Sadly, I’m not at all surprised by this story. It’s strangely worded though.

“You can almost guarantee that every woman that’s in the north of France has probably been raped along the journey.”

Nearly all women arriving on small boats have been raped, says Shabana Mahmood

Home secretary warns people traffickers will exploit asylum seekers because they decide who comes to the UK

It's the exact opposite. You don't need a visa to get refugee status. What used to happen is that anyone could apply for asylum in any British embassy or consulate.

Under the refugee treaty, breaking civil law to enter a country, by whatever means, is not a bar to claiming refugee status. So you can either encourage illegal routes and harm to asylum seekers by blocking these paths, or reopen them. So safe and legal routes are literally the answer.

It also means that you don't get as many asylum seekers waiting for any answer in the UK - they stay in the country where they applied to the embassy while awaiting the result.

The reason there are small boats is simply because they think that providing sage and legal routes will increase the number of claims by making it hard for asylum seekers to claim. The prevalence rape, risk of drowning and the expense are what the system does for this purpose. It's inhuman.

The vast majority are likely economic migrants so would not be eligible for asylum unless they actively arrive here and then claim asylum

ToastSafeFromMothsAndDogs · 06/10/2026 11:24

Lots of European men saw all those Ukrainian women and children having to flee their country as a fantastic opportunity for sexual exploitation. That’s a big reason most countries put schemes into place to welcome and protect them.

We bombed/conquered/pillaged over there, that's why. And why cutting spending on aid is a remarkably idiotic thing to do if you pretend to want to curb immigration.

History is full of pillaging and invading.

England is not an exception here. Everyone has done it at some point.

Opting out of international laws is never a good step

Really? Most of the world is a misogynistic hell hole for women and in many countries they are treated as slaves, I'd much rather UK sovereignty on women's rights issues. Both the EU and the UN have written documents erasing the very concept of two sexes and thereby women's rights. The UN has allowed nations that kill women for showing their hair to chair committees on human rights.

UN aid agencies have agreed to expel pretty much all female HCPs from Afghanistan at the Taliban's request, which is implicitly supporting the Taliban's denial of any healthcare to females.

Our colonisation was the imposition of illegal immigration by us on those countries is the point.

That is what all countries do when they have wars and move in on each other's territory. There have been population 'swaps' and migrations all across the world within the last century as new countries have been formed and/or their boundaries re-drawn.

Just because Britain used to have an empire it doesn't mean it now has to accept unbounded, uncontrolled and/or illegal migration.

Bringemout · 06/10/2026 12:27

Given that women seem to somehow mysteriously die on some of these boats yeah we should be looking at the passengers. I remember that story of a man who raped a teenager and killed her in-front of her own mum whilst the boat was sinking, horrifying. Oh and that Afghan found with a Turkish girl he had kidnapped from a Belgium asylum centre.

I’m done, the men can take care of themselves somewhere else. I’m fine with accepting female refugees but no chain migration.

BrambleyHedgeAutumn · 06/10/2026 12:44

Mouldemort · 06/10/2026 09:41

It isn't about acknowledge the general level of risk women face, it's about misdirecting the blame for this to their fellow travellers rather than the traffickers.

The implication of the anti-refugee position is that refugees are more likely to commit rape, which is not true - in fact the men are likely to have been sexually abused, too.

Safe and legal routes reduce the risk to women.

And well done for shoehorning some transphobia in there to spice up the bigotry.

How do you know whether refugees are more, less or equally likely to commit rape? The government refuse to release that information, which is strange, as it would surely be a great way to debunk this right wing myth?

Exceptionalism that bequeathed us brexit isn't shared by the rest of the world. You can wish for only us to have the privilege of being immigrants but it will remain exactly that. A wish.

How can you assume it is a myth though?

It could just as easily be becaue they don't want to inflame violence by revealing the actual statistics. The same way, maybe, that the BBC and most mainstream media don't reveal the actual sex ( male) of a lot of criminals who have been arrested for sexual and crimes of violence, if they identify as 'women'. Because the facts don't support the 'be kind' narratives.

Opting out of treaties we don't like will do wonders for our ability to trade when other countries see we won't respect our obligations to something we signed up to. This is "somewhat important" because we've not been self-sufficient in food or goods for in the lifetime of anyone you've met and we've damaged our reputation enough in the last few years.

