Petition urges LondonMayor to scrap Harry Potter Christmas lights over transphobia

Thousands of people have signed a petition calling on London Mayor Sadiq Khan to cancel Harry Potter-themed Christmas lights planned for Oxford Street this year.

The display is intended to promote the forthcoming Harry Potter TV series, but campaigners object to the promotion of JK Rowling's work due to what they argue are here anti-trans views.

Signatories to the petition, which was organised by the Good Law Project, also say the lights will leave trans people feeling unwelcome and unsafe in one of London's best-known festive locations.

If lights make you feel unsafe and unwelcome then you have some huge MH problems and maybe you should stay indoors.

Well, SOMEONE has to be to blame for their little darlings being completely unable to function in the real world - terrified of making a phone call or having to actually turn up to work on time, never mind feeling that hearing someone else’s opinion is an existential threat - and therefore having to spend their time online while wearing noise cancelling headphones in case they’re “triggered”.

If you can’t hear an opinion or see some lights without being traumatised you probably need some kind of supervision.

I don't know why they are so worked up.

After all, they regularly claim that a "vast majority" of people support them, so what difference do the lights make? Do they think people will be seduced over to the dark side by the twinkling?

How have these people got so much say it what goes on? Thought they were a minority. Can’t stand Harry Potter but agree with Rowling’s stance. Once you cave into this ridiculousness it just goes further and further.

Well, the Progress Pride flag is explicitly NOT in favour of anyone who believes sex takes priority over gender - lesbians included. So I don’t like it or the message it sends.

While I might complain about them appearing all over Central London, though, I wouldn’t petition to get them removed because they have a right to be there.

Looks lush! The birthday boy or girl (them being the only options) could gnom the snitch, recreating a moment from the books/films that (ironically) I had trouble swallowing.

It’s nearly mid October, they've left it way too late. Those lights will already have been made, paid for, and will be going up in probably just a couple of weeks.
