…Who’s stuck in the past. To be ‘cool and curious’ you need to use non- biological sex based pronouns. And this is about a ‘certain generation.’ I mean I’m 32 and think it’s bollocks.

plus, as a bonus, ‘if you don’t like me, fine, as long as you use my correct pronouns.’

ffs

What is the purpose of this self identification?

And why does it apply to sex, sorry gender which is completely different but also sometimes the same but not to age, race or being rich?

nutmeg7 · Today 08:46

sweetnsourr · Today 08:31

No, you are confused about the context of the discussion which was that sex in itself did not prove a disadvantage existed & where it might required legal justification to receive an exemption from anti discrimination law.

And yet, sex is indisputably a physical disadvantage for females.

Violence between the sexes is overwhelmingly male on female.
Females are not as strong or big as males, and we are also vulnerable to pregnancy via rape.

I am not sure why you are so desperate to pretend that human beings don’t know this and haven’t known it for thousands of years.

Well, I do have an idea - you are desperate to find a legitimate reason for society to group people by “gendered expression” rather than sex so that a tiny number of men can gain access to female spaces.

You are happy to throw female people’s needs under the bus.

Do you really think this is what most women's lives revolve around?

Bear in mind that most of the women on here are either mothers or older women.

You seem to be under the impression that most women are under 30, single and looking for a male partner.

It's that "invisible women" thing again where older women cease to exist as actual people, isn't it? If we're not young and looking for a man, we don't exist at all.

Do you really think this is what most women's lives revolve around?

No but consumerist habits speak to inclinations & commitment.

Bear in mind that most of the women on here are either mothers or older women.

Aaand? They no longer seek partnerships or to be attractive? Bear in mind we weren't exactly evolved to live long lives. Its only technology that saved us from an early death. Face facts, we are hard wired for mating so much so we still seek partnerships into old age. Not to mention the medical cosmetic industry is heavily supported by older women.

You seem to be under the impression that most women are under 30, single and looking for a male partner.

I never said as much. And people in partnerships don't all necessarily 'give up'.

It's that "invisible women" thing again where older women cease to exist as actual people, isn't it? If we're not young and looking for a man, we don't exist at all.

Whaaat? How you read old age erasure out of evolutionary mating strategies is beyond me. You might need to stop centering yourself as an imaginary victim if you want to live in reality.

I'm sometimes astounded by the level of utter fury directed at trans people on here. It's massively depressing for a mum who already fears losing her young adult child to anti-trans violence. Just ten minutes on here can convince me he's not going to make it, because he's described that hate up close, as he was groped and punched.

I know there are many decent people here, but the rest...why is it so impossible to discuss gender issues without getting angry that trans people exist, wear clothes, appear on TV, slap lippy on sometimes? You talk about them like they're an evil crime syndicate.

I know trans women who've been attacked in their homes simply for being trans. The thread on Dr Upton tells me why. Just, horrible.

My fury is directed at MEN who invade private spaces reserved for WOMEN like me.

Gender is merely a feeling. It only exists in someone's head. It should never dictate laws no force people to believe lies and delusions.

Trans does not exist. There are men/males and women/females. How they feel about themselves is private, for them alone and should never be imposed upon anyone else in the form of "trans".

Dr Upton is an abusive man who used his powerful position to destroy a woman who dared to say "no" to him. I hear he is causing ructions in his post in Australia now.

So in that case, if more men decided adopt the “sexed behaviours” society deems attributable to women, then won’t those behaviours no longer be classed as attributable to women, but to both sexes?

Bingo!

what behaviours are we discussing here? Male violence? In that case, even if a male claims other “sexed behaviours” more aligned with women in your opinion, then he would still retain his propensity to male violence, as humans cannot change sex.

There's this thing called 'individuals'.

if as we have just decided, males retain their sexed behaviours, which you claim are innate, why should some males gain access to to female spaces because they claim they also have attributes more “aligned with women”?

I said behaviours are both nature nurture. While some behaviours are more common to each sex, the sexes also share behavioural traits. See above for: Individuals.

Also note, this thread is about pronouns usage not single sex spaces so see if you can maintain at least one thread that doesn't involve your obsession with loo etiquette so we all don't die of boredom.

We’re also obsessed with prisons, rape crisis services, changing rooms, medical care, personal care for vulnerable people.

Men are not female.

You seem excessively pre-occupied with 'personal rights' and 'choices', though most things in society are not predicated around an individual's preferences. Society only functions ( and can only be organised) with a large measure of shared and common understanding. And for the sake of emotional stability and mental health we all need to accept that.

Edited

You seem excessively pre-occupied with 'personal rights' and 'choices',

Um, I hate to break it to you but we in the west live in individualist & liberal societies rather than in collectivist dictatorial ones, you know the thing that enabled feminism even though it was a 'pain' to the prevailing powers to accomadate. In other words, individual rights &personal liberty is a biggie in terms of underlying principles despite it being more difficult to accomodate. Perhaps China might be a better fit for you?

Of course your privilege of being in a position of power for now obscures how the other half live.

