Welcome to The Bluestocking, the best (perhaps only) online women's pub. Nothing in the food or drink can harm you, everything is served by a very enthusiastic crew of gerbils, who enjoy doing this and other interesting things. Any curious menfolk are welcome at the Staunch Ally down the road.

Bore da!

Drizzling again. Waiting for a package. Not cleaning windows. Making more coffee. Searching for an aerobic step online. Or a treadmill. Bran flakes for breakfast. And developing a cough. My life is so exciting.

Did I mention waiting for a package? And that it's drizzling?

At least I have that very stern picture of Kitty to look at from time to time, from the Other Thread, to cheer me up! 💜

Kitty was squatting on her back paws to wash her belly earlier & that was unbearably cute, but I didn’t get a photo. She looked like something out of Blackberry Farm or Beatrix Potter.

oh sob, Eva Marie Saint has died. Only 102.

I feel a need to watch North by Northwest.

Was that the one with the plane?

Not only a beautiful woman and an excellent actor, but she stayed married to her husband for 65 years until his death.

I'm sure my back will get better but in the meantime I'm a bit fed up.

So, in the interests of morale boosting, what tractor colour should I order for my nails?

Valtra. It' a wonderful metallic red.
Someone mentioned recently that my toenails looked very glamorous.

This was quite a turn up for the books given that 'rustic practicality' is my usual vibe.

So thank you Magpie, who posted the link.

Chersfrozenface · 07/10/2026 12:35

I have found the link for the Valtra red.

I have also seen mention of New Holland blue. And I may look for versions of vintage Fordson blues and greens.

I always think that women in really long marriages are mostly very happy, (though some might be in controlling relationships and haven't been able to get out). And I congratulate them for meeting that rare creature, an emotionally intelligent and supportive man.

And I am through to the next stage of the application process. Unusually they haven't chosen a second candidate to go through as they have one more person to interview on Friday. So that must mean I'm the favourite, right? Because they didn't wait to tell me?

It's on Monday at 10am, meeting the staff and some other people online.

EmpressaurusKitty · 07/10/2026 13:09

That’s fantastic Myrtle!

It sounds very positive to me. Hurray!

All the Bluestocking support team and I will have everything possible crossed for you, fingers, toes, paws and so on. It may affect service for a while but I’m sure nobody will mind.

Oh, that does sound very promising, Myrtle.Well done! I'll have everything crossed for you on Monday, which will make cooking for our family visitors a bit of a challenge. 😉

I was thinking particularly of the achievement of a Hollywood marriage lasting as long as this, especially having married in their mid-20s.

You can uncross things to make dinner, I don't mind (just recross them asap afterwards, please 😂

I agree, to marry in your 20s and stay married in Hollywood is a feat. And I always appreciated Paul Newman's remark that he didn't want burgers because he had steak at home.

MyrtleLion · 07/10/2026 13:23

Gossiping Tibetan pikas. We must get some for the Bluestocking. They will know everything.

Great news @MyrtleLion! Best of luck for Monday.

Boiledbeetle · 07/10/2026 13:40

I've just been to Primark.

I'm not sure what cheered me more, finding their medium is too big and I'm now a small, the staff member chasing after a man shouting "SIR SIR you can't go in there that's the women's changing room or his wife outside shouting "Pervert! You're a pervert John'!" at him.

Such fun

Boiledbeetle · 07/10/2026 13:41

And..

Oh my god! The steak and ale pie I picked up for lunch is divine!

LordEmsworthsGirlfriend · 07/10/2026 13:51

EdithStourton · 06/10/2026 22:57

<emerges from cellar>
I've found some Armagnac for @LordEmsworthsGirlfriend - will that do?

Batshit was herself this afternoon. In her pre-walk excitement, she half-fell down a step, ricocheted off a wall and then tripped over the back of my leg.

She made up for it 20 minutes later. I had them hunting a field of SFI mix, the sort that's meant to feed the birds, and she flushed a hare. She didn't chase at all, and had begun to sit down before I'd even blown the whistle.

Brains also flushed a hare. She also didn't chase, but she doesn't see the point of sitting down. She just stood there, rigid, as the hare scarpered for the woods. Batshit knows that sitting to flush is what good dogs do. Brains isn't nearly so bothered about being a good dog. Brains is concerned with bending me to her will as much as she reasonably can.

Brains, frankly, is a little shit. But I do love her - she is so much fun.

Perfect @EdithStourton , thank you so much. A generous chasing off the lurgi one would be great.

I'm out of touch but hope all goes well @MyrtleLion

RumNotRun · 07/10/2026 14:02

Well done Myrtle!

@Boiledbeetle I read that wrong at first and thought the staff member was talking to you!! But well done to her/him for challenging (and the wife 😁)

Fred has summed up how I feel about today. I know he's male so not allowed in here but he is basically a semi sentient marshmallow.

Good Lord that's very blue!

Chersfrozenface · 07/10/2026 15:09

I rather like that blue.

I need to grow my nails a bit to do it justice. Which means taking a bit more care of them. Still, I won't be doing anything very strenuous for a few days at least, so I can treat that as a project.

Just give the Ferguson grey a swerve and you'll be fine.
