"A message on the website states that due to pressure within the service and a significant reduction in staff it is unable to offer new appointments to young people. Adult appointments are also limited."

The Herald understands that the over-stretched Sandyford service is also facing a funding cut of around half a million pounds a year.

The Glasgow City Health and Care Partnership (CHCP) said “all aspects” of health and social care services were being considered and that difficult decisions would have to be made.

There have been calls for the Sandyford gender clinic to be closed after NHS England decided to wind up the equivalent service in London.

I wonder if staff are jumping ship?

Good.

Fuck, so they deliberately stoke the monster, create the perfect conditions that creates and glamourises the distress of young people and children, and then they take the monster away, leaving all these kids high and dry.

Absolute fuckers

mrshoho · 15/02/2023 09:11

Wow! This is progress.

ResisterRex · 15/02/2023 09:14

With no inquiry, this looks like a great way of gradually withdrawing while holding no one to account.

Clymene · 15/02/2023 09:16

Rats leaving a sinking ship.

I think they created a monster with these "gender" clinics. They know they created a monster but they can't do a reverse ferret without being accused of genocide so instead they are going to blame funding cuts and staff shortages and the Tories rather than face the fact that they are scared about the exponential growth of an industry that involves medicalising and performing surgeries on healthy children.

That's a shame as it has provided valuable sexual health services including for victims or rape.

Limits to its provision will disproportionately affect women in Glasgow who were vast majority users of its services, including their access to contraception, advice on pregnancy, managing sexual health problems and treatment of STIs.

Baldieheid · 15/02/2023 09:21

If the clinic is closed, does that mean there's no-one for detransitioners to get answers from, or who they can take legal action against? Or does it just pass up the chain to the NHS or Govt?

They'd have to be mad not to smell the lawsuits coming, so cynical old me is wondering if they're trying to avoid taking responsibility for the mess they've created...

I thought it was the gender identity clinic closing, not the sexual health etc side?

Leaving children and teens in a state of fragile mental health though is terrible news. I didn't see in the article if there is any balanced and neutral support being provided in the meantime.

The news will just cause outrage and more scaremongering, unfortunately. In this way, it is not a win.

If a new service is created following Dr Cass' findings later this year, then that will be good news. As long as it is not falsely said to be based on her work, and that it continues to be just like the old one.

Workerbeep · 15/02/2023 09:29

I thought Nicola Sturgeon had pledged to cut waiting times for gender clinics?

Yeah it’s arse covering. They’re monsters

but from a harm minimisation perspective: good

Crunchyb · 15/02/2023 09:35

It doesn’t seem like a permanent closure which is what your title implies, just closed to new patients. Clearly there are serious problems with the service and a large potential funding cut but the title does seem a bit click-baity to me.

I wonder if staff are jumping ship?

That was my first thought. If I was a medic compelled to participate in what is a slowly unfolding horrific scandal, I know I would.

PinkyU · 15/02/2023 09:41

It’s actually not great news, how incredibly short sighted.

Those young people will still need to access mental health services which will mean a massively over stretched, under resourced CAMHS service will be prevented from helping other YP as they will now have to absorb sandyfords excess patients.

How is that great news?!

Bingo. It'll be Westminster's fault.

And it is cowardly bullshit if this is what they're doing. The children being funnelled into this service need support and help, not sudden dropping when the shit gets too close to the fan.

Yes considering these treatments are constantly described as "life saving" it does seem like an abrupt and unexplained closure with no alternative provision in place to deal with the consequences.

Err, they won’t be steered towards sterilisation as the first/only solution?

you say potato etc, but on balance, accepting that it’s an overall shit show, that seems like a chink of sunlight

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 15/02/2023 09:54

I'm feeling cautiously positive about this news. One of the many mistakes the Tavistock GIDS made was to accept more referrals than they could safely handle.
