Following on from our previous support thread please check in here if there's any help, particularly (but not exclusively) knitting help, you need for the squares for 3girlies, who sadly lost her beloved 6-year-old dd Flora recently.

The details of the blanket project are here and it directs you to the Crafting Guide on Woolly Hugs, with specific sections for crocheters and knitters. I am still maintaining the original document mostly because I haven't got around to separating out the stuff that's already on Woolly Hugs now from the newer suggestions we've had in the last few weeks. So please, by all means do send me suggestions for new patterns or ideas.

For those of you on Ravelry and participating in the Ravellenic games, I think squares could be entered under a number of categories such as balance beads, doubleknit boxing, lace longjump among possibly some others.

Woohoo!

Somersaults · 09/08/2012 18:03

Ok, what dodo when my square measures six inches across one part and only five across another? Will you be able to shrink/stretch it to make it fit?! Is it better for me to add another round and have it part the right size and part too big, or leave it as its and have part the right size and part too small?

LollipopViolet · 09/08/2012 18:18

Well, thanks to Pidj, my white granny square centre thing now has a nice pale green border. Rather glad this is the practice one as it's still a bit round for my liking, but hopefully I can sort that with the next round :)

Ah, just looked at some pictures and it looks like it's round 3 where (in theory) my square will become more, well, square!

PurplePidjin · 09/08/2012 20:04

Leave it, Somersaults, we can streeeeeetch it if needed

Yay, Lolli! How many chains are you doing between clusters? I only do one and they come up fairly square...

LollipopViolet · 09/08/2012 20:10

See, I was following one that said do 3, but I didn't like how it was looking so I've stopped that one for now, having a go at just, a square. Might try another just doing one chain later.

This is so relaxing :)

My Pictsie has a thread if anyone's interested :o

PurplePidjin · 09/08/2012 20:12

Loads of them do - Dances has had the same problem. They turn out a wiggly mess when i do them like that Hmm

Somersaults · 09/08/2012 23:15

Finished.

I added an extra little border around the edge because it didn't look finished without. It's wonky, I know, but I'd never crocheted at the start of the week so I'm quite pleased with it overall.

Major props to Pidj for helping me along the way :)

I was just looking at that one yesterday Trib.

prettybird · 10/08/2012 16:30

Belatedly signing in to this thread Blush

bobkate · 11/08/2012 10:53

Well I think I might have mastered managed rather than mastered simple stripes. Thanks to trib for the video link. It was really clear and helpful. I'm just hoping that there enough wool to make it to 6". That'll be my only square and I'd like to do some more for 3girlies but will need a donor. I'll PM you now Pistey and hope that's ok Smile

tribpot · 11/08/2012 10:56

Great, well done bobkate! The KnitFreedom videos are excellent, well worth looking at.

I've decided that I always intended my shawl project for the Ravellenic Games to last into the Paralympic period of the games, which is lucky as I am nowhere near finished Grin So this weekend I'm gonna knock out a few squares so I can at least get something in the Ravellenics.

Hello all, hope you are enjoying the sunshine!

I took all 3 DCs into a yarn shop I'd not been in before - I just popped in on the off chance they'd have the right wool and they had not only some DB but also some Sublime, but only in brown (which was a shame as it was in the sale!). Anyway I chose a hopefully 'warm' Confused lilac-purple and while I was dithering over colours the owner very kindly showed my hot and over-tired DCs how you turn freshly shorn wool into actual yarn. They were a bit 'huh?!' but I was very impressed to see a spinning wheel in action.

Plus I told her all about Wooly Hugs and she seemed impressed. (of course!)

My candle flame square is finished, but doesn't really look like Trib's. I got a bit cocky about my yarn overs on the next row and thought I was being really clever by turning them around (telling myself I'd somehow done them wrong Hmm) and so some of the gaps are just stupidly huge as a result, bah. Anyway, here I think.

I'm currently debating the following options:

  1. Try and make the best of it by pulling it a bit here and there from behind and stitching it (not even sure how do-able this is)
  2. Frogging it and trying again
  3. Frogging it and trying another essential, plain square because this is actually meant for Expat's/Giraffe's blanket and is hideously late

It looks better in the photo than in real life actually, but the hole-y bits are seriously uneven, particularly on the top two. Bah.

Somersaults · 11/08/2012 15:01

I think it looks lovely in the photo, a really nice pattern, andi don't think the holes look too big in the picture at all.

tribpot · 11/08/2012 15:09

Minnie, mine doesn't look entirely dissimilar - and you can see in my pic I've stretched it out more with pins. Bear in mind the pattern is not actually meant to be symmetrical - the candle flame curves over to the right by virtue of the k2togs not being done in the centre but on the left hand side of the flame. Plus yarn overs between knit then purl vs. purl then knit will never come out exactly the same, by virtue of the amount of yarn in the yarn over being different.

So all in all, I say: game on. I think it'll be fine. You might ask for special dispensation to block it lightly, perhaps :)

Btw, the Sublime is indeed sublime, it was lovely to work with. Slightly springier than the Rowan.

Send send send, Minnie, it's gorgeoise and will be yoiked into shape by all it's friends Thanks

Somersaults · 11/08/2012 15:52

I love the sublime wool. It's gorgeous and Dd has a lot of baby knits in various shades of the baby sublime.

prettybird · 11/08/2012 16:01

Minniebar - it looks gorgeoise! :)

I've only just finished my squares for expat's, giraffe's and mumto2boys' blankets and didn't get to the post office this morning Blush

PurplePidjin · 11/08/2012 16:05

Bwahahahahah, I'm making a rainbow snake, just finished the head and ask dp what he thought.

"Very nice" he says "So what colour is that going to be, then"

:o

tribpot · 11/08/2012 16:51

Finally ... drum roll please ... the beaded heart is done - it didn't take long, I started it at lunchtime. Just had to wait til I was resigned to not making it to the end of my shawl during the Olympics :)

bird - all credit to you for the lovely yarn, shall I send you what's left back? It's so nice I do think you should get some of the benefit too. Pidj supplied what was the world's smallest crochet hook until I got an even smaller one at my lace knitting course, but it turned out I was meant to string the beads on before I started (which was, surprisingly, not too hard to do). So Pidj I can happily return that to you for crocheting subatomic particles in the future!
