be able to go?

Lunchtime and just catching up with PMs Thanks

Gorgeous green ball of goodness dropped through my door this morning. Thank you to my donor - will try to do you proud Smile

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 14/01/2013 13:27

I love the Rowan Ballad Blue (which has been discontinued).

RatherBeOnThePiste · 14/01/2013 13:47

Same Shredded,

There are so few colours left in the Rowan cashsoft I do wonder if it's on its way out Sad

Also discontinued Mist - 505, a lovely soft silvery grey
and Spruce 541 - a sort of bottle green, we had some in our stash of that and there will be quite a bit in lemon's blanket.

Good news Tweet

RatherBeOnThePiste · 14/01/2013 13:59

Oh arse, PMs now playing silly buggers it seems. Maybe because it is so frrrizzzin.

Sorry, I try again in a min

OP posts:
RatherBeOnThePiste · 14/01/2013 15:36

Think we are all OK again. Maybe if anyone is around could they send me a PM to check they are working that way? I always worry when Pms are being flaky that we will miss sommat!

OP posts:
EllenJaneisstillnotmyname · 14/01/2013 15:54

Pistey, shall I send to the same address as for Cupoftea's squares? (To save overloading the PMs.)

EllenJaneisstillnotmyname · 14/01/2013 15:55

Ah, I'll send you a PM.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 14/01/2013 15:55

One of the balls I have sent back today is Mist Pistey. Out of the 3 wools for hugs Cashsoft has been my favourite to work with, I like the silkiness of it.

I had a PM from you about 2pm BTW.

RedRosie · 14/01/2013 16:16

Rosie is working on the musical note square ... She may have to write a poem.

:)

GlaikitFizzog · 14/01/2013 16:38

Crotchet or semi quaver
Rosie's resolve, it does not waver
Knit and purl
She's your girl
Let's hope she keeps it squarer?! Hmm

I'll get me coat!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 14/01/2013 17:01

Ooooo, Rosie has competition for Woolly Hugs Poet Laureate (patent pending)

Grin
