Welcome to The Bluestocking, the best (perhaps only) online women's pub. Nothing in the food or drink can harm you, everything is served by a very enthusiastic crew of gerbils, who enjoy doing this and other interesting things. Any curious menfolk are welcome at the Staunch Ally down the road.

I always think that women in really long marriages are mostly very happy, (though some might be in controlling relationships and haven't been able to get out). And I congratulate them for meeting that rare creature, an emotionally intelligent and supportive man.

And I am through to the next stage of the application process. Unusually they haven't chosen a second candidate to go through as they have one more person to interview on Friday. So that must mean I'm the favourite, right? Because they didn't wait to tell me?

It's on Monday at 10am, meeting the staff and some other people online.

Maud has offered her skills as a stylist for the next stage. She can be at yours (with her bags, enough for a long stay, you've been warned) in an hour. Just say the word.

She reckons you'd look great in a bonnet.

Well hello fellow Stockingers! The last white transit van carrying the last tradesperson has disappeared over the horizon, I am feeling a lot better than I did the other day, so I can now catch up with what's going on at the BlueySmile

I was so far behind that I got a pen and paper and jotted down who needed Flowers and for what, and gosh it's a long list - let's see what I've caught up on

WAW, Inky, Deano [recovering now I think] with lurgy-variants, Errol and Magpie with allergies and, in M's case, bites, Damson recovering from a cataract op, Cher with a bad back, AsWith having to have her head glue back on together...
did I miss anybody?
Flowers and speedy recover to all x

Myrtle has another stage of a job interviewSmile but also <consults notes> a teledermatology - not taxidermatology, fortunately!- apptHmm, I hope both go very well!

Boily wins the contest for 'most things crossed for Myrtle', but there's a stewards' enquiry about eligibility, level playing fields, number of limbs etc...

The gerbils have escaped😀The gerbils have escaped😧

Fred is a semi-sentient marshmallow.

LordEmsworthsGirlfriend has appeared but I have to go back to see when and where, but appears to also have The Lurgy?

beekoala has also been in da house, but I can't recall her state of health -lurgy-free, I hope, bee?

The Devil Wears Prada. Boily wears Primark.

When Eva Marie Saint RIP gets to heaven, I wonder will the Blessed Virgin Mary have a word with her about why she put the 'saint' after 'Marie', was it for the avoidance of confusion between them?

If I've missed anything I'm sure the Tibetan pikas will fill me in on all the gossip!

PastaAllaNorma · 07/10/2026 15:41

I've spent the bulk of today cooking, with a bit of Strike and Ellacott while things simmered.

I think I'd go for alternating nail colours. Orange tractor and John Deere wheels, maybe, Cher?

Everything crossed for Myrtle.

For all the poorly Bluestockingers, I did make a lot of soup today. If a gerbil is free to collect it from my kitchen, I can send you each a tub of soup to get you on the mend.

It's not my usual style, but I can see why Maud likes them...

Maud can stay for as long as the Walrus tolerates her, which will be about 24 hours. Then he will be very huffy and ignore her completely.

Fred is a semi-sentient marshmallow. I want that on a Tshirt! (in fact, I want Fred) 😻

Yay Myrtle! You Go Girl (are we still saying that?)

Tibetan pikas: good as watch-Pikas in case someone nasty comes around the Bluestocking (nice "barking" capabilities), but can we put up with all the incessant squeaking? They do squeak a lot, don't they?

I love your updates so much @MarieDeGournay 😍

The teledermatology appointment was lovely. A very nice young woman who studied Film and Photography for her degree, and then a post-graduate qualification in Medical Photography took lots of pictures of an old scar on my shoulder with a very fancy super HD camera - Glossy would probably be envious.

Then she took more pictures with a camera with a flat lens of glass on the scar itself - apparently this magnifies the dermis and epidermis and the doctors can see the blood vessels and pigment and lots of other things. They will check the images and send me a letter telling me whether it is skin cancer or a keloid scar. It is not skin cancer, it is a keloid scar, but they will check and say for definite. If it is skin cancer (it isn't, honestly) they will cut it out later and it won't kill me.

Also the next stage isn't really an interview, it's a Meet the Team thing. I'm sure they might have an opinion on me but I'm also sure that even if they think that I'm a bit scary and intimidating, (I am MyrtleLion after all), the people making the decision won't let that bother them. I've already been told that there has been significant upheaval recently and they need someone to come in and be a firm hand. Right up my street really.

Thank you all for your good wishes. I notice that JK Rowling has said nothing as usual. No wishing me good luck for yesterday's interview and no congratulations on getting this far. It's par for the course, as far as JKR's concerned, but you'd think she would make an effort.

WearyAuldWumman · 07/10/2026 16:52

I'm assuming that you've seen the social media complaints about JKR not commenting on the Cornell case? Aye. Blame the woman who only funded a centre to help rape victims.

Yes, there is a superb thread here: http://mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/5585744-things-jk-rowling-has-shamefully-refused-to-comment-on

It explains exactly what JKR has refused to comment on. Including my job interview and progression to the next stage. I believe she let @Boiledbeetle snuggle up to her cat and fall asleep without putting a blanket over her, so Boily woke up cold.

JKR is just so thoughtless.

THINGS JK ROWLING HAS SHAMEFULLY REFUSED TO COMMENT ON | Mumsnet

There's been a spate of threads recently about things JK Rowling has ^shamefully^ failed to comment on. Wouldn't it be easier to put them all in a sin...

That should be enough time. She's in a huff as she got caught up in the "who the Fuck has thrown up on my laptop???!!!!!????" saga in the middle of the night.

