We have just heard the tragic and devastating news that MrsKwazii's daughter has passed away today in an accident. She was 4 Sad

We would like to make a blanket for MrsKwazii's family, to offer them what comfort we can.
If you would like to contribute in any way, please sign up below and PM RatherbeOnThePiste with your offer: crafting, donating, need wool, don't need wool, etc. She'll match you up.

We need knitters, crocheters and donors. If you would like to donate wool, then we can match you up with a crafter.

If you are offering to donate, we would be grateful if you would let us know if you'd like to donate 1 or 2 balls of wool. They cost roughly £5 per ball.

Crafters, if you need wool please let Pistey know if you'd like 1 or 2 balls of wool.
One ball should make at least 2 x 6" squares.

The wool we are using is:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (NOT the baby cashmerino)

  • or Rowan Cashsoft DK.

They are very similar and can be combined.

  • 4mm knitting needles or hooks

  • cast on 33 stitches (this is a guide for less experienced knitters)

  • 6" squares

The Colours:

Blues, warm purples, greens, silver/ greys and pinks.

Molehill There are a couple of sewing shops here, which also sell wool and no doubt knitting needles too, but apart from the fact that I find the sales assistants there a little intimidating sometimes, my German knitting terminology is non-existent. So I shall see how I get on with YouTube etc. first (which I hadn't consulted before I tried to cast on).

Squid Simple is good! The Dummies website only showed something called the two-strand method for casting on, which I'm sure wasn't what I used to use, so I'll have to investigate YouTube. Smile

"Knotty bits, lumpy edges etc won't matter."

Hurrah - I may hold you to that KnottyLocks. I only started knitting on 10 January ...

tribpot · 27/02/2012 20:38

Video for one of the easiest cast ons - . Very easy to follow.

KnottyLocks · 27/02/2012 20:39

RedRosie, you may Smile

And good on you with your knitting. You Star

Have just replied to all this evening's PMs, thank you everyone Thanks

Come on LinzerTorte - you can do this! YouTube is your friend Grin

I do what has been said for adding in a new colour, it works, I 'm not sure if it is right or not. Then you have to sort of wind it up the sides as you go if you do stripes like me which makes the edge on one side look a bit unusual, but as Knotty says it all disappears into the seam. I'll go and find the link to the photo album and maybe you will see what the joins look like?!

Hang on.....

RatherBeOnThePiste · 27/02/2012 20:50

Photos are here and as you will see, I've written

There's nowt wrong with wonky
I wrote that 3 months ago, so it must be true!

Ooh-knitting instruction in German! I second the you tube suggestion, Linzer Smile

AllTheSevens · 27/02/2012 21:05

So sorry to hear this sad news. Thinking of MrsK and Wubbly's family too. Sad

I would love to knit some squares for the blankets- I might be able to get my own wool. Would a plain stitch but stripey design be okay? And I can also do a diamondy pattern if that's any good?

I'm no expert though so may not be perfect!

Tried to message Piste but it wouldn't let me Confused

Pancakeflipper · 27/02/2012 21:11

If there are any donations going free - I can knit some squares. Cannot do fancy stuff but thankfully there's an entire gang of you who are good at that.

I cannot PM Piste either.....Are you full up ?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 27/02/2012 21:12
Shock

Am I full up? Can one be full up?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 27/02/2012 21:13

Shock Knotty we HAVE to get folders sorted!!! Really now!

I'm coming for you then, All and Pancake, hang on

RatherBeOnThePiste · 27/02/2012 21:16

Arse... I shall have to go and start emptying out my PM box! I didn't know one could be full Shock

Pancakeflipper · 27/02/2012 21:19

It let me send you a message this time. Sent you my address Piste - lots of luck with your s/sheets!

AllTheSevens · 27/02/2012 21:29

Weird though and slightly worrying. I didn't know you could get to capacity, if that is what that was? Blimey.

Knotty has been asking MNHQ to sort out the PM system for what feels like ages. I appreciate maybe we use it way more than it was originally intended for but on a project like this what we really would like is a search facility for PMs and a folders type storage method. At the moment PMs just pile up chronologically and are so unmanageable. I am always so worried about missing something or losing something. Over the first Wednesday I had 98 PMs. If people are so lovely to volunteer you don't want to lose them or miss them. How sad would that be?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 27/02/2012 21:35

I'm going to start at the bottom and delete masses. I will keep all blanket PMs though and hopefully we can get this sorted. Knotty we really need to sort this.

PurplePidjin · 27/02/2012 21:35

Blimey, I've never deleted a pm on here. Thought mailbox capacity was pretty close to unlimited!

I shall ask MNHQ :)

funchum8am · 27/02/2012 21:40

Hi can I join in? tribpot has sent me the link on another knitting thread. I am a relative beginner but think I can knit you some squares. I will buy my own wool. PMing you now ratherbeonthepiste.

KnottyLocks · 27/02/2012 21:53

MNHQ,

we need your help! And quickly!

Pistey and I are getting squillions of PMs every day.

What's the capacity for our inboxes?

Obviously we don't want to delete PMs with blanket info on but can't stick them in folders either.

Pistey is having to delete some in order to receive some.

And, it appears some of her first PMs from the start of the blanket projects have disappeared.

I'm off to check mine.

OliviaMumsnet · 27/02/2012 22:00

Crikey
That's not good
I will check with tech about capcaity for inboxes (no one ever pms me Sad)
And see how we can help.

KnottyLocks · 27/02/2012 22:06

I've just sorted that for you, Olivia. Wink

Now, all you have to do is sort our side out Smile

Thanks
OP posts:
RatherBeOnThePiste · 27/02/2012 22:09

Please - these are my concerns

Can you reach capacity on PMs? Do they fall off the other end if you reach capacity or do you stop being able to accept any?

I'm deleting old ones like mad! But I am so worried I have missed people, they think they have PMd me and in fact it hasn't come through. As I delete I seem to be getting lots arriving. Coincidence? I don't know.

PLease we need folders! We need to be able to sort and file and free up the inbox

We really need to be able to search. It is impossible to use the system as it is.

I appreciate maybe we use it way more than it was originally intended for on a project like this

We are trying so hard here!!
Please help us!!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 27/02/2012 22:10

PMd you as well Olivia - now you have two in your inbox! Grin

KnottyLocks · 27/02/2012 22:13

Olivia, for pity's sake don't reply via PM!
