Afghan women may be offered "safe route" to resettle in the UK as refugees

Shabana Mahmood has announced the reopening of a scheme to resettle refugees in the UK, as she hopes that offering "safe and legal" routes will deter small boat crossings.

The home secretary said the UK wants to "live up to our international obligations" by helping those who are fleeing war and persecution, but the process must be "capped and controlled".

The Home Office said the UK Resettlement Scheme (UKRS) will reopen immediately and expects that around 25% of arrivals will be Afghan women and girls and Palestinians.

The Home Office expects arrivals to increase to the "low thousands" as levels of illegal migration fall.

A cap will be set for each year although details of the number have yet to be provided.

People arriving in Britain under the safe and legal routes will be be put on a five-year path to permanent settlement.

Yes, year to date they have decreased. You'd expect some lag after a change in government to allow for changes in policy. As the link says, we'll see whether that decrease in numbers continues. Not sure why you're so sad that they have decreased this year and may continue to do so.

I'm not sad. I'm providing the context that Labour soundbytes miss. Transparency is essential. The question that still needs to be answered is why numbers soared from 29,000 in 2023 to 48,000 in 2025 when Labour was elected on a manifesto that pledged to 'stop the boats' and 'smash the gangs'. In reality, they've done neither. What I am sad and shocked about is the UN report that highlights the failing of the asylum system under Labour - it makes for a truly horrifying read.

Family reunion has been suspended.
That's interesting.
But, as members of the EHRC (sorry, I have probably got that wrong) surely we have no ability, as a country, to make that policy stick?
I would love to be wrong.

There are detogations in human rights legislation, if the will is there. HRA 1998 is online to read I think.

I’m not sure that afghan women who are in the most dire need will have access to this. I know someone pointed out that some afghan womens charities are taliban fronts. As long as it doesn’t include men joining I’m happy to host afghan women so at least women from non insane families may have a way out.

And thousands of their men are arriving each week to welcome them.

Yes you have to wonder if by the time any Afghani women arrive here they will be free to take advantage of the freedom currently available to many women in the UK or if a pre-existing population of un-assimilated Afghani men will be able to prevent that from happening. Will we be importing the Burkha into the UK along with the women and then pretend it's an optional clothing choice?

The linked information isn't a 'Labour soundbyte [sic]'. It's a pretty comprehensive look at all the factors that may have led to the decrease in numbers posted in response to your claim that "the government has run out of ideas to stop the boats". There are policies in place, some of which appear to have impacted numbers.

The soundbyte refers to the '46% decrease' which is frequently parroted on here. We'll agree to differ on whether the government has run out of ideas.

As it is a HUGE male majority coming from a variety of countries arriving in the boats, I am failing to see how this will stop the illegal crossings?

Me neither. I have been wanting us as a country to support Afghani women for ages, so that is good. But Palestinians - women or all?

WaterThyme · 29/09/2026 11:40

Afghan women and girls live in shocking deprivation. No education, no freedom of movement, forced to cover themselves completely even in their own homes if observable from outside.

Until the Taliban took over Afghan women could work. As judges, lawyers, reporters, doctors, midwives, teachers and more. Now they can’t. And they can’t train either, so women are increasingly dying in childbirth.

if there is to be any hope for a better future for Afghan women, helping some of them to be in a position to challenge the regime and play a strong role in changing it is crucial.

HettyTagliatelli · 29/09/2026 07:40

Considering the mess we left in Afghanistan after our invasion and everything this country has done to harm the Palestinians since WW2, offering their women somewhere safe to go is the least we should be doing.

I mean we fucked up a lot of places for a lot of people (even men)

iwishitwouldstartraining · 29/09/2026 12:05

lifeturnsonadime · 28/09/2026 21:59

Why the cap on numbers though? These women absolutely should be allowed to leave the regime they are living under.

I assume because there are 20 million women living in Afghanistan, and all of them are living under a brutal oppressive regime that deprives them of their human rights.

Failing of the asylum system under labour? They have only been in power for a couple of years.

Isn't it more pragmatic to accept that this is a difficult problem to solve and both Conservative and Labour governments have struggled? Tribalism just avoids responsibility.

Yes, under Labour. I would suggest you read the report before commenting.

Shame they cancelled Rwanda without an effective replacement. Ironically a Rwanda type scheme seems to be the type of solution they well have to end up using.

Which just shows why it's more important to look at solutions than to demonise policies because the wrong people are proposing them.

It will be very interesting to see what happens now there is the new EU legislation allowing member states to establish return hubs in third countries.

You seem to be suggesting that the problem is the Labour government. If the problem is the Labour government, you need to make a comparison to previous governments.

zoeslim · 29/09/2026 12:29

bumblingbovine49 · 28/09/2026 21:48

Well it does seem particularly unfair that the default of refusal to Afghani refugers requesting asylum includes women. In my opinion women fleeing Afghanistan should have a route to claim asylum and it should not be a prohibitively difficult route . So much as I disagree with a lot that Shabana Mahmood says and does, I think this makes a lot of sense to me.

Also I'm never sure of what the point is of saying "illegal" arrivals should not be allowed to claim refugee status, when there are no available legal ways to do this at the moment

yeah I really want to pay MORE TAX
Let us build houses every where for everyone

OR they could go to a nearby ,muslim nation with their own culture maybe ?

Which is much stricter and includes things like checks on criminal convictions (a thing that people always claim they want).

How many men would have criminal convictions for rape of women, domestic violence offences etc in Afghanistan? I suspect none. I doubt they have reliable criminal records checks and even if they did the chances of a raped woman being convicted for committing adultery is much higher than her attacker ever getting a criminal conviction. I agree the grounds for granting asylum to Afghan women should be that it's them and their children only. If they want their husband/father/cousin etc then sorry no. If male, under 11 only. Palestinians unfortunately have proven to cause major problems in any country they are given asylum.

There’s always an objection isn’t there?

”We don’t understand why all the asylum seekers are men”
”Here’s a scheme aimed at women”
”Not like that”

”There are no checks for criminal records”
”Here’s a system that includes (among other things) criminal record checks”
”Not like that”