To be fair, it was 3 am, I hadn't checked the cctv. And there was a fur ball.

She's annoyed that I momentarily relegated her to "animals that would do that" in the house.

No amount of battenberg will bring her down off the "I'm leaving you" ledge. Usually she'd stomp off to androids, but she's lost her key.

Luckily I have a bag I can crawl in to next time it happens.

Did JKR give it to me or even compliment me on it? Of course she didn't!

It was an interesting reminder that America, unlike most of the English-speaking world, do not have strict sub judice rules, and can't understand why those of us from countries that do instinctively conform to them.

Well she can definitely come and stay overnight. I have no other animals, but I'm sure my DSD would love to have cuddles.

You might want to let her know that there is no cake of any type whatsoever in the house. And if there were, it would not be Battenburg as I don't like marzipan.

But we can go for a walk by the river to feed the swans and look at the cows in the meadow, and then come home and try on bonnets.

And she can read the next chapter of Gosie before anyone else.

Chapter 60 is next.

It's that old freedom of the press and freedom of speech thang. Contempt, as I understand it, is under a different law, but applies mainly after a trial has started (I think).

60. The Services

In which Gimbal counts…

On the far side of the car park stood a long, low building lit from end to end, with a red canopy outside it saying CIRCLE in white lettering and a red K in a white circle.

“It’ll be warm in there,” said Gimbal.

The gerbils walked towards it.

Outside the doors was a row of picnic tables with the remains of other people’s dinner. Graphic checked each one before anyone touched anything. She walked past the first table shaking her head. A half-eaten sandwich lying on a paper bag and a carton of cold chips were on the second table and a torn sachet containing something sweet and an opened bottle of water were on the third.

“These ones,” said Graphic.

They ate the chips and the sandwich, squeezed the contents of the sachet onto the empty chip carton, and tipped the bottle very carefully between the three of them.

“We’re in Sweden,” said Griffin.

“How do you know?” asked Gimbal.

Griffin held up the paper bag. The writing on it had a small circle over the letter a. “This is the same as Pernilla Ågren’s name and Umeå.”

“But how will Gosie and Hedgehog find us in Sweden? They think we’re in the crate, so that’s what they’ll be looking for,” said Graphic. “They won’t be looking for us at a motorway services.”

Gimbal was looking at the car park.

She had counted the vans in the car park as they crossed it. Four were bright turquoise with postnord written on their sides in white. Two lime green vans had the word bring on the side. Another van was white, with DB in red letters in a box, then SCHENKER in black capitals. A second van just like it pulled in while they were eating.

“The blue vans are all the same,” said Gimbal. “And the green ones. And the white ones. There are four blue ones. If there was one grey van with KS on it, there’ll be another one eventually.”

“We should wait here and watch for it,” said Griffin.

“It’s cold out here, though,” said Gimbal.

“The courier wore a pale grey fleece,” said Graphic. “It was the same colour as the van and had KS in white at the top of the sleeves. She was wearing it when she got out.”

“But not when I saw her at the back of the van,” said Gimbal. “She must have jumped out to take it off, then walked round to the passenger side and put it on the seat. Then she walked round the back.”

“It was very warm in that van,” said Griffin. “If she was hot, she would take off the fleece.”

“And she had been driving a long time,” said Gimbal. “She would have wanted to stretch her legs.”

“Could we wait inside and wait for someone in the same fleece?” asked Graphic.

They considered this.

“That is a good plan,” said Griffin.

They all agreed.

All three of them slipped into the services building and found a space under a bench by the big glass window, where they could see both the doors and the car park.

Over the next hour Gimbal counted grey fleeces.

“One,” she said, at a quarter to eleven. “No. That’s a wolf on the front.”

“Two,” she said, at twenty-five past eleven. It was a man.

“Does a man count?” asked Graphic.

“His fleece is grey,” said Gimbal. “But he doesn’t have the letters.”

At ten to midnight a woman came in with white on her sleeve and all three of them sat up and then slumped down. It was a logo of a skier, not writing. Gimbal counted her anyway.

At three minutes past midnight the doors opened, and a woman came in wearing a pale grey fleece. On the top of each sleeve, small and white, were two letters. KS. She went straight to the toilets.

The gerbils ran outside before she came out of the loos. The grey van stood at the end of the row, lights off, ticking as it cooled, and they sat in a line in the dark beside the driver’s door.

They had to wait eleven minutes before the courier came out of the doors, with a cardboard cup in one hand and her keys in the other. The lock gave a short beep and as the door swung open the three of them scurried up past the driver’s seat and into the back of the van, where it smelled of cardboard and was dark and warm. Within minutes they had curled up together and fallen asleep.

The gerbils were woken by light coming in through the back doors. Two voices spoke in Swedish, and they could see the boxes being moved out of the van one at a time.

“Where are we?” asked Graphic.

Griffin looked out of the doors and saw that it was still dark outside. The van had backed up to a pale grey building, and the light was coming from an open roller door leading to a loading area. Above the door were white letters saying KS.

A woman in a grey jacket was carrying boxes in through the roller door and coming back for more.

“We’re at a KS depot,” said Griffin.

Gimbal looked at the lit doorway. “Then we should get out.”

All three of them left the van by the open back doors and ran over to the building and into the depot. It was one long room with a concrete floor, full of cages and pallets, and a line of unmoving steel rollers.

At the far end, past the last pallet, sat Kitty.

Please PM me with the magic of BIGLY words (and or upside down or backwards words if you were feeling particularly instructive) if you wouldn't mind. I'd like to know how to do it.

Boily, that's downright disturbing.

JKR gets a pass from me today, because the sun came out just as I was due to do some chores outside, and I gather she arranged it.