Eddie Izzard doesn’t seem to have changed over the years despite preferring different pronouns.

Is that doing it wrong?

He's a man when using male facilities and a creepy man when using women's facilities.

I never forgot when he talked about times when he was identifying as a man he wore flat shoes and when identifying as a woman he wore heels. Hmm

Women are just a costume to don when he feels like it.

Self ID was tried in the UK and failed.

Just like you did when you referred to Chloe as 'her'.

And when self ID was being debated, it was self ID of gender which was to change someone's legally recognised sex.

So much for gender and sex being different things.

sweetnsourr · Today 09:03

What is the purpose of this self identification?

The purpose of self-identification is to allow individuals to voluntarily define and share their personal, social, cultural, or medical characteristics (such as race, gender, disability, religion or neuro divergence) so they & others can understand themselves.

Oh aye right.

Why is it ONLY men that have to 'understand themselves' listening to women in the toilet?

an adult female human being:

an adult who lives and identifies as female though they may have been considered to have a different sex at birth:

Sorry but "adult human female" isn't the only show in town.

This nonsense from a once revered university who no longer commands respect and is facing an independent enquiry into the fantasist professor debacle Hmm.

Try the Oxford version: An adult female human being. The counterpart of man.

It does not confer a power to change how others see you or to become something that you are not.

Noone said it did. That's purely hyper paranoia at work.

or to become something that you are not.

its gender not sex for the zillionth time.

And yet that dictionary definition you listed conflates sex and gender in a very smudgy way. As does a great deal of genderist discourse in this area.

” … presents as female although they might have been considered to be a different sex at birth”.

Sex is not so ambiguous in over 99% of cases that it is a matter of what someone “considers” it to be.

None of you can think or argue straight because you mix up sex and gender as and when it suits you in an order to obfuscate and blur your meaning.

All to allow some men into female spaces.

The context is self identification. The aren't identifying with man or woman social gender categories.

Self, Self, Self!

All of the pre-occupation with self, with " living your best life"; "being your true self"...you can surely understsand why people can see 'genderism' as being straight out of American culture - with its excessive focus on the individual - aligned with the power of consumerism and big pharma to sell you what it is you think you need to fulfil your self. 'Gender Theory' did indeed arrive out of the american academy - and is the apotheosis of this sort of culture.

Societies have to be a balance bteween individual freedoms ( and some societies are incredibly restrictive when it come sto the 'self') and collective responsibilities. Not everything is about 'you', and most societies are arranged in ways that are most functional to the group - based on shared and common understandings, and on shared responsibilities.

The reason we have sex based categories and sex based protections in certain circumstances is because a millennia of experience has shown human beings some of the obvious differences between the sexes -and why, in civilised societies, there needs to be certain sex based provisions in order to provide a measure of safety, dignity, and equity, for female people especially.

It doesn't matter how much the individual male or female person wants to express their " true self" by performing cross sex 'gender' they remain either male or female and thus subject to the same basic laws, rules, and drives, as everyone else.

Shortshriftandlethal · Today 09:27

sweetnsourr · Today 08:34

The context is self identification & pronouns remember. Its remarkable how gender critical feminists always need to centre their own subjective preferences even on the self identification of others.

Its an illiberal movement to its core.

It is not a movement which is predicated soley on self satisfaction if that is what you mean by " illiberal".

Pingponghavoc · Today 09:27

If being under the trans umbrella is self determined, talk about gender and sex role and stereotypes is unnecessary.

Why would anyone have accept or reject roles and stereotypes is the concept is self determined?

Chloe is saying shes non binary because she wants to be. Eddie izzard is a saying hes trans because he wants to be. There are no rules to follow.

TRA are saying we need to respect this and refer to these people with their preferred pronouns.

All well and good. We are in a liberal society, after all.

Then, on another thread, or in another situation, trans people are saying that trans is innate, its not a choice. Trans people are a marginalised minority and need the state to provide or allow for gendered spaces.

Suddenly gender isnt self determined, its something that needs rules. Who is of a particular gender and what they need has to be defined to make the space for that gender. And everyone has to comply.

The liberal society has disappeared.

But in each scenario sex is irrelevant.

No one uses third person pronouns about themselves so it always falls on everyone else to do the work. Imagine making demands on people when you have to do zilch.

Exactly, asking other people to do the heavy pronouns lifting.

Shortshriftandlethal · Today 09:29

sweetnsourr · Today 08:21

Nope. Its a lot broader. Feminine presentation is a spectrum.

Yes, and most of the cross dressing men I see have definitely chosen on a specific 'look' from that 'spectrum' - one that particularly appeals to them, and then play it to the hilt.

Oh, are you saying people can identify into a different race now? Or identify into neuro divergence? Interesting! So if I claim to be Asian, even though I am not, should I expect all Asian people to respect my self identification? If not, why not?

Self identification of neurodivergence has definitely not led to more understanding of e.g. ADHD and autism.

Instead it has created the perception that the terms are meaningless, and that has caused real harm.
