We have just heard the tragic and devastating news that MrsKwazii's daughter has passed away today in an accident. She was 4 Sad

We would like to make a blanket for MrsKwazii's family, to offer them what comfort we can.
If you would like to contribute in any way, please sign up below and PM RatherbeOnThePiste with your offer: crafting, donating, need wool, don't need wool, etc. She'll match you up.

We need knitters, crocheters and donors. If you would like to donate wool, then we can match you up with a crafter.

If you are offering to donate, we would be grateful if you would let us know if you'd like to donate 1 or 2 balls of wool. They cost roughly £5 per ball.

Crafters, if you need wool please let Pistey know if you'd like 1 or 2 balls of wool.
One ball should make at least 2 x 6" squares.

The wool we are using is:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (NOT the baby cashmerino)

  • or Rowan Cashsoft DK.

They are very similar and can be combined.

  • 4mm knitting needles or hooks

  • cast on 33 stitches (this is a guide for less experienced knitters)

  • 6" squares

The Colours:

Blues, warm purples, greens, silver/ greys and pinks.

Haha Methe - complimenting (or not) little and large squares - I'm sure they'll add to the lovely homemade look of the blanket. (Glass half full and all that.)

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/03/2012 18:02

It will be gorgeoise!

KnottyLocks · 01/03/2012 18:02

Squid,

it's all about character. Very important. Grin

Yes, definitely. I absolutely love the pictures of the previous blankets you showed us. The best thing about them is that not only are no two blankets alike, but also that one person couldn't make a whole one, even the best knitter or crocheter in the world, because the whole beauty of them is that they're a group effort, with different styles and ideas from each individual. I love that each square represents someone - and in many cases two people, both donor and crafter - who care and are sending heartfelt good wishes to Mrs K and her family. Just lovely.

PurplePidjin · 01/03/2012 18:15

When they're together, they're done square to square not by length. So with a longer square, we crochet into every other row, with a shorter square there might be two stitches in one hold. I don't really know how to explain it but it works, and all the rows and columns end up even

KnottyLocks · 01/03/2012 18:15

That's exactly it, Squid. Each blanket has its own personality. They are so much more than just a blanket.

Pidj, spot on!

I know what you mean because that's what I do too.

Methe · 01/03/2012 18:17

Ooooh where are the pictures of previous blankets?

KnottyLocks · 01/03/2012 18:23

I've tried to articulate this before, always badly.
When the squares arrive I find it fascinating in many ways. Not just because I get to see the work of so many people but also because it feels like you get a glimpse of the person behind the squares too. Each set have a different scent. Often there are little handwritten notes tucked inside. There's a huge amount of humanity tucked into those squares, the packages, the intention.

It's a very touching and humbling experience.

Here's the ones I did plus Edgar's quilt. Knotty has an album of the ones she's done :)

PurpleSquid · 01/03/2012 18:37

Oh I hadn't seen those photos. Fabulous.

How many squares are there in each blanket?

KnottyLocks · 01/03/2012 18:40

Lots of people called you a loose hooker, Pistey. Including the postman.

KnottyLocks · 01/03/2012 18:44

Squid, the last two blankets were 9 x 9.

The blanket I'm just finishing for Chipmonkey is bigger than those.

It really depends on how many squares we get and how they look together.

I spend a fair while shuffling squares around until I'm happy with the overall effect.

OP posts:
PurplePidjin · 01/03/2012 18:45

They're about 6'x4'... 12x8... 96 squares per blanket. They're worth about £150 in wool alone.

OMG the drama when I posted the first one. Parcel Force lost it, MissPenteuth and I spent the entire weekend trying to track it down, it turned up in a skanky warehouse near Heathrow, minus the packaging. Ever since then we've arranged hand delivery - Mr Pistey flew one to Ireland when he went on business!

KnottyLocks · 01/03/2012 18:47

Sorry, should have made that clearer, the last 2 blankets were 9 squares by 9 squares.

LinzerTorte · 01/03/2012 18:52

Now I know why you were calling yourself a loose hooker, Pistey. I might have known there'd be a sensible explanation. Grin

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/03/2012 18:57

and you never did like to ask?!

Methe · 01/03/2012 18:59

Oh wow! They are absolutely wonderful. What a brilliant thing to do! Thank you for accepting my squares :)

I really am going to learn to knit now, some of those squares are amazing.

LinzerTorte · 01/03/2012 19:00

Well, you know, I didn't want to embarrass you or anything... Grin
