๐Ÿ™„ sorry about DM link - itโ€™s the only one not behind a paywall. Men on the Facebook group are saying that women should join female only gyms.

David Lloyd sparks equality row by excluding men from spa areas

The exclusive gym group has introduced weekly women-only spa sessions in several of its branches due toย what it described as 'significant feedback' from female members.

Can you specify what you think might happen to you in a spa that is potentially dangerous, that cannot happen in other public places such as libraries or supermarkets?

Or do you think we should segregate men and women in all public places, Afghanistan style?

Absolutely, I'm covert Taliban, me. I'm all for burkas in saunas - make you sweat more, innit?

More seriously, I really am mystified by what you hope to achieve with questions like that. Are you here to convince, or to look ridiculous?

Basic tip for the future: absurd straw men look weak and childish, effectively proclaiming a lack of comeback, while acknowledging the potential validity of the counter-argument and then breaking it down can be powerful.

I don't believe you're in good faith if that's your response.

I'll check back in to see if there's anything interesting to respond to later. Meanwhile, your question's been answered by much of the rest of the thread.

In a supermarket or library there's very little chance of finding yourself wearing only your swim wear behind a closed door with a man/men wearing only trunks.

A man who you yourself have pointed out will be 'excited' by seeing naked female flesh.

Just two hours a week where women don't have to worry about what might happen in that closed room is surely not too much for decent people to understand. 99% of the membership at Purley clearly think it's a sensible idea.

Thank you to those with more patience than me this fine evening.

What a farce.

This thread has taken an unusual turn for the feminist board I feel. Women posting their experiences of being harassed by men in saunas and steam rooms have been told they are stealth boasting and being vile and hateful about the men.

Very unusual hmmm ๐Ÿค”

Do you think this board should be censored?

I'm not sure I believe you're real. A grandmother talking about women having big tits and defending men to the hilt.

You don't read real to me. That's all I'm saying.

Although to be honest my husband's mother thought that Prince Andrew was very hard done to and had done nothing wrong so perhaps some grandmothers feel that way.....

Lemieux7 · 19/10/2026 20:46

My daughters who are young adults wonโ€™t go in the spa if men are in there. They peer in and then usually leave. Itโ€™s a very telling thing.

It's rare that it bugs me - usually it has me smirking at the sheer stupidity. But I'm a glass of wine down after a busy day and just astonished at what some are prepared to put their (admittedly cool pseudonomic username) to!

ETA: Sorry - Cattiette's catty side showing. I don't usually smirk, tbh. I do wrestle with what the heck's going on in some people's heads, though. And occasionally I do snort, yes.

In libraries and supermarkets, women are not in a state of undress.

Yes, that's true. But it doesn't answer my question. My question was:

"Can you specify what you think might happen to you in a spa that is potentially dangerous, that cannot happen in other public places such as libraries or supermarkets?"

Could you specify why it's got to be "cannot" as opposed to more/less likely? Cannot is another trick of the inexperienced debater - sounds good, so powerful and emphatic... but actually reveals the inherent fear of asking about reality and truth, as opposed to impossible extremes and hypotheticals.

I don't think our Muslim posters and Muslim David Lloyd clients would be too thrilled with being labelled 'covert Taliban' simply because some choose to wear burkhinis in the spa, which nobody has a problem with, at least at the club I attend. But I guess if one is going to make sweeping discriminatory statements, one doesn't care which group they are aimed at. It really isn't funny, 'innit'.

So when you're in Tesco and the library, you're constantly worried that you might be sexually assaulted, and your two hours in the spa is your only relief from that?

What do you do when you go on holiday to a beach? You seem to be making an argument for women wearing burkhas.

Now I know you're not in good faith.

If you've not already understood that posters here can see you working through every trick in the Peter and Jane Learn To Debate playbook, you probably won't now.

Shaming only works where there's grounds for shame.

In this case, the posters here are a bit to sharp for it - and familiar with the Taliban being brought in to discussions like this in offensively absurd analogies.

Usually, I challenge it more earnestly. Today, I got bored and tried satire.

What's scary is that I don't think you could distinguish between either of those approaches to challenging it.

I agree that it's lawful discrimination. I'm glad you also now agree that it's discrimination.

I have not discussed the law at all, in any of my posts on this thread. It is not relevant to my posts. But thank you for your patronising reply anyway.

I posted it was lawful discrimination pages back. So Iโ€™m not sure what your โ€˜now agreeโ€™ is about. Is it a comprehension thing?

The legislation is entirely relevant as it is the Equality Act that allows lawful discrimination as a proportionate means to achieve a legitimate aim. Equality Act. Clueโ€™s in the name.

It's not relevant who or what I am, because we are debating concepts, ideas and opinions. Nobody has any idea who anyone is online. I could be anyone, and so could you. I may or may not be a grandmother or a David Lloyd club member. It's none of your business and I'm hardly going to put my life story online on a public message board.

In response to a woman making derogatory remarks about too many hairy men hanging around the spa, I asked how she would feel if the boot were on the other foot and a man posted here that there were too many women with big tits hanging around the spa. If you can dish it out, be prepared to take it in return. Practise what you preach and treat others how you would like to be treated yourself. It is not acceptable to attack men for being born with hair and it is not acceptable for attacking women for their physical attributes either. These are not things we choose, they are accidents of genetics.

Rage bait, even.

Yep, my guess is bored teen lad.

I'm off.

My sympathies to posters who have engaged with the seriousness with which I usually do.

But, as usual, let it show for the record - we have here a testament to the rationality and empathy on the side of the woman-only hour argument, and the laughably ridiculous attitudes women can face despite that.

Whatever your views on the gym's choice, this thread as whole seems to speak to its validity.

Thank you for your service there, Midnight.

Any examples of what catastrophes may await you in the spa would be good. Cannot or more/less likely will be fine.

I live on the coast so don't need to go on holiday to go to a beach.

Tesco/library - jeans, shirt multiple people and staff around - no worry at all.
Beach - bathers, people around - no worry at all. Do it every day.
Beach - bathers, nobody around except a group of men - a level of awareness that I am alone and vulnerable.
Sauna - door closed,no staff in evidence, bathing suit, just me and two men in trunks - a level of awareness that I am alone and vulnerable.

I've never known a women who wouldn't understand the above.

You're either being deliberately obtuse or are a man.

This must be David Lloyd thing, I'm afraid. I'm much happier at the council run facilities. I belonged briefly, and at DL I found men, women and children had a special kind of entitlement you don't see elsewhere.

I have discovered a council run spa. Hot tub, therapy pool, cold plunge and 4/5 different saunas/stream rooms. I have never experienced the kind of behaviour you're describing, everyone is pleasant and respectful.

DD and I were members of our local Virgin gym . the jacuzzi pool was huge with loungers in the side a sauna room, was a very nice place.
We wanted to go evenings and weekends due to work/school etc. But it was a horrible experience, crowded with groups of loud men , messing around, noisy and basically not giving a fig for other members.
We went 3 times then Never again Hated it.

You say your identity doesnโ€™t matter, but you are the one who explicitly brought up being a grandmother in past threads to give yourself real-world authority on male behavior. You can't use your personal life as a shield when it suits you, and then claim 'itโ€™s none of your business' the second your logic gets challenged.

If you are willing to admit you 'may or may not' even be a grandmother or a David Lloyd member, you're essentially admitting your arguments are just abstract contrarianism. People aren't debating 'concepts' in a vacuum hereโ€”women are discussing their actual, physical safety and comfort in real-world spaces.

You're welcome. It's a shame that you have to be rude about people with views that don't correspond with your own, but it is what it is.
