Welcome to The Bluestocking, the best (perhaps only) online women's pub. Nothing in the food or drink can harm you, everything is served by a very enthusiastic crew of gerbils, who enjoy doing this and other interesting things. Any curious menfolk are welcome at the Staunch Ally down the road.

I do love you all, but there's something seriously wrong with a few of you... sort it out, please!

Agreed!

DauntlessDamson · 05/10/2026 14:33

Well, I'm very happy to see from your posts, Glad, that you are still "Compost Mintoes" after your altercation with something very hard, which definitely should not have been there, or should have moved when it saw you coming!Flowers

You're completely right, of course.

What do someone mean, doing so might have made the staircase collapse? Nobody was using at that tiny moment.

Agreed!

I'd blame my head injury, but I don't think it's made any difference.

That @AngleofRepose is telling on us in a JKR Feminism: Chat thread.

Anyway, for those of us who eat wheat and/ or drink beer, today's news is that drilling has started.

I am typing this to the squeak and rattle of the back field being given a once over by a harrow after Angus (as he is not actually called) spent the morning with the drill trundling along behind the Valtra. I think it's barley going in, because it was wheat last year, and a conservation cover crop the year before that (which left me with phacelia in my garden, but I don't mind as it has lovely foliage, very pretty flowers and is easy to uproot).

Fingers crossed for rain (but no floods and deluges) over the winter.

WearyAuldWumman · 05/10/2026 15:02

I still feel grotty and I'm still in my comfy Landsend long-sleeved nighty.

I heard machinery outside and there was a bloody great truck with wood, plus a trailer and some other machine right across the parking bay which extends across my driveway with dropped kerb. (Diagram not supplied.)

I hauled on a pair of leggings and trainers, staggered outside to the bloke with the hard hat: "Excuse me, can you tell me what's happening and how long you intend to be here?"

"I'm only loading this [machine] on the trailer and then I can go. Do you need out now?"

"No, not just now. It's fine if you're not going to be long."

Eff knows what I look like and I'm not going anywhere in this state but I'm tired of men thinking it's okay to park in front of my car just because it's an auld wumman that lives here.

I think I was wearing what DH used to refer to as my "Medusa look".

P.S. I have tried Marmite once in my life, a few months ago. Did not like it.

MarieDeGournay · 05/10/2026 15:37

When I'm catching up on threads I often work backwards, so one of the first I saw here was
I do love you all, but there's something seriously wrong with a few of you... sort it out, please!
and I momentarily thought Oh no, somebody said something out of place, and somebody got upset, and it's all going horribly wrong and Bluestockingers are fighting with each other and...
[drama-queen? moi? 😏]

So I'm glad that it was just calling other people's Weetabix-related opinions 'perverted', no big deal😁

What about a Tunnocks squashed between two Weetabixes with a layer of Marmite?
Why is everybody running towards the toilets, apart from those who are running towards me with contorted features and anything heavy they could grab?😧

Sending good wishes to those recovering from... stuff, I'll come back later and read through posts properly and send more targeted good wishesFlowers

That @AngleofRepose is telling on us in a JKR Feminism: Chat thread.

Shhhh... keep it on the downlow, and you'll be the richer for it... (I may have insider info, and she has a lot of cash!). shhhh...

WearyAuldWumman · 05/10/2026 15:46

I do love this place. That is all.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/10/2026 15:58

I think there are a few people here who need to see your Marmite collection, @Boiledbeetle.
Unless they’ve been culled in your throwout Shock ?

Vegemite is better.

Understood. Nothing to see here, ossifers.
Look in Feminism: Chat and you'll see there's nothing there.

because, once again, I've shown I don't know the difference between Chat and FWR

I like that very much. My brother (who emigrated over 40 years ago) used to describe my hair as "rats tails". I shall now mentally translate that as being part of a Medusa look. The surgical glue holding my scalp together means I'm not allowed to wash my hair for several days, so I'll attain peak Medusa quite soon.

WearyAuldWumman · 05/10/2026 16:34

Ouch. I've not had my scalp glued, but I remember it being done with Mum.

DauntlessDamson · 05/10/2026 16:51

I had surgical glue on my head when a garage door fell on me a few years back. It wasn't so much washing the hair, as trying to brush it that was the problem. I had a straight, shoulder-length bob at the time, with a fetching bird's nest on the top until the glue dissolved properly and could be brushed out.

Better taste (very subjective of course) and didn't cause skin irritation in small dribbly toddlers who loved their Vegemite soldiers.

Poor you, I hope that the care gerbils will provide tea and sympathy.

Yep, it's un-veggie. That's what is great about it. It's yeast extract and yeast is a fungus so vegetarians can eat it and enjoy the meat-like taste without having to eat meat.

As far as I know. I thought the existence of Vegemite meant that Marmite wasn't suitable for vegetarians, but the internet tells me it is.
I've been vegetarian for decades...

I was vegetarian for years (pescatarian now) and I flipping LOVE Marmite. I think Vegite was because the Aussies couldn't get Marmite for some reason (WW2? Something like that, anyway)

Like the Philippines and banana ketchup, it was invented because of supply interruption as I understand it.
