We have just heard the tragic and devastating news that MrsKwazii's daughter has passed away today in an accident. She was 4 Sad

We would like to make a blanket for MrsKwazii's family, to offer them what comfort we can.
If you would like to contribute in any way, please sign up below and PM RatherbeOnThePiste with your offer: crafting, donating, need wool, don't need wool, etc. She'll match you up.

We need knitters, crocheters and donors. If you would like to donate wool, then we can match you up with a crafter.

If you are offering to donate, we would be grateful if you would let us know if you'd like to donate 1 or 2 balls of wool. They cost roughly £5 per ball.

Crafters, if you need wool please let Pistey know if you'd like 1 or 2 balls of wool.
One ball should make at least 2 x 6" squares.

The wool we are using is:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (NOT the baby cashmerino)

  • or Rowan Cashsoft DK.

They are very similar and can be combined.

  • 4mm knitting needles or hooks

  • cast on 33 stitches (this is a guide for less experienced knitters)

  • 6" squares

The Colours:

Blues, warm purples, greens, silver/ greys and pinks.

I managed to buy my wool at the weekend so will start my squares this week.

FruitShootsAndHeaves · 05/03/2012 16:09

knitters can i ask approx how many rows you are knitting to get the 6"?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 05/03/2012 16:24

FruitShoots - I am on 48 rows and I am at 4 inches, I reckon 24 more rows will do it. I am dong stripes of 4 rows per stripe, which is how I can see.

So I reckon I'll be doing 72, but that sounds an awful lot Confused By heck! Wait for someone who actually knows way they are talking about maybe?!

Lovely to see more wool arriving today, will do a round up of thank yous to donors this evening. But that is brilliant.

Just going through PMs Thanks everyone...

FruitShootsAndHeaves · 05/03/2012 16:45

ok thanks Piste. After doing two I've realised that 33 stitches by 33 rows isn't square! Grin

GleamingHeels · 05/03/2012 17:06

I don't know if this helps any - I am knitting on 3 and three quarter needles and 35 stitches by 42 rows has come out about right on my test squares - will find out if this is still true now that I have got my lovely wool

RatherBeOnThePiste · 05/03/2012 17:09

Why am I doing 72 then???? I've gone wrong somewhere haven't i?

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 05/03/2012 17:13

Mine looks a lot longer than 6" and I have cast on 33 stitches and am using size 4 needles.

tribpot · 05/03/2012 17:13

What size needles are you using, Pistey?

It could be that your tension is very tight but 72 does sound quite a lot ...

FruitShootsAndHeaves · 05/03/2012 17:19

No I reckon I will have done about 72 before I get to 6"

GleamingHeels · 05/03/2012 17:25

Maybe the selected yarn for this project knits up smaller than that I have been using to try things out - can someone who has successfully completed a 6' square give an approximation of the number of rows it took them (though of course measuring is the only way for individuals)

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere do you mean that your is coming out wider with 33 stitches

RatherBeOnThePiste · 05/03/2012 17:40

Size 4 needles

I only have to cast on about 29 to get to 6 inches wide. Does that mean I'm tight?

I am going to try to add a pic so you will see what I mean, it will be 72 rows I think

Tis exactly 6" wide though Grin

GleamingHeels · 05/03/2012 17:43

29 stitches makes you a little bit loose Grin, my money's still on this wool kniting 'small' if two people need 72 rows to get to 6 inches

RatherBeOnThePiste · 05/03/2012 17:48

Tis on my informative profile - work in progress Grin

GleamingHeels · 05/03/2012 17:58

It looks beautiful Pistey lovely colours - it is a teeny tiny picture, but if seventy-two is what it takes then I am revising my plan for my square as I don't want to waste any of my wool.

I am very impressed with your industriousness given all the organising that you're doing too Thanks No wonder your profile is a bit erm

FruitShootsAndHeaves · 05/03/2012 18:01

I've tried so hard to stretch to 6" but I'm just too short Grin

GleamingHeels · 05/03/2012 18:05

Face/palm Blush will write inches in future

Somebody asked earlier about whether it was acceptable to use a small amount of a different kind of wool for little details.. I do understand that having the same washability and 'feel' is important and will happily knit a textured plain coloured square or two with lovely wool that has been donated to me, but would quite like to add a little detail from yarn that I already have.

If this has already been answered and I have missed it, I apologise

RatherBeOnThePiste · 05/03/2012 18:24

Slightly bigger pic now of my Emergent Square, It will be 72 rows Confused

MrsDV - I only have to do 29 stitches to get to 6 inches. 33 on size 4 needles would be more like 7 inches for me.

Technical talk tonight

GleamingHeels · 05/03/2012 18:26

Pistey can't comment on how 'tight' you are, but that's lovely neat even knitting

tribpot · 05/03/2012 18:38

Pistey, US size 4 needles are 3.5mm rather than 4mm (4mm is the usual for DK), which may explain it. UK size 4 needles are apparently 6mm but that means you'd be doing way less than 72 rows to get to 6".

funchum8am · 05/03/2012 18:41

Received my donated yarn today, casting on now! Thanks for organising and thanks to my donor (lovely dark bluey/grey RY Cashsoft DK)!

by knitting needle sizing! Help!!!!
They say 4mm on the end of the needles.
How would I know if they are UK or American?!
Or is it just OK - Knottyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!

Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused

tribpot · 05/03/2012 18:54

Okay - panic not! 4mm is not size 4 (iit's size 6 US, size 8 UK). In case you thought the entire physical fabric of the universe was tearing, 4mm is 4mm in the US and the UK Grin

I'm on about 44 rows to do 6" and that's on 3.25mm needless, such is the looseness of my character knitting.

GleamingHeels · 05/03/2012 18:55

Pistey I am confused too, but you are totally OK - you have a perfect 6 inch width, all you have to do is make it to 72 rows

Someone somewhere, like Knotty, may eventually be able to explain this and advise others, but you shouldn't worry one bit
