We have just heard the tragic and devastating news that MrsKwazii's daughter has passed away today in an accident. She was 4 Sad

We would like to make a blanket for MrsKwazii's family, to offer them what comfort we can.
If you would like to contribute in any way, please sign up below and PM RatherbeOnThePiste with your offer: crafting, donating, need wool, don't need wool, etc. She'll match you up.

We need knitters, crocheters and donors. If you would like to donate wool, then we can match you up with a crafter.

If you are offering to donate, we would be grateful if you would let us know if you'd like to donate 1 or 2 balls of wool. They cost roughly £5 per ball.

Crafters, if you need wool please let Pistey know if you'd like 1 or 2 balls of wool.
One ball should make at least 2 x 6" squares.

The wool we are using is:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (NOT the baby cashmerino)

  • or Rowan Cashsoft DK.

They are very similar and can be combined.

  • 4mm knitting needles or hooks

  • cast on 33 stitches (this is a guide for less experienced knitters)

  • 6" squares

The Colours:

Blues, warm purples, greens, silver/ greys and pinks.

The first one I did (this time last year) was 5'x5'. Then I did two at 6'x4' just because I met another MNer and ended up with a few rows of 12 squares! Then I used the remaining squares to make a 4'x4' one to raise money by raffle, which Knotty is organizing. Then I made one of the ones for Magic's daughters, were they 4'6"x4'6" in the end, Knots?

Then I changed jobs (working in residential care, I could crochet while chatting to residents) and had to pass the baton over to wonderful Knotty. If she gets overwhelmed, or wants my patented heart edging on these blankets, I shall have it back :)

PippiL · 01/03/2012 19:23

Those blankets are so beautiful. Made me shed a little tear. I'm proud to be able to help out, and grateful to my donor for their choice of wool colour.

Do we know the name of mrskwazii's daughter? I'm thinking of initials.

KnottyLocks · 01/03/2012 19:29

Pippi, we have some initial squares being made.
We do not know if we can post the info re initials on the thread so haven't done so. We don't want to bother the family more than necessary at the moment.

PippiL · 01/03/2012 19:44

No probs. initials may be beyond me anyway. Glad to hear someone is on the case cos the initial squares in those blanket pics do look smashing :)

TimeForCake · 01/03/2012 19:44

Came home this evening to find my wool at last! All is well. Looking forward to getting started or at least kidding myself that I can remember what I'm doing with a crochet hook

Time for Wine first and a catch up on the threads.

KnottyLocks · 01/03/2012 19:46

Um yes, Soupy's parcel. Or rather the addressing of said parcel...

Wine time indeed Grin

I'm not sure I can come up with anything to top the last one :(

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/03/2012 19:50

DH left the country.....

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/03/2012 19:50

He's not been seen since........

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 01/03/2012 20:11

Whatevertheweather - I missed your post last night. It's lovely to know you are using your blanket and getting lots of MN hugs x

Can anyone link to a photo of the twitter birds that I can see without being on FB?

Pippi/Soup - are you telling me I NEED a phone that does Apps and an Ipad?? Grin

PurpleSquid - what wool are you using and what needles are you using?

Pidj - I love the way the ones you have linked to are hooked/sewn up so that the squares are next to each other without being able to see the hooking/sewing (hope that makes sense!!).

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 01/03/2012 20:14

Pistey - are you enjoying the peace? Grin

LinzerTorte · 01/03/2012 20:16

My DH has left the country too. He'll be amazed to come back and find me knitting. Hmm

I really hope my wool arrives tomorrow so that I can make a start over the weekend. I'm itching to get going, but have had to content myself with teaching DD2 to knit. We both have the knitting bug now. If only we had the skills to match.

PurpleSquid · 01/03/2012 20:20

ChippingInNeedsCoffee Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK, 4mm needles.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/03/2012 20:22

Linzer, your knitting is lovely, I'm proud of you!

Chipping - I'll try to think of a way.....

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/03/2012 20:23

More woolly wool has reached our ace crafters from our generous, efficient and lovely donors. Thank you so much!

Thanks kayzr

Thanks NinthWave

Thanks fledtoscotland

Thanks FreudianSlipper

and for your donation to funds, Thanks fivegomadindorset

PurplePidjin · 01/03/2012 20:31

You can see the stitches up close, Chipping, but sheer ignorance made me put my crochet on the back. In the real world, the crochet goes on the front like wot Knotty did Blush

www.crochetme.com/media/p/94823.aspx

I found a snowflake pattern, it looks like it comes up at 2.5" in DK on a 3mil hook. I can probably do it on a 2.5mil with the naice wool we're using, bug tested on crappy acrylic just to see.

Shall I make some as embellishments?

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 01/03/2012 20:51

Pidj - they're perfect!! Lovely :)

Oh well, it might be 'the wrong way' but I prefer it (sorry knotty - no offence!!). I just like that the squares nestle next to each other without a border colour.

PurpleSquid Well you are using the right wool, the right needles... you must just be a loosey goosey Grin

KnottyLocks · 01/03/2012 20:52

Love the pattern, Pidj.
Just thinking it may be a bit of a cow to sew on though.
To keep it flat it would mean stitching each of the 6 points and then the 6 points of the inner hexagon.

You are far too kind and untruthful Pistey, but I'm practising hard so that I can make a square that doesn't look dreadful out of place in the blanket, even if it will be very plain and unfancy. I used to be able to knit little holes for boottee ribbons to go through rather than unintentional holes. Blush And patterns and stripes and all sorts. But it's all gone.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/03/2012 20:56

Finally.......

Knotty's crocheted Twitter bird for the Blanket for MrsKwazii is on my profile

That didn't take long at all......

KnottyLocks · 01/03/2012 20:57

Linzer, it'll all come flooding back. Really will Smile

And if it's any consolation, my DH's face was like this Hmm when I started to knitting again...and like this Shock when I took a crochet book, hooks and wool on holiday to teach myself. I think he thought I'd be in a hairnet and dropping me teeth in a glass at bedtime next.

His own fault for buying me a slanket the previous Christmas

OP posts:
PurplePidjin · 01/03/2012 20:58

I'll see if I can find one that's worked into the square then :)

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/03/2012 20:59

Squid - there's nothing wrong with being loose.....
Linzer - like riding a bike, so they say....

Right sorting out my DC into bed...

PoohBearsHole · 01/03/2012 21:14

What the hell is blocking off?

Attempted Moss stitch, yeah might have started it 6 times and then given up Grin

PurplePidjin · 01/03/2012 21:16

Free crochet lessons from 11:30 tomorrow at the Global Cafe in Reading - come and find the Mumsnet table Grin
