Welcome to The Bluestocking, the best (perhaps only) online women's pub. Nothing in the food or drink can harm you, everything is served by a very enthusiastic crew of gerbils, who enjoy doing this and other interesting things. Any curious menfolk are welcome at the Staunch Ally down the road.

Is it Howse? I couldn't be arsed searching.

Looks like it.

The derailer on the SP thread has been outed as a serial offender and seems to have disappeared, so it's probably safe to come out now - unless you hate all forms of breakfast cereal.

I'm getting a bit worried that the Gerbil Three don't have enough to eat😬

Hope those with lurgies or other physical symptoms are feeling better😷

They're back!!!

The derailer NOT the gerbils.

What do they eat, apart from seeds?

More seeds😄
I was going to say 'And Tunnocks crumbs' then I remembered the fanaticism enthusiasm of the Tunnock-eater ... crumbs? bwuah-ha-haha! leaving crumbs?

AngleofRepose · 05/10/2026 09:31

Bore da, everyone! It's cloudy, but with a hint of sun trying to make an appearance. Damp, it's just damp. I still have lots of "preparing for winter" things to get done in the garden and clearing the driveway (weeds, etc), cleaning windows, but not feeling motivated in this damp. I think I'll cook instead. And go for a walk.

I'm avoiding most of the threads at the mo. Nothing but derailing going on. I do wish people would not entertain the obvious derailing, but I know how difficult it can be.

Saw the wren at the bird bath yesterday! It never goes in, just looks at it. Perhaps it's too deep?

PS. I've never had Weetabix. I'm told it tastes like sand.

DeanElderberry · 05/10/2026 09:46

I loved Weetabix, in my memory I can still smell it, I loved the slightly glutinous texture, and now I can never eat it again because of the wheat allergy, life is so not fair.

With fridge cold milk and sugar was best.

DauntlessDamson · 05/10/2026 10:56

I'm just dipping in and out at the moment because I'm trying not to spend too much time on screens. I had cataract surgery on Friday and while I can now see very well in the treated eye, I still need a corrective lens for astigmatism in my other eye, which wasn't considered far enough developed for cataract surgery just yet.

So my old glasses still work for one eye but are distorted for the other one. I will be going to the opticians for a new prescription in the next couple of weeks.

One bright spark in my family suggested a monocle, but I don't want to look like one of the' Laydees' from Hinge and Bracket! Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 05/10/2026 11:01

Could you knock the glass out of the side which no longer works until then, Damson?

I used to quite often have it for breakfast as a child. I’d fill up the gaps between them with sugar and then add a minimum amount of milk so it didn’t dissolve much.
But then I developed a distaste for milk (I think a disgust reaction from the warm bottles in school peaking after one of the boys drank two and puked🤢) so I sometimes had one buttered instead.

Yes, that's one of the options, Errol, or I can ask the optician to put a clear glass lens into my existing frames.

BUTTERED?! 😮

Thehorticulturalhussie · 05/10/2026 11:19

Re colds and coughs, you may actually have covid or RSV. We thought we had a fluey thing but our village WhatsApp has quite a few people with covid. Unpleasant for about a week but I think only serious for those with some long term conditions.

Lots, to lubricate it. Ideally plus marmalade or marmite.

All the covid tests I still had have had to go in the bin. The clear solution bit in them had evaporated.

So I may have had, may have currently or may have Covid in the future and I'll never know!!

I'm sorry, it may sound unkind, but buttering Weetabix is perverted. Not a word I use lightly but 😮

At the later end of the Covid epidemic, when it was very easy to get free NHS Covid test kits, I found several had insufficient amounts of the clear solution to do a test even though they were well in date. I sometimes had to amalgamate or three two tubes worth into one to get a usable amount.

In that case I don't think the liquid had evaporated, there just wasn't enough in the first place. Suppliers being paid for a substandard product, I think.

I have heard of buttering Weetabix before. Perhaps it's disturbing trend.

Ah, but I can only dream of Weetabix, buttered or not.
I am reduced to buying Nutribix, which are smaller and thinner than Weetabix, and often £5 a box depending on where you buy it.

Is there a stock of Weetabix in The Bluestocking?

Glad reporting in to say many thanks to the kind Bluestockingers who posted after I'd walked into something very hard and bashed my head.

It's nearly 48 hours since it happened, and recovering well.

Good to know that you're getting better.
That sort of thing can leave you quite shaken up.

Of course. Gluten-free, but tastes just like the real thing.

Yes, thank you, I am still a bit shaken, so I am resting mostly.

Bluestocking Weetabix will help, I'm sure.

Well, I'm very happy to see from your posts, Glad, that you are still "Compost Mintoes" after your altercation with something very hard, which definitely should not have been there, or should have moved when it saw you coming!Flowers

Thank you.

I'm vegetarian: I think even here I swerve Marmite.

That's my excuse and I'm sticking with it.
