Right, reading these boards recently has given me a bit of a kick up the arse on my feminist principles. I've done a bit of 'light' reading in the area (think The Beauty Myth as a teenager) but think I need something a bit more serious without being so weighty I never pick it up. I'd rather have something published in, say, the last 15 years than any of the 'classics'.

Any ideas?

You can probably watch it on i-player should you care, it was the last sketch in the show.

I suspect you may do better to just ignore me altogether and move on.

I just had to get that off my chest.

SelaciousCrumb · 14/07/2010 13:44

"Selacious, I've just written that two women a week are murdered in the UK at the hands of their spouse. What real world do you live in?"

Sorry did i miss something ?

SelaciousCrumb · 14/07/2010 13:46

i think i missed the last bit or M&W , what was on after it ?

Easywriter · 14/07/2010 13:46

Oh my word!

I seem to have wandered into a sensitive moment in a heated ddiscussion.

Please, please, please ignore me.

I was simpy being a pedant regarding the title of the thread which has been bugging me since it began.

I wasn't contributing to your discussion/argument.

Easywriter · 14/07/2010 13:48

Sorry!

Sakura · 14/07/2010 14:05

sparky,
no I know you're not. I was threatened with the police earlier down the thread.

Easywriter!
Sorry, I thought the Reccomend the book title going on here was funny too!!I don't know whats going on on this thread since the police threat came up.

Sakura · 14/07/2010 14:15

sparky, are you a trans woman? If so please read the thread to know that this thread is not about how trans women are supposed to live their lives. Radical feminists are supportive of anyone living the way they want and with tolerance and without discrimination. Our goals are the same. Trans women should be afforded the respect and dignity of any human being.
BUt wOmen are not yet treated with respect and dignity on the same level as males, so that means radical feminists need to sort out women's problems before they sort out trans women's problems IYSWIM.

If women were not an oppressed group, none of this would be a problem.

RibenaBerry · 14/07/2010 14:42

It's the first time I've been back to this thread and it's got even scarier. I've even upset the pedants. Eek!

Well, anyway, I've been trying to read Greer (the Whole Woman) after getting it at the library, but I'm afraid I'm struggling again. I just couldn't (personally) give a toss about mestrual art and whether I should have tasted my own blood. The transsexual thing is also (whilst obviously very important to some people) rather niche for me. Some interesting stuff about surgery, but that's about all that has grabbed me so far.

What I really want to learn about is not the academic debate of feminism, but a detailed analysis of real life issues for the majority of woman. The beauty industry, jobs, pay, healthcare, porn...

Anyone who is still around, do you think I'm likely to get on with Living Dolls? The Equality Illusion? Reclaiming the F Word? I'm going to have to shell out on Amazon this time, so would appreciate some guidance.

Sakura · 14/07/2010 14:46

I'm reading the Equality Illusion right now. It's really approachable and puts everything into context. In fact, I'd say it was a summary of everything.

Blackduck · 14/07/2010 15:28

Equality Illusion and Reclaiming the F Word both very good and very readable....

vesuvia · 14/07/2010 15:42

I took a look at the Transkids website listed much earlier in this thread.

It states "Transgendered girls, often known as "Tomboys" have been relatively common in primary schools."

Food for thought...

wastingaway · 14/07/2010 15:50
Shock
Blackduck · 14/07/2010 15:56

blimey... what does that make me

sparky159 · 14/07/2010 16:28

Blackduck
i dont know-what would this make you?
cor blimey-you could be transgendered and not realise it!!!!
vesuvia
thankyou!
yes-afraid so-trans also affects"girls"aswell!
Sukura earlier on stated that this was just a xy condition-its not!
its not strickly true that tomboys are trans-
because-
you can get tomboys-who are happy to be tomboys-and this can go across the board-and at the other end of the spectrum theres trans!even when a child is trans[ftm]society just sees them as tomboys and doesnt realise the very real problems they have!
yes-it is food for thought isnt it!!!

wastingaway · 14/07/2010 16:37

As a former tomboy I now feel qualified to talk about trans experiences.

This is exactly the problem with this subject.
It is all about preserving the stereotypical gender roles.

Being a tomboy is just one way of being a girl and is in no way the same as being trans.

sparky159 · 14/07/2010 16:53

yep-i tottally agree with you!
being a tomboy isnt the same as being trans-
so if you was a tomboy-how can you posssibly be qualified to talk about the trans experiance?
[its all about............]
by jove-i think we re getting there!!
i will eventually get round to be saying why i feel that trans could be a femminist/womans issue!

wastingaway · 14/07/2010 18:04

Sparky, it's a Trankids site saying that tomboys are transgendered apparently.

I know that it's not the same, but some trans don't by the sound of it.

sethstarkaddersmum · 14/07/2010 18:11

I think one could make a pretty good case for George in The Famous Five being trans though.

wastingaway · 14/07/2010 18:13

Haven't read them Seth, but considering the time it was written, could it not just be a reaction against the very narrow choices available to girls?
I can't imagine Enid being that radical.

sparky159 · 14/07/2010 18:30

Enid Blyton was said to have had a lesbian realashionship-not the same as trans i know-
but whos to tell that she wasnt a closet transman-and what she felt come out in her charachters?not impossible!

and-was Billy Tipton actually a transman-or was he just trying to break in to the male world?
[sorry-not sure if "break into the ..."are the right words]

be back later to answer a couple of posts!

Blackduck · 14/07/2010 18:34

exactly wasting - as a former tomboy I am pretty sure I haven't/wasn't/am not transgendered .....

Can i ask what site this was?
I was a tomboy and still can be, i'm not trans though

vesuvia · 14/07/2010 21:13

sally66. The Transkids web page that I got the quote from is transkids.synthasite.com/about-transgendered-children.php

sally66 · 14/07/2010 21:14

thank you
will have a look at it

Blackduck · 14/07/2010 21:20
