Sadly, I’m not at all surprised by this story. It’s strangely worded though.

“You can almost guarantee that every woman that’s in the north of France has probably been raped along the journey.”

Nearly all women arriving on small boats have been raped, says Shabana Mahmood

Home secretary warns people traffickers will exploit asylum seekers because they decide who comes to the UK

In Ceuta women and unaccompanied children were being predated on by the locals (Spanish) and other migrants. In the very long journey most migrants take they will be extremely vulnerable to rape by the people smugglers, other migrants, random locals (there was a big issue with very young boy refugees in Italy being offered food for sex by local Italian men at one point), migrants recruited by the local police to push back other migrants (the Greeks did this. It does seem to filter for the worst people at the expense of the most vulnerable), and border guards themselves.

Don't forget that when the UK home office rolled out it's homes for Ukrainians scheme there was an influx of lovely British men wanting to offer homes to only young women. And early on reports of German brothels trying to recruit them (this is illegal sex trafficking). Because the routes for Ukrainian women/children were legal and regulated the UK government was able to crack down on this and change the rules on the homes scheme. It was easier for Ukrainian women and children to leave because of this which is why more Ukrainian refugees in the UK are women than other groups of refugees.

The current situation with boat crossings etc is horrendous and puts innocent people at risk while enriching smugglers and illegal gangs. But smugly trying to turn it into a political point along the lines of "see we told you male migrants are all bad people" assumes that all the rapes were committed by migrants. And I bet they weren't. It does provide a good reason for why the people taking this route are more likely to be male (though young boys are also preyed upon enroute. See my earlier point about Italy).

Excellent points.

Excellent points.

Not sure, it seems muddled.

Women and girls in Ceuta have been impacted by the border breech and the Ukrainian scheme is mostly women and dc and heavily vetted.

"Secure the borders and stop the crossings" how do you suggest this is done?

Put all the individuals that come to UK in "small" boats in tents in fields surrounded by razor wire and armed guards and supply some food twice a day.
No mobile phones, no free dosh, no 'right to roam' until they admit who they are and then ship them back to where they came from.
Then sit back and watch the crossings stop.

How does that contradict what I said though? The Ukrainian refugee scheme was majority women and girls and heavily vetted. It was also facilitated and regular (women and girls staying in hotels in Calais etc then travelling to the UK by ferry or plane to prearranged accomodation). That meant that when stories of men over 40 looking for much younger women tenants only came out the government was able to quickly change course. The implied threat was there (men looking to take advantage of vulnerable women) but because the women were travelling under a scheme facilitated by the government the threat was mitigared. Women and girls fleeing violence, war, rape and death in their homeland who don't have the option of a safe legal route are much more vulnerable to sexual exploitation every step of the way because there is less protection. No woman is traveling by irregular means for the fun of it.

The other point about the homes for Ukraine scheme is that it exposed indeed there are white (and other skin tones) British men willing to take advantage of desperate/vulnerable women just as there are likely men in every culture. Trying to use the horrendous abuse suffered by migrant women and girls as evidence that people from "other cultures" must be doing it and therefore uniquely dangerous ignores that.

This is such a disingenuous take. You understand how difficult it would be to make an accurate accounting of how many refugees we should take as reperations for our multitude of past (and present) sins?

That said, it would certainly be in the realm of around 300-400 million at the very least. And don't say we have no room to house this number of people, Cumbria, Northumberland and Devon are practically uninhabited relative to their square mileage of territory.

Lol. 😂 let’s just round it up to a billion and all housed, eligible for benefits, free NHS all at the dwindling tax payer’s expense.

The Ceuta situation and Ukrainian scheme both reinforce the fact that heavily vetted women and dc are safest.

And safer.

We used to have more safe routes than involved vetting and choosing the most vulnerable l. Now we don't. So women (and children and men) have to choose between risking death and rape in their own country/refugee camp or risking death and rape travelling somewhere else.

We used to have thousands in the back of lorries until there was public outcry over suffocation and it was clamped down on. They were not safe.

But if you want safe routes as below you’ll need to stop arrivals on shore or you’ll just get both.

Asylum seekers aren’t eligible for mainstream benefits.

Many visa types also don’t allow recourse to public funds. I employ people who don’t yet have LTR, and have yet to see any of them who can claim anything.

