Very sad news I'm afraid. Lemontruffles' husband died this week on New Year's Day after living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Such devastating news. Our hearts go out to her. In her own words, he was the love of her life.
Sad

We have offered to make a blanket for her, and are so pleased that she has said she would love one. She is clearly so very moved by our offer and has said she is astonished at the kindness of strangers. We will all be holding her hand and hope that she will feel the love and support from us all, and that the blanket will bring whatever comfort it can.

Lemontruffles writes so movingly on her thread about her beloved husband, and has shared many memories, bless her heart. her thread is HERE. You will not fail to be moved by the love and warmth of her posts about him.

So to the Woolly Hug, we would be very grateful for your help.

We will need crocheters, knitters and donors (of funds or wool) I will co ordinate and do admin, and Knotty (KnottyLocks) is here and will help you with any queries you may have.

So if you are able to join with us, please PM me, and also if you are offering to donate, or need a donor, I can help match you up.

Thank you so much.
Thanks

The wool we are using:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (not the Baby cashmerino)
  • Rowan Cashsoft DK
  • Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK.
  • Artesano Superwash Merino DK.

Just from these yarns please as they are very similar and we know they can be combined for wash and wear.

4mm crochet hook or knitting needles
6 inch squares

The Colours
Lemontruffles has spoken so movingly about her husband's love for the countryside of North Wales, and to reflect that passion how she sees the blanket as a landscape, so :

Greens, darker purples, blues, silvers, cream.

If going for cream please use Debbie Bliss cashmerino DK 013
(Not bright colours for this please, and no pinks or lilacs, thank you)

Just sharing some of her words about him
He was Welsh and loved the countryside of North Wales especially. He loved walking. He loved going to the pub and having the biggest laugh he could. He had a fantastic sense of humour and he loved having fun. He was warm hearted, he had a spirit of pure generosity - though with a 'sticking point' stubborn streak! - he was no angel. He was very adventurous about life. He was a proper hippy in the 60s and 70s. He had an amazing memory for all sorts of things, and a very wide ranging and strange knowledge of very odd things. Such an interesting man. A man with endless and deep humanity towards all the people he met. He was very well loved. He had a deep maturity and wisdom about other people.

Oh, and music! Not male voice choirs! Rock and blues from the 60s and 70s, and the manic street preachers. He had great taste. Also photographs. He was always photographing things, all sorts of random things, all sorts of bits of nature, and landscapes. He loved his camera.

Suggestions for motifs

  • Any motifs of the natural world - trees, leaves, flowers, birds (esp crows )
  • Can anyone find a Welsh dragon design or a harp? We'd love to find these for her.
  • Anything to reflect he was a Welshman.
  • Music, photography related
  • We have an initial, could you PM me if this is something you'd like to do.

There are many relevant patterns for knitters and crocheters linked to from our website under Crafting

Reading her words gives us lots of motifs to think about for sure, but please don't feel daunted by these suggestions, we love plain squares and simple textures too. They look as stunning as the more complex squares and actually play a vital role in the overall effect.

Previous blankets can be seen on our website. We also have a Facebook page MNWoollyHugs and are on Twitter @MNWoollyHugs. If you 'like' or 'follow' us you'll be updated on progress via your feed.

As always, we thank you so much for your support.

Have a gander at for this style of two-colour knitting (intarsia).

RedRosie · 12/01/2013 19:42

Knotty has a beard?
That seems somewhat weird...
I always see Knotty
As a glamorous hotty!

Thank you Trib. You are amazing. Whether I can learn that by 31st is another thing!

WednesdayNext · 12/01/2013 19:44

I'm trying honeycomb stitch for the first time. Not very exciting, but something a bit different!

Dutchoma · 12/01/2013 21:38

15 rows of dragon completed. Looks like nothing on earth, but that doesn't mean it won't work. On the other hand, it might mean it won't work. Oma is going to bed.
Good night.

I think it's crow day today! Although I do have a 28 page document to read on Local Authority codes, which shall I do first ...

StellaMarie · 13/01/2013 12:50

Thank-you to my lovely donor - I received 2 balls of wool yesterday (Pale Grey and Airforce Blue). I will get hooking this afternoon after I've done some more revision/cramming for my exams this week!

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 13/01/2013 12:52

Morning Brew

Sounds like a fun packed morning trib Grin. Looking forward to seeing your crow, and Dutchoma's dragon.

I'm still waiting for my wool to turn up (sound familiar?).

tribpot · 13/01/2013 12:54

Shredded, are these yarns difficult to source in the US? I wonder if we ought to be trying to find an equivalent to make it easier for you.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 13/01/2013 13:10

No, not really trib, although it's kind of you to suggest that. Deramores deliver here, and there are plenty of US yarn suppliers which stock them, it's just that I need to order online as there aren't any shops which stock them locally. I tried a new supplier this time, as they had a wider selection (and a discount) but they are taking a long time to arrive.

I only have a couple of months left here, and will be back in the UK for a bit so the problem will disappear Grin.

tribpot · 13/01/2013 13:23

I didn't realise you were coming back to these fair shores! How exciting.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 13/01/2013 13:26

Yes, it's all happening too fast for my liking. I'm looking forward to coming home, but not to leaving here if that makes sense.

tribpot · 13/01/2013 13:55

Yes, definitely. Are you likely to be heading back to the US after your time in the UK this time, or on to pastures new?

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 13/01/2013 14:16

Pastures new for me, but not until the summer. I won't say where, as it will probably out me even further than I am already

MissPricklePants · 13/01/2013 17:29

first square is completed, it is a tiny bit short of 6 inch but another round will make it too big, it will stretch to 6 though if thats ok?onto square number 2 later this eve!

KnottyLocks · 13/01/2013 17:55

As long as it stretches to 6" easily, all is fine. Smile

GlaikitFizzog · 13/01/2013 18:00

|> this is a white flag! I surrender to the dragon square.

MissPricklePants · 13/01/2013 18:10

yeah it stretches easily enough, will do a couple more so if I get them bang on six you don't have to use the one thats a tad small.

tribpot · 13/01/2013 18:43

Crow Number 1 (and the legs of crow 2)

Glaikit, wazzup with this dragon square? I'm sure we can sort out.

GlaikitFizzog · 13/01/2013 19:02

It's 3 colour intarsia. Immightbtry it again, but in one colour knit and purl. Me and charts don't mix!

GlaikitFizzog · 13/01/2013 19:12

this one. But it's all to do with my concentration levels at the moment! I need a no thinking pattern!

tribpot · 13/01/2013 19:29

It's a bit on the big side for one of our squares as well. Just about doable, but ...

GlaikitFizzog · 13/01/2013 19:32

In my gauge in stst 38 stitches gets me a six inch width.and I did toy with taking it down a needle size to 3.75. It was spot on 6" when I frogged it.

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee · 13/01/2013 20:28

Evening all :)

Lovely crow there trib!

tribpot · 13/01/2013 20:34

Glaikit - sure, but the pattern goes right to the edges. You'd lose a stitch or two when it's put together ...
