A Blanket for Greengoose: sign up thread for knitters, crocheters and donors.

We heard yesterday the very sad news that Greengoose's beautiful baby daughter, Merryn passed away. Greengoose's thread can be found here

We have offered to make a blanket for the family. We hope that it may give whatever comfort it can to them all.

So, we need knitters, crocheters and donors. If you would like to donate wool, then we can match you up with a crafter.

RatherBeOnThePiste will coordinate and match crafters and donors, and deal with the admin side. I'll try to answer any queries you may have and will put together the blanket.

If you would like to be involved in any way, please post on this thread and PM Pistey with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, and she will match you up.
If you are offering to donate, we would be grateful if you would let us know if you'd like to donate 1 or 2 balls of wool. They cost roughly £5 per ball plus P&P.

Crafters, if you need wool, please let Pistey know if you'd like 1 or 2 balls of wool.
One ball should make at least 2 x 6" squares.

The wool we are using is:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (NOT the baby cashmerino)

  • or Rowan Cashsoft DK.

They are very similar and can be combined.

  • 4mm knitting needles or hooks

  • knitters cast on 33 stitches (this is a guide for less experienced knitters)

  • 6" squares

The Colours:

Blues, warm purples, pinks, greens, silvers and cream

Ideas for squares:

Birds have a symbolic meaning to the family so if you could incorporate any bird design that would be lovely.

Please don't feel daunted by this as we really love plain squares and simple textures too. They look as stunning as the more complex squares and actually play a vital role in the overall effect.

Previous blankets can be seen on the WoollyHugs website. We also have a Facebook page: MNWoollyHugs.

As always, thank you so much for your support.

Thanks

Having a bonkersly busy day. Tis DS's birthday and it is a bit full on. I am replying to PMs but on my phone so apologies for errors due to my enormous sausage fingers. Smile

Thumbwitch · 02/06/2012 14:13

Oh I missed this one. And the sadness about Greengoose's DD until I saw another thread in Bereavement yesterday from another MNer whose prem DS has just died as well, and she posted on that thread.

So :(.

Well done to all of you again - so sorry that I didn't find out in time to help out this time but next time (sadly it's bound to be necessary) I'll be here.
Crowns and Thankss all round.

Another one who didn't make the post, I'm sorry. I just can't seem to finish two squares in the time limit Blush. Maybe I should have posted the finished one, but I promise the second one won't be long.

JulesJules - did you see my post earlier (not sure if it was on this thread or the other one) warning you that some of the patterns from that lovely big fat knitting book are wrong perhaps not edited as well as they could have been.

If you PM me, I can tell you the ones I've had problems with so far (and wic ones worked well!) (3 out of the 9 squares that I produced using new techniques/new patterns from the book here had some problems - in particular the blue one with the wee holes in it, which tribpot ended up helping me with)

Having said that, it's a good book for describing basic techniques.

JulesJules · 02/06/2012 20:37

Oh I did prettybird and thanks for the warning. I am a fairly basic knitter, so have only attempted easy squares so far, the honeycomb one worked well.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 03/06/2012 09:09

Tis Ok Cider, you are not the only one by a long way, Wednesday is fine Smile

Practicallyperfectnot · 03/06/2012 11:08

Could the royal mail help and deliver the parcels like they do for businesses etc? Not sure what I am talking about really - how about a large red zip up sack delivered at a time to suit you?

Another fundraising idea - is there a wool association?! Or a sheep farmers association?! Or a national knitters club? Or one of those knitting magazines but I guess they would want an article.

Practicallyperfectnot · 03/06/2012 11:43

There's a hand knitters assn and all sorts on google!!

alibubbles · 04/06/2012 11:08

Photo on profile of my square, I'm afraid they are only garter stitch, but I didn't have the time and concentration to do patterned ones this time - (post concussion illness = foggy head, don't ask!) but I know that plain squares are needed, so I have called them "joiner" square!

On their way to Pistey, but may have missed the last post on Saturday.

KnottyLocks · 04/06/2012 15:53

Ali, simple squares are smashing Smile

There are some little birdies I'm making that will sit very happily on your squares.

Hope the head clears very soon. x

Piste Glad it got there ok.

I think I might buy some more wool and knit some now just in case there is ever another blanket. Whenever I try RL things like chicken pox and a baby get in the way Grin

RatherBeOnThePiste · 06/06/2012 13:31

I went to the Post Office first thing to collect two parcels and initially they wanted ID with "The Blanket Projects" on. Fortunately my lovely Postie was there and she knows all about us now, so she made him hand them over: smashing Grin
