Thousands of people have signed a petition calling on London Mayor Sadiq Khan to cancel Harry Potter-themed Christmas lights planned for Oxford Street this year.

The display is intended to promote the forthcoming Harry Potter TV series, but campaigners object to the promotion of JK Rowling's work due to what they argue are here anti-trans views.

Signatories to the petition, which was organised by the Good Law Project, also say the lights will leave trans people feeling unwelcome and unsafe in one of London's best-known festive locations.

This is ridiculous as when others claim the pride flag makes them feel unwelcome. I don't understand the hypocrisy shown here.

Flag that is the symbol of a somewhat extremist and contentious political movement actively and contiually seeking to destroy the rights of women and homosexuals in law, adopted and deployed by local government representing and advertising their taken partisan position.

Lights representing fictional scenes from children's stories, not funded or deployed by local government and for the entertainment of tourists and visitors, with the supposed contentiousness being the images were created from the work of a writer that supposedly said things no one can ever actually pin down, and who funds women to have access to desperately needed services they otherwise couldn't have (thanks to the people from the flag political group) and to retain their actual legal rights.

Has that helped at all?

I don't have a problem with the Pride flag (although it does remind me mostly of the long defunct C&A), the so-called Progress flag is an abomination.

Still going strong in Europe! Can't remember if they've changed the logo though

I am quoting this because it is a superb encapsulation of the issue.

Gods, I am so tired of these crybullies.

Yes. That term entirely.

I was thinking this morning as I read this thread that the modern re make of 'Allo 'Allo in 2026 would probably involve Colonel Von Strohm going to the town mayor and sobbing all over his desk that the French Resistance were making him feel sad.

Abhannmor · Yesterday 11:20

I vague remember the Woodcraft Folk had the rainbow flag . I'd almost forgotten C and A though.

lcakethereforeIam · Yesterday 12:48

I always thought C&A stood for Clothes and Accessories, which fits with what many folx thinks is what a woman is.

I believe it's actually the initials of the people who started it.

I think the last time I was in a C&A was the store in Bradford. I desperately needed a clean top. I didn't care for any of the women's styles so bought one from the men's. Which just shows...something?

Can any of these ppl walk through a children's section of a store, I still see lots of HP themed stuff, the transphobic aura might overwhelm them

Is it Regent Street that gets positively festooned with hanging progress flags?
Always makes me think of Leni Riefenstahl.

(expecting this one to get pulled)

I get definite Sound of Music vibes, I agree.

Yes. I don’t know who Riefenstahl was but they look bloody awful.

Yes. I don’t know who Riefenstahl was but they look bloody awful.

She was a propagandist who was quite the thing in the 1930s, came up with the idea of lots of flags surrounding a figure of historical significance. I saw a documentary about her years ago and she stuck in my head, along with the flags.
I've just found out she lived until 2003, lawks, that was a surprise.

To be fair that's quite a lot more than the 246 people the 'reality runners' managed to muster up.

lcakethereforeIam · Yesterday 20:43

I can see the resemblance. The Pride one looks computer generated, I'm struggling to believe it's real. I think the effect would be the same with any mass display of identical flags. It's not the fault of the Progress flag.

But far less than those TRAs who could actually be bothered to do more than press a button on a keyboard, such is their distress 🙄

Perhaps they will get their moobs out and piss on Oxford St, or call for women to be raped with splintery rolling pins, hung, kicked, decapitated etc etc to show how really, really unsafe HP themed Christmas lights make them feel. Double 🙄

Well not really, because the reality runners could only muster up 600 people to even click a button on their keyboard to join.

ScrollingLeaves · Yesterday 21:05

AgentPidge · 09/10/2026 19:52

Yep. You couldn't make it up. I hope they don't give in. There must be millions more HP fans than there are people offended by JKR's views. Besides, it's probably all ready, and would be a right pain to change now. I wonder if there's a counter-petition to keep them?

There must be millions more HP fans than there are people offended by JKR's views.

Exactly.

And of course they aren’t ’unsafe’. No one will even be thinking of trans people when they see the lights. What narcissism.

I am astounded that people think this is anything other than a promotional opportunity funded by WB for the launch of the Harry Potter reboot. Money talks!

By golly, you know what? I think you're right. It's those dastardly PR companies whipping up publicity. Well done for spotting it when no-one else did. 🙄

Thank you Captain Obvious, do you only read your own post.

IwantToRetire · Yesterday 21:18

As posted earlier on thread, this is obviously a fake petition.

It is a way for the GLP to harvest email addresses of names of "idiots".

Given the number of staff it seems they employ, who even if all "low grade" they must have known the lights have nothing to do with the Mayor.

So GLP have achieved 2 if not 3 objectives
= harvested emails
= implicate the Mayor as being behind this
= got their name in the media - again

So if you have a compliant media happy to boost your PR stunt, you can find even more numpties to give you their emails and become your lap dog supporters.

Reread my post carefully.

Care to address the rest of said post btw, or is it simply too difficult for you to address the male violence and fetish stuff from men who are told no by women?