I'm not exactly sure what you are trying to say?

I'm not sure what Brexit has to do with anything. Many countries around the world are experienced this same issue....uncontrolled and illegal migration. It is a major issue everywhere. Also as various tribal and religious conflicts and wars rage on around the world there are also mass movements of displaced people - on every continent.

Once again, illegal migration and/or displacement due to war is not the same thing as legal immigration in which a country chooses who can enter and who can stay, and on what terms and conditions.

Mouldemort doesn’t have a clue but it sounds like the right sort of thing. Unsurprising given the poster’s other anti-woman stances.

The BBC report the names of almost all criminals that they write items about with pictures of the offender's. They don't explicitly state the sex of almost all those criminals simply because they aren't trans.

There are a few they don't identify, almost always because of their age and only because of their age.

It's not a conspiracy of silence, there just aren't that many trans people and a minority of them (like the rest of the population) commit crimes.

I'm saying it's extraordinarily arrogant to think we can behave in a way and not expect others to do the same.

Others go even further and suggest that as we stole huge amounts of wealth from other countries, we have an obligation to their survivors.

There have, in fact, been many instances in which the actual sex of the offender is not reported. It is disguised using 'pronouns'. If people were actually aware of the number of sexual crimes being committed by men with trans identities they would be quite shocked. That the narratives about " harmless" " victimised" " most oppressed" don't bear much resemblance to much of the reality on the ground.

Stop with this colonial/oppressor narrative. it is so one dimensional and as a result has no flexibility to actually consider reality. "Others" do exactly the same. All nations have boundaries and rules. If they don't they cease to exist. Every country, tribe or clan enforces its membership criteria and regulates behaviour in its territory.

As we know, a comparison of the census figures with the number of trans identified males in prison for sex offences shows that trans identified males are statistically more likely to be in prison due to being convicted of a sex offence than other men.

"cutting spending on aid is a remarkably idiotic thing to do if you pretend to want to curb immigration."

Why ?
Demand is infinite and resources are finite - so it's just common sense to me.

This is such a disingenuous take. You understand how difficult it would be to make an accurate accounting of how many refugees we should take as reperations for our multitude of past (and present) sins?

That said, it would certainly be in the realm of around 300-400 million at the very least. And don't say we have no room to house this number of people, Cumbria, Northumberland and Devon are practically uninhabited relative to their square mileage of territory.

I agree - but the hypocrisy is off the charts too. In fact it's just an Alice in wonderland way to abuse language and enforce those in the position of the oppressor nowadays, creating stupid situations that will actively harm people. There's a lot of talk of 'wealth' in this country but whilst the lanyard class (including politicians and civil servants) might still have it, the working class are relying on foodbanks and unable to feed and clothe their kids in this country. In fact, I see very little evidence that the lanyard classes won't just run this country into the ground until no-one wants to move here. It's already happened with many former legal immigrants, who came, worked, made money and have now gone home where their quality of life is now better as their home country has had massive economic growth relative to the UK.

The per capita GDP growth of the UK has plummeted relative to other countries.

No-one seems to care much about actual slavery happening now either even when they're demanding 'reparations' from decades or centuries ago e.g. many of the grooming gang victims were essentially slaves. There is evidence some children were trafficked abroad. Fuck all attempt to look into that or even provide counselling and trauma support to those who survived long enough to get out and make a life for themselves, let alone 'reparations'. No, they're shut down, ignored or punished by the state for speaking the truth, and for those who got their paedophile rapists jailed, their abusers are let out of prison early and protected and their bills paid by the state.

It's pretty clear to see who's the most 'oppressed' in reality, with real world harms, and no one gives a tiny fuck.

Agree with this. And I know some people are rich enough that they feel protected from the risks, but simply put male asylum seekers are far higher risk to the local population than female asylum seekers.

I know it would be a novelty but a government SHOULD also consider the safety of its existing population when protecting borders.

"Secure the borders and stop the crossings" how do you suggest this is done?

Remove the incentive for one. They could be very easily stopped from reaching Uk, the government is shipping them in and we need to ask why.
