We have just heard the tragic and devastating news that MrsKwazii's daughter has passed away today in an accident. She was 4 Sad

We would like to make a blanket for MrsKwazii's family, to offer them what comfort we can.
If you would like to contribute in any way, please sign up below and PM RatherbeOnThePiste with your offer: crafting, donating, need wool, don't need wool, etc. She'll match you up.

We need knitters, crocheters and donors. If you would like to donate wool, then we can match you up with a crafter.

If you are offering to donate, we would be grateful if you would let us know if you'd like to donate 1 or 2 balls of wool. They cost roughly £5 per ball.

Crafters, if you need wool please let Pistey know if you'd like 1 or 2 balls of wool.
One ball should make at least 2 x 6" squares.

The wool we are using is:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (NOT the baby cashmerino)

  • or Rowan Cashsoft DK.

They are very similar and can be combined.

  • 4mm knitting needles or hooks

  • cast on 33 stitches (this is a guide for less experienced knitters)

  • 6" squares

The Colours:

Blues, warm purples, greens, silver/ greys and pinks.

Morning Smile

I'm more than happy for my extras to be used on future projects - for each ball of wool I've been doing one 'theme' square for want of a better word (hopefully tyeing in with the things that are meaningful to the families) and one 'pattern' square that could be used for anything, colours allowing!

Random fact - knitting apparently burns approx 100 calories an hour. About the same as a glass of wine?

chipping I got it from eBay, she has lot of different shades, she posted it the day I paid for it, it's an eBay shop, when I get to my computer I'll link to her Smile

Morning everyone - my first square that came out roughly the right size is on my photos page - I hope it's okay that I used a bit of non-standard yarn for the contrast colour? They look quite nice together but it's not the combination I would have chosen for the lovely elephant pattern, just something I had in. Ds loves the pattern and wants it combining with the 'ducky' jumper he wants me to knit him, hey ho.

KnottyLocks · 04/03/2012 08:18

Tribpot, that is gorgeous. Smile Clever thing. Star

Awesome, trib Thanks

tribpot · 04/03/2012 08:55

Oh phew, I thought I might be sent to the back of the class for unapproved use of yarnage Wink I might do it again in my two colours, which are grey and blue.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 04/03/2012 09:27

Hooray.... PM system seems to be working fine

For now Grin

Lovely square trib!

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 04/03/2012 09:32

Morning all :)

Minnie - brilliant random fact, so I can knit and drink a glass of wine and burn 200 calories an hour - RESULT for sure Grin

Hoops - great :) Look forward to the link! It's good to know that she sent it so quickly.

Tripot - great square, love the Ele's!! Ducks & Elephants - why not?? LOL
Blue background and Grey Ele's would look good. You could also do it in one colour with an opposite purl/knit

duchesse · 04/03/2012 09:59

trib, that square is LOVELY! I might have to make a jumper for DD in that pattern now, using exactly that type of yarn. Did you say the pattern is on Ravelry?

JulesJules · 04/03/2012 10:17

Oooh slightly misread post higher up and thought we were being referred to as Gleaming Blanketeers

I love that Grin

Thanks duchesse! (And everyone). I originally came across the idea from this gorgeous little tank top on Ravelry, which was inspired by this one. But reading (aka having Google translate) the designer's blog gave no clue as to where the pattern for the elephants came from, as it's not part of the original Milo design. She has knitted it into a jumper, though - pic here.

So I googled for elephant knitting pattern and came to this site and used that for my pattern - the elephant to the left of the pattern is bigger than the others but I just went for three small ones with a couple of seed stitches on the outside to make a border. The most interesting thing for me was learning how to carry the yarn at the back of the work - I'm very sure the more experienced knitters could have done better than this :) (Also here is a bigger image of the square).

I put the pattern into a spreadsheet with a note to myself about which end each row started, if you see what I mean! The instructions are for knitting it in the round so it's assumed every row in knit. To do it flat every other row needs to be purled of course. The spreaddie is here.

tribpot · 04/03/2012 10:34

I should say as well the elephants have made it on to the insanely gorgeous Kate Davies paperdolls pattern as well. Scroll down for an example of one of the last customisations - and then have a lie down at the idea of anyone attempting any of Kate's beautiful designs.

Whenisitmysleepytime · 04/03/2012 11:34

Tribpot - you have made me very determined to learn how to do fair isle knitting now. And very Confused at how much thought those must take!
Your elephants are lovely tho! They remind me of the pink elephants in dumbo! Grin

RatherBeOnThePiste · 04/03/2012 12:43

So many gorgeoise squares, fabulous. Everyone is doing so well Thanks

My news is, I am over half way on my first square!! Cue the confetti! Grin

All PMs replied to. Thanks

GlaikitFizzog · 04/03/2012 13:07

Thank you DonkeyTeapot that link is good, however my hamfistedness resutled in a bigger mess than was there to start with, so I've started again! I may be sometime finishing a flawless square :o. If I get one before the deadline I'll send it off.

SoupDragon · 04/03/2012 14:27

Square 1
Square 2 (and I've sewn that pesky end in now Wink
Square 3
Square 4

I am also cobbling together a granny square from the last remnants :)

And then I"m done.

With weeks to spare.

tribpot · 04/03/2012 14:29

Soupy, I need a lie down after looking at those! Have you slept at all recently?

SoupDragon · 04/03/2012 14:31

I napped on the sofa all afternoon yesterday. It was lovely :o

TimeForCake · 04/03/2012 14:50

They're fab Soupy. Love your signature bear especially. Your donor chose lovely colours too.

My square on the other hand is going very very slowly. Lack of practise since the last blanket & it really shows. Confused

GleamingHeels · 04/03/2012 14:58

Love all the squares so far they're fabulous, fingers crossed the postie will have a little package for me tomorrow and I can stop over thinking planning and get going Smile
