Following on from our previous support thread please check in here if there's any help, particularly (but not exclusively) knitting help, you need for the squares for 3girlies, who sadly lost her beloved 6-year-old dd Flora recently.

The details of the blanket project are here and it directs you to the Crafting Guide on Woolly Hugs, with specific sections for crocheters and knitters. I am still maintaining the original document mostly because I haven't got around to separating out the stuff that's already on Woolly Hugs now from the newer suggestions we've had in the last few weeks. So please, by all means do send me suggestions for new patterns or ideas.

For those of you on Ravelry and participating in the Ravellenic games, I think squares could be entered under a number of categories such as balance beads, doubleknit boxing, lace longjump among possibly some others.

Wow Prettybird! Thank you! That might just be my next project then (once I've got myself a cable needle!)

I've lost my knitting fire a bit while I've been trying to master get to grips with crochet so this might spark me off again.

prettybird · 13/08/2012 17:32

Doesn't even matter too much if you lose count of the rows. Just do a cable row when you think you are on about the 12th row.

As a general rule, "double" the Cable bit seems to create a nice twist. So if you wanted a wider cable, eg 10 stitches wide (C10F or B, ie slip 5 stitches on to the cable needle), you would do the cable row every 20th row.

GlaikitFizzog · 13/08/2012 17:35

Pretty could I use a normal DPN for cabling, or will I have to run the gauntlet of spending go to my local yarn shop for one??

I've finished my four stitch check square from my birthday knitting book onmy new symphony circulars, and have started on a bubble square which looks really cool!

Pretty thanks for the heart fair isle pattern. I had a quick bash at it from the chart, but I got a bit confused and it went back to front!! Confused

I might need a written pattern for a 40 stitch square trib Thanks

prettybird · 13/08/2012 17:47

Glaikit it *did take me 3 attempts to get started Hmm. I'm used to doing Fair-isle/Icelandic in the round, so, for example, my first attempt had me doing the 2nd row still knitting instead of purl. Blush But when once I eventually managed to get to the 3rd row, I was OK.

A longer double pointed needle would be fine - it's just not as convenient. When I lose my little one which is frequently I'm usually about to start using one of the 4mm double-pointed ones when I find it again.

I've got a manic week, must try and get to the wool shop so I can do my square :) I will be the one walking in, clutching a list of appropriate yarns and colours, and simply handing it to the person in the shop while saying, "Do you have any of these, please?"

I'm 99% sure I can make a square where it doesn't suddenly change shape because I missed stitches.

Whoever receives all the squares, I'm sorry if it's a bit rubbish

prettybird · 13/08/2012 17:50

By the way - for the Fair-isle you start in the bottom right corner, then the 2nd row you do from left to right, the 3rd from right to left and so on, if you are knitting on "ordinary" needles.

Apologies if I am teaching you to suck eggs.

PurplePidjin · 13/08/2012 17:57

I think I've got a fairly major input into this one, Lolli so it's in my best interests for you to get it right :)

LollipopViolet · 13/08/2012 18:19

OK purple, I shall write down the number of stitches and rows I need and then make sure I stick to it! :)

I think I've figured out what's going wrong though (as I've done exactly the same thing on practice square 2), I think I'm chaining 2 on the first row, forgetting I've done it, then only chaining one. I'll try square 3 later and see if it is that :)

PurplePidjin · 13/08/2012 18:36

I dunno if it helps, but i find it easier to count stitches by feel than by look especially working rows. They make lumps when you run your fingers along it. If i try and do it by sight i lose track of which I'm on iyswim

GlaikitFizzog · 13/08/2012 20:33

I need help please. I'm doing a bubble pattern from my new book and I have big gaping holes either side of my bubbles but I can't see what I'm doing wrong.

pattern

actual knitting

I can see from the photo in the book there is wee holes at the edge of the bubbles, but my ones are huge! Please help!!

Somersaults · 13/08/2012 20:37

This isn't going to help (sorry) but I actually like the look of yours :)

tribpot · 13/08/2012 20:59

Methinks some creative blocking might have gone on in the picture, Glaikit. I've got the same book so let me give it a quick bash now. I assume you're using 4mm needles?

Btw Frankie Brown has a lovely looking bubble pattern that doesn't seem to involve holes at all - just saying! :)
