Blanket for MrsY and her family. Donors, crocheters and knitters, can you help us?

We have heard the desperately sad news that MrsY has lost her precious baby son Benedict and have offered to make a blanket for her and her family. She is very touched by everyone's kindness, and would love to receive one. Here is the original thread

So once again we are calling on the Blanketeers for help - whether it be donating, knitting or crocheting. Will you join us?

PM me and let me know how you can help, if you need matching up and I will be able to help you

For pictures from previous blankets, see here www.woollyhugs.com

As in the past, the wool we are using is:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (NOT the baby cashmerino)
  • or Rowan cashsoft DK

They are very similar and can be combined

  • 4mm knitting needles or hooks
  • Cast on 33 stitches
  • 6" squares

The colours for this project
Blues, warm purples, greens, silver and cream

So sad that another blanket is needed Sad Sending love to MrsY and her family.

Morning. Quick question, I want to order a couple of balls of blanket wool from t'internet (not for tis blanket, I've already sent my squares). There is one described as 'pink' but looks more lilac. Are there any to avoid?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 06/06/2012 10:38

Chakotay - did you see your squares have arrived safely? All is well. Smile

I would say to avoid lilacs as the reason we always say warm purple is that paler lilacs are tricky to fit with other colours. Also avoid reds, orange and yellow.

Also to help with colours fitting in future blankets, Knotty is going to identify a particular shade cream, as they can be tricky to fit in too. So maybe avoid cream for now.

The core colours are blues, pinks, deeper purples, greens, silvery greys. It is difficult though buying online I know. If you go for any of the core colours you will be fine. And thank you Thanks

I went to the Post Office first thing to collect two parcels and initially they wanted ID with "The Blanket Projects" on. Fortunately my lovely Postie was there and she knows all about us now, so she made him hand them over: smashing Grin

Pistey, as the blankets are only allowed to be in two types of yarn at the moment (for very good reason) there's actually a finite set of colours on the 'okay' list and the 'banned' list. I wonder if we could actually be quite prescriptive about which to choose if in any doubt?

My absolute fave is the silvery grey 'Mist' (505) but hopefully this shade card gives you some ideas, Chakotay. And in the interests of balance, one for Debbie Bliss too.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 06/06/2012 17:47

I love 'mist' too - that's the wool colour Knots used to hook together and edge the Anthony Nolan blanket.

My current favourite is Rowan vamp - a deep purple, although having taken on donor wool this time, it has been really lovely making with someone else's choice.

But to the point, adding more guidance in terms of colours is definitely something to think about, it's not always easy buying online re colours. I tried taking some photos today of squares and the colours don't look right iyswim. So thank you trib, wil def think on. X

No, it's one of the problems I have with using my iPhone for colours, Pistey. They rarely come out true unless the light outside is just right. Which most of the time doesn't really matter (bar the confusion that Dave La Brioche Donkey was blue) but I reckon a cheap-ish digi could probably do better.

The vamp I had never thought about as it looks so close to black on the shade card but this project on Rav shows how lovely it is!

PurplePidjin · 06/06/2012 18:35

I had Vamp donated, it's fab! I'm off on a trian adventure tomorrow and have saved some so i can mix it with some of the pinks i have as leftovers :o (have done two specific squares already)

prettybird · 06/06/2012 18:40

The rich/dark purple Debbie Bliss is also very lovely.Smile

I used the Rowan cream this time is it seemed more "cream" than the supposedly "off" white Debbie Bliss which, to me, was practically pure white.

KnottyLocks · 06/06/2012 18:46

evening all Smile

'Vamp' was the colour that was used to hook and edge Whatevertheweather and Chipmonkey's blankets. It is gorgeous.

I really liked the 'Mist' too: I deliberately chose a completely different shade to previous blankets to give the Nolan blanket a different feel to it.

Re. the prescriptive list, there are certainly colours to avoid Grin but the list would be fairly huge. Will have a think on it, certainly. Might be easier to list colours to avoid!

PurplePidjin · 06/06/2012 19:06

I'm sure Way Back When, i did a list of suggested colours for Rinders's blanket. Anyone fancy rooting around in the archives?

MOSagain · 07/06/2012 18:13

ooh, were we supposed to send bribes/pressies to the woolly co-ordinators to get our squares included? Wink

KnottyLocks · 07/06/2012 18:34

Bribes? Bribes? Shock

GlaikitFizzogKnitterOfTheRealm · 07/06/2012 20:16

Ahem, there aren't any bribes pressies in with my squares this time because there is no chocolate in the house AT ALL. How did that happen??? Confused I could have sent a bottle of Asti, but it wouldn't fit in the envelope!

tribpot · 07/06/2012 20:31

I didn't even put my name in with my squares! Bribes! That'll be the day! Wink

prettybird · 07/06/2012 20:58

They're not bribes, they're tokens of appreciation for all the hard work the hookers and their minder have been doing/are embarking upon Grin

if tribpot and Glaikit ask nicely I might send them some from my next batch 'cos I know they appreciate tablet unlike some Sassenachs who make disparaging comments about the Scots' sweet tooth

Whenisitmysleepytime · 07/06/2012 21:14

So pleased my simple squares arrived! Grin
Knotty -thank you for finishing of my baby square! Wine

It looks like these blankets will be super big and super snuggly!

Sorry for the lack of treats pistey I ate them Blush it was a mad week! :)

AllMuddledUp · 07/06/2012 21:20

I'm intrigued by these tablets, what are they?

I have just wrapped up my squares ready to post tomorrow, I had to laugh as of course I forgot to put the note in, so had to add another layer of brown paper, it'll be like opening a pass the parcel!

No bribes in there I'm afraid Sad though you all deserve many lovely things for your hard work I am just a bit impoverished at the moment (thanks DH and DDad for having birthdays within 2 days of each other and one of them on Father's day too!)

tribpot · 07/06/2012 21:20

I'm sure 'token of appreciation' is just another term for bribe, bird Wink
