We have just heard the tragic and devastating news that MrsKwazii's daughter has passed away today in an accident. She was 4 Sad

We would like to make a blanket for MrsKwazii's family, to offer them what comfort we can.
If you would like to contribute in any way, please sign up below and PM RatherbeOnThePiste with your offer: crafting, donating, need wool, don't need wool, etc. She'll match you up.

We need knitters, crocheters and donors. If you would like to donate wool, then we can match you up with a crafter.

If you are offering to donate, we would be grateful if you would let us know if you'd like to donate 1 or 2 balls of wool. They cost roughly £5 per ball.

Crafters, if you need wool please let Pistey know if you'd like 1 or 2 balls of wool.
One ball should make at least 2 x 6" squares.

The wool we are using is:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (NOT the baby cashmerino)

  • or Rowan Cashsoft DK.

They are very similar and can be combined.

  • 4mm knitting needles or hooks

  • cast on 33 stitches (this is a guide for less experienced knitters)

  • 6" squares

The Colours:

Blues, warm purples, greens, silver/ greys and pinks.

Right right, got that. Will do! (Or rather won't do!)

puddleofpiddle · 01/03/2012 15:26

Not read through the thread but I'd like to make a couple of crochet squares again. Will pm pistey now.

upsydaisysexstylist · 01/03/2012 15:53

my two lovely balls of wool arrived today. Thank you greeting Thanks. Will get cracking later on today.

Silly question, I have little scraps of cashsoft and debbie bliss in other colours is it ok to use it to embroider some motifs, eyes up Lucinda Guy motif book going dusty on shelf.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/03/2012 15:54

All PMs replied to Thanks

Many thanks to everyone, more woolly wool has arrived with crafters thanks to our fabulous and generous donors. I shall post our thank you list this evening, as I am hoping that more wool will be found on doormats by those returning from work later.

Everyone is just lovely though

Thanks

When you said blocking is more or less ironing, is there anything else I shouldn't do. I realise that I never block my work Blush

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/03/2012 16:05

Mole - you shouldn't leave your pesky ends dangling.....

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/03/2012 16:07

upsydaisysexstylist - sounds lovely Thanks

Methe · 01/03/2012 16:14

What should one do with ones dangling pesky ends?

Blatherskite · 01/03/2012 16:17

How are we doing crafter and donor-wise Pistey?

Do we need more of either or are we fairly even?

nickelhasababy · 01/03/2012 16:18

you can sew in your pesky ends.

all you need to do is use a darning needle and weave in the pesky ends.

They don't show through, you just follow the line of the chain.

Methe · 01/03/2012 16:22

Oh ok cool :) my Grandma made me a sewing kit last year from things she salvaged from her best friend who had died's house.. I bet there's one in there!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/03/2012 16:40

Blatherskite - at the moment it is all very even, and everything is going really well. We are absolutely delighted. Thank you.

We have had the most fabulous response for the two current blanket projects, we really have been blown away. We have also collected cash donations for wool needed to do the final constructions for which we are very grateful indeed.

I know some people are still waiting for wool deliveries, but such a lot is already in the hands of the lovely crafters, which is excellent. If we leave it until the post arrives on Saturday, then if wool hasn't arrived we can start following up.

About five crafters have finished and are onto the posting stage. All I can say is wow! Frighteningly Soupy is asking for the posting address, which is all wrong, because we haven't even gone past the deadline yet.
What is going on? Confused

Molehillmountain · 01/03/2012 16:41

I would never do such a thing Wink. Needles I can do-irons not so much!

PippiL · 01/03/2012 17:04

I must admit, I was going to block. Won't now though! I would normally swish about in hand warm water and then place between towels til the water comes out, and never never dry on a radiator!

HOWEVER, I will not do that this time.

But because I have done some footprints they could really do with pressing flat. Might put them under some heavy books for a while!

SoupDragon · 01/03/2012 17:07

The more you insult me, the worse the addressing of the envelope gets, pistey.

and I can get really bad

GetOnYourDancingShoes · 01/03/2012 17:20

Two balls of yarn dropped through my door today, courtesy of a lovely donor, KB. Thank you!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/03/2012 17:25

Please DON'T block your squares!! Knotty crochets the blankets together and it is much easier if squares aren't blocked, because she finds it difficult getting her hook through.

PippiL = Your footprints sound fab. Don't forget each square is encouraged into place by its neighbours. It will be fine Smile

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/03/2012 17:25

Ooooooo - more woolly wool!

PurpleSquid · 01/03/2012 17:29

Sorry to be a pain with this. Blush

My square is a bit wider than 6" even though I cast on 33 stitches and still have 33 stitches! It's more like 7". Will that be ok or do I need to re-do it? Confused

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/03/2012 17:31

I only cast on 29 because I am quite a slack knitter.

How many rows have you done purple?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/03/2012 17:32

I was also called a loose hooker by my crochet teacher. But that is another story....

PurpleSquid · 01/03/2012 17:33

Erm. No idea. It's just about 6" in length now though.

I will re-do it though, if it's no use.

If I'd had a brain, I'd have measured it earlier.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/03/2012 17:38

NO!! Don't do it again, that's too painful! Maybe experiment with casting on if you have enough wool to do another square? But do send this one though Thanks

You have to do about five rows in my (v limited experience) to know how wide it will be.

Iit's all good Purple, no worries Thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/03/2012 17:39

I love the way I'm advising on knitting

I almost sound like I know what I'm talking about! Wine Cheers!

PurpleSquid · 01/03/2012 17:46

Ah ok! Are you sure? As long as it will be actually useful? I don't want to send it if it can't be used because it's a stupid size. Tuts at self.

That's the thing though, really. I'm so novice that I really have no idea what 'kind' of knitter I am relative to the average. I've only really tried scarves before so they didn't have to be any particular set size. If I knit any tighter, I find it difficult to get the second needle through the stitch.

I only have one ball of wool, but there looks to be quite a lot left, so hopefully enough for another square. It looks like it to my inexpert eye, from how much has been used so far. I'll definitely try, anyway.

I'll try 29 stitches this time, then, and see how that goes - and check earlier!

Thanks for the advice! Thanks
