‘Woman’ missing in Southampton

Now I hope that this person is found safe and well - but this is not a woman! Why is Samantha being described as a woman? This helps no one, neither the person who is missing nor those searching for him.

It came back up when the person who said the horrible comments came back to express a load of concern that felt EXTEMELY dishonest and creepy, given their earlier jokes. I have no idea why @Ereshkigalangcleg got invested in defending them.

You revived the thread with a laughing emoji (super mature) quoting a comment by TheywontletmehavethenameIwant, who made neither of the two comments. The person who made one of the comments wasn’t on the thread then. You can’t have been reviving it because you were bothered about their dishonesty. Are you inhabiting some parallel universe?

It’s trans woman. It’s an adjective.

No it isn't. Not in the UK. Transwomen are men (as defined in the Equality Act, by biological sex). Their gender presentation is their own business, but their sex remains male.

Samantha is a man. Possibly a man who has gone through some "gender affirming medical treatments" but still a man.

That doesn't mean they aren't vulnerable and need to be found as soon as possible. Women aren't the only people who are vulnerable.

Obfuscating the description of Samantha impedes rather than aids the chance of spotting them. Their family must be worried sick after so long.

FancyKeyboard · 20/10/2026 09:33

Why couldn't they just say Missing person Samantha, may be presenting as male or female? With or without the name.

Missing woman is a joke. Missing transwoman would be ok but still potentially misleading if he is currently presenting male.

Yes, exactly.

No, I'm not confusing anything.

You revived the thread yesterday at 20:43 with a laughing emoji in response to a different poster.
Alucard joined the thread, you didn't like that and so it all kicked off.

You have done more to highlight that horrible "breasts" comment than anyone else. I'm sure that was not your intention.

Apologies, I did laugh at the one about the ‘authorities’ and people just believing they should be able to post as much hate speech as they like.

but then @Alucard55 returned with their faux concern and I replied.

Imagine Samantha, stood somewhere potentially suicidal which is completely possible considering the urgency in the missing person appeals, opens up her phone and reads this thread.

nevernotmaybe · 20/10/2026 09:39

Whatever makes you feel desperately special, if it is piling on a word when someone might be in danger then you go for it.

That has been my point all along. I want the whole thing taken down. It started horrible and got worse.

Imagine if Samantha were described in a way that the general population could find him and be helped to the hospital.

Compassion isn't sycophancy. It is recognising that someone is struggling while also recognising that reality cannot change, and helping them deal with that.

Do you think a suicidal man is likely to open the FWR on Mumsnet? I mean it’s a possibility 🫤.

I’d advise you to stay away from the comment section on literally every news and media outlet that has reported on this situation. Should they all be shut down? This thread has been kind in comparison.

GreyskySexRealistsky · 20/10/2026 09:48

We all see threads that push our buttons more than others.

In my case, it's because I was once involved in a misper case in which the police misdescribed the missing person quite significantly. Crucial time was lost and valuable sightings were missed. Thankfully it turned out (mostly) okay in the end.

Accurate descriptions are vital.

Samantha is far more likely to be on Facebook, where the comments are actually transphobic thanks, in a large part, to the way the police have framed this. Various forces seem to have developed social media strategies that, as I said earlier, seems to be modelled on the Daily Mail.

This thread is about the wisdom of describing Samantha as a 'woman' when person or transwoman (or trans woman if you prefer) could have been used. You object to that. It doesn't matter what comments have or haven't been made, you wouldn't want the thread to stand.

(But sure you're incredibly concerned about Samantha reading this. So concerned that you repeated the most distasteful, deleted comment, just so Samantha wouldn't miss out on seeing it if they did come across the thread).

BackToLurk · 20/10/2026 09:51

I mean we can all imagine things. Imagine vulnerable women with CPTSD being told they have to share supposedly single-sex spaces with male people and if they don't want to they're vile bigots. Oh wait...

It’s the sixth article down and I had to scroll. In my experience of people intent on completing suicide they just go and do it. I doubt their focus would be googling themselves and scrolling Mumsnet.

Sorry, I just thought @Alucard55‘s pretend concern after making that post was too sinister and cruel to go unchallenged. If @Ereshkigalangcleg hasn’t involved herself for no reason demanding evidence, and @Alucard55 wasnt so invested in people knowing she said the testical bit of the in joke rather than the tuberous bit, it would have ended much quicker.

Shedmistress · 20/10/2026 09:59

Okthen0 · 20/10/2026 09:41

I'm completely in agreement with you.

If both of you are actually concerned with the missing person, I take it you are all over social media trying to find him?

if you'd rather spend your time on here, maybe you aren't as concerned as you think?

You are the one keeping it going.

It was deleted so maybe move on, go and do some work to find the missing person?

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 20/10/2026 10:04

I want, I demand, me me me, the only person on the thread who doesn't give a toss about the missing person is the person who's made the tread all about them and their demands.
Unhinged doesn't even cover it, stroppy, childish, temper tantrum, doesn't even cover it.
Meanwhile has the bloke been found yet, with all this supposed concern from a certain poster, they should be able to give an up date, they'll be paying close attention because they're oh so concerned.

You didn't need to repeat it. It was unnecessary and you could have just said "given your earlier comment I don't think your concern is genuine". I managed to reference the comment without spelling it out. Those who saw it, knew what it said you. In addition, if you genuinely thought it likely that Samantha would read this thread, as you claim, then it was nasty.

You kept it going. You also were creative with the truth regarding why you revived the thread.
