Those young people will still need to access mental health services...

Which they don't currently receive.

"A message on the website states that due to pressure within the service and a significant reduction in staff it is unable to offer new appointments to young people. Adult appointments are also limited."

In a week where the Times has run the articles on Hannah Barnes book about the Tavi, I do not think for one second that 'pressure within the service' and 'significant reduction in staff' is related to anything but staff realising how transing kids is toxic - either to the kids or their own careers.

Leaving children and teens in a state of fragile mental health though is terrible news. I didn't see in the article if there is any balanced and neutral support being provided in the meantime.

Yes considering these treatments are constantly described as "life saving" it does seem like an abrupt and unexplained closure with no alternative provision in place to deal with the consequences.

Yes. It seems very irresponsible. All those on the waiting list will now be either looking for alternatives - Gender GP or be funneled to charities such as Mermaids for support while waiting further.

That is very worrisome too.

It’s actually not great news, how incredibly short sighted.

Those young people will still need to access mental health services which will mean a massively over stretched, under resourced CAMHS service will be prevented from helping other YP as they will now have to absorb sandyfords excess patients.

How is that great news?!

The solution there is that the Scottish government increases funding for CAMHS and ensures that distressed young people have access to proper, exploratory support that is not looking to funnel them down any pathway.

The gender identity service was never going to do that.

Let’s ask why so many Scottish young people are suffering mental health problems. And try to address this, as well as offering those affected appropriate treatment.

The Scottish government, will of course, try to blame this on everyone but themselves. But the state of NHS Scotland is entirely the Scottish government’s fault. The SNP have been in power for a long time and need to take responsibility for
the shit show they preside over.

Please can we all vote the SNP and Greens out at the next election. Please.

Out of the frying pan into the fire!

Is sturgeon resigning today. Press conference at 11am ?

littlbrowndog · 15/02/2023 10:05

Oh bbc just announced it

Barely anyone actually voted for the greens in the first place.

It’s just that they have been able to gain enormously disproportionate political power because they were willing to prop up the SNP.

And the SNP don’t actually care about the views of the Scottish people.

littlbrowndog · 15/02/2023 10:06

Yeah Lorna slater. Got 6000 votes 😖

The thing about Sturgeon resigning is that her replacement will probably be just as shit.

But good. She deserves to have to resign over this.

ItsDinah · 15/02/2023 10:17

Well, the easiest way to cut waiting list times is to abolish the waiting list. No list,no wait.

I wonder how a new leader is voted in with the SNP. If it’s other SNP MP or if it’s the membership?

Quite. The waiting list was doomed to get longer and longer however much money they threw at it. As gender began to incorporate all manner of body modification, all lifesaving of course, it would have been impossible to keep up.

services do sometimes have to close waiting lists - done when it takes more time to manage the list than do work ie when it could be a couple of years to get an appointment or service. It’s a v loud HELP to commissioners of the service and to other organisations such as Camhs or GPs who make the referrals that pushing a patient up the line isn’t possible any more

Also the ridiculous list vote system

With no inquiry, this looks like a great way of gradually withdrawing while holding no one to account.

That’s the way of Nicola Sturgeon! ‘Never accept responsibility’ is pretty much her mantra. The whole rapists in women’s prisons thing? That’s totally not on her, either!

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 15/02/2023 10:40

Leaving children and teens in a state of fragile mental health though is terrible news.

Well... if Sandyford aren't accepting referrals then that pushes other services to do something. Especially since many of these kids have multiple conditions.

Yes it will still be whack-a-mole with Mermaids and GenderGP. But now that Susie Green has left under a cloud and Mermaids themselves are under investigation, maybe Mermaids will have the good sense to break any links with GenderGP (etc) at least for the under 18s.

I bet she’ll pretend her resignation has got nothing to do with GRR or Scottish Prison policy.

Yes, quietly creeping away, hoping nobody notices…

rogdmum · 15/02/2023 11:02

This is not at all saying the clinic is closing. It is saying they are closing the waiting list for new referrals.

They have struggled in recent years to recruit staff and this looks like a staffing problem. If they manage to recruit staff, they will reopen the waiting list.

In the meantime, they are busy shunting the 17 year olds on the waiting lists to the adult clinics where their time on the Sandyford lists are counted as “time served”, resulting in some 17 year olds receiving immediate appointments at the adult clinics.
