We have just heard the tragic and devastating news that MrsKwazii's daughter has passed away today in an accident. She was 4 Sad

We would like to make a blanket for MrsKwazii's family, to offer them what comfort we can.
If you would like to contribute in any way, please sign up below and PM RatherbeOnThePiste with your offer: crafting, donating, need wool, don't need wool, etc. She'll match you up.

We need knitters, crocheters and donors. If you would like to donate wool, then we can match you up with a crafter.

If you are offering to donate, we would be grateful if you would let us know if you'd like to donate 1 or 2 balls of wool. They cost roughly £5 per ball.

Crafters, if you need wool please let Pistey know if you'd like 1 or 2 balls of wool.
One ball should make at least 2 x 6" squares.

The wool we are using is:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (NOT the baby cashmerino)

  • or Rowan Cashsoft DK.

They are very similar and can be combined.

  • 4mm knitting needles or hooks

  • cast on 33 stitches (this is a guide for less experienced knitters)

  • 6" squares

The Colours:

Blues, warm purples, greens, silver/ greys and pinks.

My kindly donated wool arrived today!
Thanks to whoever donated it!
I have a dusky green colour and almost white.

Just beginning my first square now :)

LinzerTorte · 01/03/2012 21:25

I'm sure you're right, Knotty and Pistey. Actually, the basic knitting has come back even if it doesn't look like it from this afternoon's efforts but anything more than that is beyond me. I can't even remember how to purl.

KnottyLocks · 01/03/2012 21:28

Linzer, no need to purl Pistey doesn't

'Simple are squares are good.'

Repeat mantra.

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 01/03/2012 21:29

Pistey - Kids! Bed! Now! ... Done Grin x

PoohBearsHole - just don't wash it or iron it or steam it or anything At. All. and you will be fine :)

tribpot · 01/03/2012 21:30

Purl - but if you fancy something with a different texture that doesn't involve purling, how about Chinese waves?

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 01/03/2012 21:34

Linzer - google is your mate (alongside youtube) Grin

Pistey - it concerns me that you can't purl and seem to think it's quite complicated - watch this . I did try to type it out but that really wasn't good Grin

KnottyLocks · 01/03/2012 21:35

We are going to need some simple squares to stitch the Twitter birds onto.

Therefore, not only is it 'Simple squares are good'

it's also,

'Simple squares are essential'

That Chinese wave pattern sounds interesting, tribpot.

Awwww Im going to have to start again - my 4mm needles with 33 stitches (I have knitted 4 rows) is well over 6 1/2 inches!!

Im not used to 4mm needles!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/03/2012 21:39

One is in bed, but poor DD is still doing homework, I've just made her a cup of tea, she's not going to be finishing just yet Sad

Knotty's lovely Twitter bird is on my profile

Molehillmountain · 01/03/2012 21:50

I have just confessed to dh what I'm knitting and he thinks it's lovely. I am fifteen rows into a valentine hearts pattern and although it's hardly algebra - just counting plain and purl its exercising my brain nicely. Smile. Realise most of my recent knitting has been chunky so growth rate less pleasing!

TimeForCake · 01/03/2012 21:51

I love the twitter bird! It looks so good Knotty.
Am also a big fan of your 'simple squares are essential' mantra. It's just as well too

LinzerTorte · 01/03/2012 21:51

Ah well, in that case I shall stick to a simple knitted square Knotty - desperate as I am to show off all my fancy stitches that I'll suddenly remember as soon as my wool arrives. Grin

Chipping Yes, I did google and found a couple of useful looking sites (and YouTube was invaluable for reminding me how to cast on - after I'd found a video that didn't involve someone casting on with just one needle and their fingers Confused).

trib Ah yes, purling has come back to me now too! I could only remember that it was the opposite of the knit stitch, but couldn't remember exactly how. I feel like the world is my oyster now. Grin

Poor DD, Pistey; hope she doesn't have to stay up too late.

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 01/03/2012 21:52

When I have learnt to crochet - I want to make this little fella

DutchOma · 01/03/2012 21:56

I'll do you a couple of plain squares to sew twitter birds on, they're just darling.
I've just ordered some more Debbie Bliss, hopefully it will come soon, but definitely before the 19th/26 March

PurpleSquid · 01/03/2012 22:00

ChippingInNeedsCoffee I love that! I have a thing about knitted/crocheted animals. If I could actually knit to any standard, or crochet at all, I'd probably be knee deep in knitted snails and crocheted frogs.

tribpot · 01/03/2012 22:01

Linzer - you're cooking with gas now!

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 01/03/2012 22:21

Cake - I'd like to suggest that when you do work it out, you write it down! :) not that I have to work it out for myself again, no

Pistey - poor DD. Homework officially sucks! Knotty's lovely Twitter bird is very cute :)

Molehill - amazing how little it takes isn't it Wink

Grin

LinzerTorte - a while ago I needed to do something (knitting wise) I hadn't done before - there is only one demo on youtube (well, that I could find anyway) It's a bloody complicated way of adding in a stitch, the girl does it so quickly, it took me two whole evenings to work out what the hell I had to do, with lots of stopping and starting the video - it was like a sodding cats cradle!! Both needles and wool wound around some fingers of one hand and then ducking and diving with the needle....I am sure it can't have been necessary??!!

DutchOma - I wish I had ordered it online! I'm sure it will come quickly :)

PurpleSquid I love that! I have a thing about knitted/crocheted animals. If I could actually knit to any standard, or crochet at all, I'd probably be knee deep in knitted snails and crocheted frogs.... errr perhaphs just as well then!! Grin If I acquire the skill to do it, I'll make you a matching one :) or you can choose your own colours.

PippiL · 01/03/2012 22:24

Aargh. I've finished my 'square' but it is too big.

See pic.

Will you be able to fit it in?

PurpleSquid · 01/03/2012 22:24

Woohoo! I'll hold you to that! Wink

KnottyLocks · 01/03/2012 22:39

Pippi,

Although that is in fact a woolly quadrilateral not square of a slightly larger size than the strict specifications...

I will make it fit.

It's very lovely by the way Star

OP posts:
ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 01/03/2012 22:43

Pippi - I can't see it very well on my screen (what colour is it - number), is it the footprints pattern? If it is I think you might have duplicated a couple of rows as it looks quite long? Knotty is a genius - it will fit just fine and look lovely :)

Purple - feel free to nudge me from time to time!! But not too soon - I've never done any crochet and I need to knit these squares first!!

hoops997 · 01/03/2012 22:51

wool has arrived, it's know winging it's way to a lovely mumsknitter :)

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/03/2012 23:10

smashing hoops - thank you!!

"Simple squares are essential" Well you can rely on me for those....

Woolly quadrilaterals?

Purling?

Knitted snails and crocheted frogs?

Knotty in a slanket ?

Definitely, definitely bedtime!

PippiL · 01/03/2012 23:12

Yes it's the footprints one. I followed pattern, even using my row counter app so don't think I duplicated any rows. Also omitted the last 4 plain rows at the top because by then I could see it was going to be long.

CakeMixture · 01/03/2012 23:27

Well after three attempts at a 6inch width Im now going for 32 stitches (having previously decided 33 was too many!)

It all depends on how much you stretch it!
Happy Knitting :)