Refugees are, but make up 1.6% of UC claimants. So frankly, I think we have bigger home grown problems in terms of welfare.

You could have sex segregated tents (and security firm staff for the female ones),which would stop all the rapes for the women at least.

I think they already do this to be fair, they admit there's a risk housing women in with the men which is why the proposed centre at Piddington is all male. They seem to think that risk magically evaporates for the outnumbered women of Piddington though.

womendeserveequalhumanrights · 07/10/2026 13:42

And there shouldn't be any female staff that are unaccompanied for the male sites after Rhiannon Whyte's murder (RIP). One such obviously preventable murder is one too many.

So what. They receive other benefits for which the tax payer foots the bill.

PP wants to bring 300 million at least to the UK. This is obviously absurd.

@SleeplessInWherever Maybe no mainstream benefits but this is what they get -
What Asylum Support Includes

  • Housing: Free temporary accommodation (such as a house, flat, hostel, or B&B) provided on a no-choice basis anywhere in the UK.
  • Cash Support (ASPEN card): A standard living allowance loaded onto an ASPEN debit card:
  • £49.18 per week per person if living in self-catered accommodation or receiving subsistence-only support.
  • £9.95 per week per person if living in accommodation where meals are provided.
  • Extra Maternity and Baby Payments: Additional weekly cash support for pregnant women and young children:
  • Pregnant mothers: £5.25 per week
  • Babies under 1 year old: £9.50 per week (or £9.20 depending on exact guidance)
  • Children aged 1 to 3: £5.25 per week
  • A one-off £300 maternity grant (requires Form MAT B1)
  • Healthcare: Free NHS hospital treatment, GP access, free prescriptions, dental care, and eye tests.
  • Education: Mandatory free state school education for children aged 5 to 17, with potential access to free school meals.

GP Access, my fat aunt!
Here you need to wait a week to get an appointment and the nearest NHS dentist is 20 miles away and full up !
Then there is the cost of interpreters for all these visits and transport laid on ?
All paid for by UK taxpayer like me !

They’re not risking death in their own country. They’re economic migrants.

Smokeywater · 07/10/2026 14:30

So many asylum seekers lie about everything from which country they're from to what their age is, whether they're gay I would think it would be wise for a woman to claim she has been abused and raped either en route or in her home country it would raise her chances of being given asylum.

Wadsworthy · 07/10/2026 14:44

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/10/2026 16:00

I think she’s probably right.

Yup.

And this also accounts for the fact that there are far fewer illegal women migrants than men. The women & girls disappear along the way, I suspect, trafficked and prostituted into the sex trade.

The criminals who run the people-smuggling gangs are evil.

There's a FANTASTIC long-form interview of Ms Mahmood on the "Leading" podcast done by Alastair Campbell & Rory Stewart. I was wary of Ms Mahmood before this - religious, hard-line on illegal migrants etc, but she comes across as very genuine, very smart, and with a plan. She has integrity. It's really worth listening to.

Well, it's pretty much common knowledge that Eritrean and Afghan man are hugely over-represented in sex crime stats.

No they are not. You are still more likely to be abused by a White British Christian Anglo Saxon Protestant Colonial Right Wing Working Class Reform Voting England Flag Wearing man than men from any other backgrounds.

So really we should send 'our' men away in exchange for the refugees, we'll certainly be a safer country then.

Yes, and not surprising when you consider the attitudes to women and the state of women's rights (or lack of) in the countries they come from. Also, by their standards our justice system is soft which is another pull factor - both have capital punishment for certain crimes. Anyone who claims these undocumented men who think women have less rights than dogs coming a criminal route pose no more risk than other men in the UK to women and girls is either a few sandwiches short of a picnic or just isn't arguing in good faith.

And that's apart from the daily/weekly barrage of evidence of this type of man, who has come illegally, harming young girls in the uk. What about THEIR human rights?

Obviously as there are still more white men in the UK, your risk of being assaulted by a white man is still higher overall, but these Eritrean and Afghan illegal immigrants are - according to the data I've looked at - 14-20 times more likely to be a sex offender than men already here (legal immigrants - because they have checks - and people born here).

May I add any black lab owner to that?

womendeserveequalhumanrights · 07/10/2026 17:13

And it's a stupid argument to say that white men are more of a risk because if we already have so much risk from men already here, why add to it? Obviously only female refugees is what's needed for women's human rights.
