Very sad news I'm afraid. Lemontruffles' husband died this week on New Year's Day after living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Such devastating news. Our hearts go out to her. In her own words, he was the love of her life.
Sad

We have offered to make a blanket for her, and are so pleased that she has said she would love one. She is clearly so very moved by our offer and has said she is astonished at the kindness of strangers. We will all be holding her hand and hope that she will feel the love and support from us all, and that the blanket will bring whatever comfort it can.

Lemontruffles writes so movingly on her thread about her beloved husband, and has shared many memories, bless her heart. her thread is HERE. You will not fail to be moved by the love and warmth of her posts about him.

So to the Woolly Hug, we would be very grateful for your help.

We will need crocheters, knitters and donors (of funds or wool) I will co ordinate and do admin, and Knotty (KnottyLocks) is here and will help you with any queries you may have.

So if you are able to join with us, please PM me, and also if you are offering to donate, or need a donor, I can help match you up.

Thank you so much.
Thanks

The wool we are using:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (not the Baby cashmerino)
  • Rowan Cashsoft DK
  • Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK.
  • Artesano Superwash Merino DK.

Just from these yarns please as they are very similar and we know they can be combined for wash and wear.

4mm crochet hook or knitting needles
6 inch squares

The Colours
Lemontruffles has spoken so movingly about her husband's love for the countryside of North Wales, and to reflect that passion how she sees the blanket as a landscape, so :

Greens, darker purples, blues, silvers, cream.

If going for cream please use Debbie Bliss cashmerino DK 013
(Not bright colours for this please, and no pinks or lilacs, thank you)

Just sharing some of her words about him
He was Welsh and loved the countryside of North Wales especially. He loved walking. He loved going to the pub and having the biggest laugh he could. He had a fantastic sense of humour and he loved having fun. He was warm hearted, he had a spirit of pure generosity - though with a 'sticking point' stubborn streak! - he was no angel. He was very adventurous about life. He was a proper hippy in the 60s and 70s. He had an amazing memory for all sorts of things, and a very wide ranging and strange knowledge of very odd things. Such an interesting man. A man with endless and deep humanity towards all the people he met. He was very well loved. He had a deep maturity and wisdom about other people.

Oh, and music! Not male voice choirs! Rock and blues from the 60s and 70s, and the manic street preachers. He had great taste. Also photographs. He was always photographing things, all sorts of random things, all sorts of bits of nature, and landscapes. He loved his camera.

Suggestions for motifs

  • Any motifs of the natural world - trees, leaves, flowers, birds (esp crows )
  • Can anyone find a Welsh dragon design or a harp? We'd love to find these for her.
  • Anything to reflect he was a Welshman.
  • Music, photography related
  • We have an initial, could you PM me if this is something you'd like to do.

There are many relevant patterns for knitters and crocheters linked to from our website under Crafting

Reading her words gives us lots of motifs to think about for sure, but please don't feel daunted by these suggestions, we love plain squares and simple textures too. They look as stunning as the more complex squares and actually play a vital role in the overall effect.

Previous blankets can be seen on our website. We also have a Facebook page MNWoollyHugs and are on Twitter @MNWoollyHugs. If you 'like' or 'follow' us you'll be updated on progress via your feed.

As always, we thank you so much for your support.
Thinking of lemontruffles Xx

My musical note may be frumpy...
It will DEFINITELY be lumpy,
But when magically part of a woolly hug...
It becomes something better, warm and snug.

Thanks Knotty, will just do one with some very like wooden style beads.

HaveToWearHeels · 14/01/2013 20:53

that should have read "light wooden style beads"

KnottyLocks · 14/01/2013 21:05

Sounds lovely, HaveTo Smile

Thanks everyone. As ever, your support is greatly appreciated and very touching. Thanks

Dutchoma · 14/01/2013 22:28

Have done a dragon, purl on plain and I don't think it looks like anything. I've posted a picture on my profile, it's pants.

OpheliaBumps · 14/01/2013 22:42

I think that looks dragonny oma, tis lovely!

I've got 2 squares done, a plainish one and a cable celtic knot, which has turned out rather well, excecpt it's only 5"

i'll try to add a round of crochet to it, as I don't think it'll even stretch to 6. Note to self, cable compresses a square, so the usual number of rows/stitches doesn't knit up to 6".

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 14/01/2013 23:59

I have wool!

All the way from the UK, and beautifully presented in a little gauze bag. I shall be using loveknitting.com again!

I'm attempting the twin trees from the crafters guide - wish me luck!

BellaVita · 15/01/2013 07:13

Brew for you all this morning, Bbbbrrrrrr

Vajazzler · 15/01/2013 07:20

Morning everyone. Still waiting for donor wool here. Think the postman thinks have a crush on him as I'm at the front door the minute I hear him walk up the drive Grin

Jules146 · 15/01/2013 10:49

Brew morning, hope all is well. Not managed much crocheting yet (1 square) hoping to do more tonight! Smile

Skoggy · 15/01/2013 11:33

Morning all!

Just wanted to post that Deramores has an offer on all Debbie Bliss yarn. 15% off! Use BLISS as the coupon code. Grin

BarbaraWoodlouse · 15/01/2013 11:51

Twin trees Shredded? Does that = double Valium? Shock

Oma, picture is too small ony phone to see if it's dragonny or not but either way it looks like a lovely, snuggly square of woolly love Smile

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 15/01/2013 12:00

Quite possibly Barbara Grin. I've only done the trunks so far so am not yet reaching for the bottle Smile.

Skoggy · 15/01/2013 12:08

Haha Barbara :) Well, it is very tempting.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 15/01/2013 15:57

So the two trees are done, but have come out a bit tall at almost 7 inches. Any good? If not, I'll squeeze them into something else I'm making, which has a number of slightly not-very-square squares Grin. I can make another one with slightly shorter trunks if it needs to be 6 inches.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 15/01/2013 16:38

Afternoon all Brew

Another busy day!

OP posts:
RatherBeOnThePiste · 15/01/2013 16:40

Oma lovely, why not send it, I'm sorry I can't see anything on the picture, and I'm sure it's not pants. X

Hoping more woolly wool has arrived with crafters

OP posts:
Dutchoma · 15/01/2013 16:48

OK, I'll send the whole kit and caboodle, but won't sewthe ends in on this one so you can undo it easily. I had a look on the Deramores site and the red is out of stock or I might have bought a ball just in case you wanted it as a double knitted Fair Isle square.
Let me know what you think I'm sure there is plenty of time to do another square and it won't cost the earth to send it. Will just go and pack it up and send it off.

Dutchoma · 15/01/2013 17:05

Actually, it is later than I thought it was, so although it is packed up it won't make the post office today. You should still have it on Thursday, it will go first thing tomorrow morning.
