Stephen King's response to Rowling on sex and gender discussions

Stephen King was asked a simple question - are trans women women? - and when he said yes, one of the most wealthy writers in the world turned on him.

J.K. Rowling had just publicly showered him with praise. Within hours of his answer, she deleted it and, in King's words, "sorta blocked" him.

King is one of the most famous novelists alive, and he didn't walk it back or cast himself as the victim. He said plainly that nobody had cancelled Rowling - he just thought she was wrong. He turns 79 today, still saying it.

He could have kept the friend and stayed quiet. He said yes instead.

Guess what @Choppingwoodcarryingwater

Humans STILL can’t change sex.

And no one is buying your attempts to change the definition of sex 🙄

I swear ChoppingGoodGretelNorthernBaileyHowseIcelandicnights has been making the same argument for the better part of a year now and it's still as nonsensical and incoherent as ever.

No, that does not what legitimate aim means. You seem to be making it up as you go to suit your biases.

Nope. You don’t understand the law.

There is no situation where a legitimate aim would be answered by a group based on ‘gender identity.’

You can have single sex provision or unisex provision. Those are the options.

TheKeatingFive · 03/10/2026 23:22

How does it do that?

She deleted praise of something for sticking up with her because she later discovered he didn't agree with her on one singular issue. But meanwhile she's spent years taking potshots at people for daring to disagree with her.

the right to identity (self identification)

Whenyou say this is a right, what do you mean?

People often seem to throw the word 'rights' about with little concept of what right, according to whom, for what purposes?

When people talk about their 'rights' it often seems to mean 'a thing that I think i should be allowed to do'.

Its almost as if its just a way to make their wants seem more legitimate.

There is no 'right' to pretend to be the opposite sex.

The right to a belief. As in the right not to be discriminated against for your political or religious beliefs would be examples.

solerolover · 03/10/2026 23:27

Didn't JKR and King have some kind of playful back and forth banter last year or something like that?

She deleted a tweet. That is allowed in this free world of ours. Move on

God so much barrel scraping tonight. wtf is wrong with people?

CassOle · 03/10/2026 23:29

Seriously, a deleted tweet is not a big deal. He's dealt with worse (and madder) stuff.

You can believe what you want.

You don’t have any rights to force others to collude with your beliefs when they have no factual basis

Sex IS reproductive trait.

That’s literally what sex is.

I don’t know what your point has to do with the price of fish - or with the arguments that actually-existing trans activists have been making, or the orthodoxy current when King made his very silly intervention.

Or indeed with the actual statement he agreed with.

It was “trans women are women” - not “trans women are men who try to mimic stereotypical feminine behaviour as understood in a specific but not universal cultural context which may be subject to change over time” or even “trans women are men who believe they have feminine gender, whatever they mean by that”.

Edited

'Trans women are women' is just short hand for trans women are a sub category of women as a result of social associations.

Social associations are a fact. Sorry reality hurts your feelings.

"Associations" mmm hmmmm....

Howse that?

Dudes with boobs are still men.

Choppingwoodcarryingwater · 03/10/2026 23:33

SabrinaThwaite · 03/10/2026 23:19

Nope. Definitions of male and female are fixed. And in the UK, as clarified in law, a woman is an adult human female.

And no, a significant proportion of the UK general public have no idea that a trans woman is a male.

The Telegraph in 2023: A third of Britons don’t know that transgender women were born male.

https://archive.ph/kg6QU

It’s almost like the language is designed to
obfuscate.

So you don't know what 'trans woman' means?

You walked straight into that one…

Choppingwoodcarryingwater · 03/10/2026 23:31

Social associations are a fact. Sorry reality hurts your feelings.

By its very nature an association is subjective.

So not what you actually claimed happened? How bizarre that you can't just admit you were wrong and move on, instead you must keep arguing. Very odd behaviour.

At least bring something new along with your new name

The right to a belief. As in the right not to be discriminated against for your political or religious beliefs would be examples.

You have a right to believe any kind of daftness that appeals to you.

It only becomes a protected belief if it meets Grainger criteria. Genderist belief has never been tested. GC beliefs have & passed.

I suspect Genderism would not qualify, because the criteria include being internally consistent (eg using sex & gender as synonyms & at the same time claiming they’re different), & don't infringe the rights of others.

And what you cannot do is impose your beliefs on others. A flat earther can’t complain if the Royal Geographic Society won’t employ them - or an airline won’t let them fly a plane.

And of course, every who disagrees back at JKR has shown her nothing but courtesy, decorum and good will. No death threats or anything.

The word 'trans' has ubiquitous understanding in modern culture. Deal with it.

They did.

About JKR giving the square root of fuck all.

King thought that it should be fuck all squared.

Both are right (I think) but I prefer the square root of fuck all meaning an infinitesimal amount of fucks given.

Grainger criteria applies exclusively to philosophical or religious beliefs. Under the UK EA gender/sex is already protected as its own standalone characteristic ("sex" or "gender reassignment") and does not need to satisfy these criteria.

Actually no it hasn’t, there have been substantial issues with people understanding it in surveys and so on.
