Afghan women may be offered "safe route" to resettle in the UK as refugees

Shabana Mahmood has announced the reopening of a scheme to resettle refugees in the UK, as she hopes that offering "safe and legal" routes will deter small boat crossings.

The home secretary said the UK wants to "live up to our international obligations" by helping those who are fleeing war and persecution, but the process must be "capped and controlled".

The Home Office said the UK Resettlement Scheme (UKRS) will reopen immediately and expects that around 25% of arrivals will be Afghan women and girls and Palestinians.

The Home Office expects arrivals to increase to the "low thousands" as levels of illegal migration fall.

A cap will be set for each year although details of the number have yet to be provided.

People arriving in Britain under the safe and legal routes will be be put on a five-year path to permanent settlement.

Ive honestly given up. Labour seem to have a death wish for this country and it's all to shore up the far left base. They are mad. I don't say that lightly as I appreciate politically some sides have different views to others. But I see no positives only negatives with these two policies. It's like we have taken responsibility for global issues at our own expense and to our own destruction.

I think the rationale is that a legal route will reduce net immigration
Why?

I'm no expert, but basically anyone arriving illegally would be sent back and refused right to remain, while people arriving legally would have the right to make an application to stay and may be granted leave.

Wr have legal obligations under international law.

My feeling is that everything needs reassessed as geopolitics are in great upheaval and are likely to shift further as wars over resources continue and climate issues worsen.

Times are changing.

The family visa option is still an option.

Sausagenbacon · 29/09/2026 08:39

Family reunion has been suspended.
That's interesting.
But, as members of the EHRC (sorry, I have probably got that wrong) surely we have no ability, as a country, to make that policy stick?
I would love to be wrong.

Which is much stricter and includes things like checks on criminal convictions (a thing that people always claim they want).

i Am unsure. Lots of countries are terrible to live in but is it really realistic to think we can take in everyone?

We also need to stop believing the “we can’t afford foreign aid” narrative and actually look at the knock on role it plays in reducing migration.

Other countries manage restrictions. The U.K. seems to have had a stream of politicians that have made the electorate think we can’t do anything without some kind of outside interference preventing us.

Sausagenbacon · 29/09/2026 08:47

Is it because they ignore the EHRC (the European ones) and we feel bound to obey it?

It won't stop people bringing over huge numbers of people. The recent UN report highlighted the chaos of the current asylum system so it's almost a guarantee those checks won't be done properly, if at all.

I think we also need to reassess our status and abilities globally. The UK was a world power; we are small fry these days. Relatively wealthy for some citizens, but that too is changing. And its not fair to place all the burdens of assimilating and supporting immigrants on those with least resources, and maligning them as intolerant when they protest.

Absolutely not. Parts of the UK are changed beyond any recognition of British life. Little integration, insistence on outdated cultural practices that have no place in Western culture, and the left are kowtowing as it builds up their voter base. My closest friend is the daughter of an immigrant, and grew up with an understanding that integration into your host country is vital.

I agree up to a point. There are agitators who stir up protest so it isn’t just about organic protests about limited resources. I’d rather see fewer people entering with more resource - language lessons, intensive support, training where necessary- given to those granted refugee status.

Agree. If international law is no longer working for us as a country and only benefits non citizens then either the law, drafted for a different time, needs to change or we need to leave the bodies that are damaging us. The first duty of a state is to it's own citizens.

Smoke and mirrors. Highest numbers of illegals coming across on the boats are from Eritrea, Sudan, Somalia, Iran & Afghanistan. And let’s not forget they are mostly men.

Everyone knows that but the government has run out of ideas to stop the boats so Mahmood is hoping someone will buy this.

Small boat arrivals have decreased. This is a pretty balanced explanation of why that may be so and what to look out for in future figures.

https://migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk/resources/commentaries/qa-why-have-small-boat-arrivals-declined-in-2026/

Small boat arrivals haven't decreased. Year to date, they have decreased compared with 2026 but remain higher than before Labour came to power - that's not including the number of boats that arrived without detection, which is not known and could be significant. There were 1,655 documented arrivals last week alone.

Providing the women are not then able to bring in any number of men then great - but I can absolutely see that women could be used as a commodity by men here.

I agree. Women and children will bring extended family.

Signalbox · 29/09/2026 10:44

The Gazan part of this policy is insane. It will be impossible to properly vet Gazan refugees before bringing them here. Gazans are a demonstrably radicalised population and allowing them into the UK where we have a pre existing Jewish community is just reckless imo. Jew hatred in this country is already at record levels. This is completely against Britain's interests and is likely to further worsen already fraying social tensions.

Also the idea that this will reduce the number of boat crossings if for the birds.

Whenthecriwdsayno · 29/09/2026 10:44

All this Palestinian hate on a thread about Afghani women. Piss off

Dmsandfloatydress · 29/09/2026 10:47

I would happily personally sponsor an afghan woman alone or with a daughter just like we did for the ukranians , as long as there is no chance they can bring any male relatives at all. I personally have all the recources to help them into work, education and to assist them in becoming self sufficient as long as they were willing to fully integrate and adapt to this society. They are best placed to learn about this country by living, for some time, with a British family.

Yes, year to date they have decreased. You'd expect some lag after a change in government to allow for changes in policy. As the link says, we'll see whether that decrease in numbers continues. Not sure why you're so sad that they have decreased this year and may continue to do so.

Good....Afghanistan is a hell hole for women.

And thousands of their men are arriving each week to welcome them.
