Afghan women may be offered "safe route" to resettle in the UK as refugees

Shabana Mahmood has announced the reopening of a scheme to resettle refugees in the UK, as she hopes that offering "safe and legal" routes will deter small boat crossings.

The home secretary said the UK wants to "live up to our international obligations" by helping those who are fleeing war and persecution, but the process must be "capped and controlled".

The Home Office said the UK Resettlement Scheme (UKRS) will reopen immediately and expects that around 25% of arrivals will be Afghan women and girls and Palestinians.

The Home Office expects arrivals to increase to the "low thousands" as levels of illegal migration fall.

A cap will be set for each year although details of the number have yet to be provided.

People arriving in Britain under the safe and legal routes will be be put on a five-year path to permanent settlement.

Personally I think the government needs to deal with the issue of the unlawful immigration of 1000s of men before they start opening up lawful routes to selected groups. They've entirely lost the trust of the public on this issue. Also they need to start having clear priorities of who is eligible to claim asylum (no men or older boys) and a cap.

GreaterWaterBoatman · 01/10/2026 10:43

Why just Afghan women though? What about Sudanese civilians? Christians in Nigeria? Yazidis? The entire population of Kiev? Street children across India? Where do you stop?

There are pathways for resettlement. There are thresholds that must be met before a person can be granted refugee status. I'm sorry you didn't know this.

Come off it. You know full well that currently this is a rubber stamping exercise.

You seem unaware that millions have entered the country and remain here regardless of any so-called vetting or threshold. Not all on boats either - some are bought in by vape shops or similar sponsoring skill workers visa for many many more ‘employees’ than they ever actually have.

GreaterWaterBoatman · 01/10/2026 10:50

Even the UN has accused the Uk of having an out of control system. And estimates suggest less than 1% have any real case. The rest still stay though. Many ‘refugees’ go back to the countries they supposedly flee from on holiday too.

These men will lie about absolutely anything.
Being gay.
Being a child.
Being a Christian.
Being a father.
Being at risk in their country of origin.

When I saw the footage the other day with a man who handed the baby he was carrying to rescuers because he couldn't get on the boat but then proceeded to climb on the boat without it anyway I though holy shit are they now stealing babies to bolster their claims.

I just can't comprehend how anyone can look at the current situation and not feel an enormous sense of boding. It's not good.

Well it does seem particularly unfair that the default of refusal to Afghani refugers requesting asylum includes women. In my opinion women fleeing Afghanistan should have a route to claim asylum and it should not be a prohibitively difficult route . So much as I disagree with a lot that Shabana Mahmood says and does, I think this makes a lot of sense to me.

Also I'm never sure of what the point is of saying "illegal" arrivals should not be allowed to claim refugee status, when there are no available legal ways to do this at the moment

Im not sure all of the arrivals have a genuine claim for asylum so the legal route is a moot point as they wouldn't be eligible.

Pakistan is deporting women’s rights activists back to Afghanistan. To see people on a feminist board cheering this on is depressing to say the least.

Who is cheering it on?

You seem unaware of the difference between legal and illegal routes.

What is the practical difference?

If you claim you need to import skilled workers for a vape shop then that is untrue, and if you import 50 workers claiming they are needed for a tiny shop then that is untrue too. So those people have also entered the country illegally through fraud.

Skilled worker visas are not asylum and resettlement programmes.

and? It abused through fraud just like the asylum and resettlement programmes. Only one in a hundred applying for asylum have a genuine case barely anyone is made to leave.

Providing the women are not then able to bring in any number of men then great - but I can absolutely see that women could be used as a commodity by men here.

They are allowed to bring male relatives - see the Palestinian asylum seeker whom a court ruled was allowed to bring in 16 relatives including cousins and their families. The Home Office had refused this and a court overruled.

Edited

Only 4% of failed applicants are ever returned home. The rest stay despite having their claims denied.

One of my students went back to Afghanistan for a holiday this summer. I asked if she was safe to do so but she wasn't worried because a family member is in the Taliban. I'm not sure which part she was visiting. How many women are they planning on resettling here? We're busting at the seams. We can't say yes to everyone.
