Healthiest and Unhealthiest relationships in songs?

As I was cleaning the house this morning I was musing on those songs that come on the radio that you've been singing along with for years where you suddenly actually listen to the lyrics and either think 'well you sound very sensible' or 'intervention. NOW'. Any one got any suggestions? The ones I came up with first were

Healthy - Respect by Aretha Franklin. I know it's a cliche, and the guy she's singing about sounds like borderline not a keeper frankly, but I love the line 'I ain't gonna do you wrong, cause I don't want to'. She's all in, but she's still telling him how she expects to be treated

Red buntingtastic - Never Gonna Give You Up - why wouldn't she get a full commitment from any other guy Rick, you gaslighting bastard?

Anyone else fancy whiling away some weekend time thinking up some examples?

(mumsnet's AI suggested a thread title of 'Songs that sound sensible or alarming once you really hear the lyrics' which I kind of love but decided not to go with!)

Joelene (RIP Dolly)

I was just about to type that. Why is it Jolene’s fault?

Isn't an extramarital affair usually deemed to be the fault of a person who, knowing another is married, nevertheless sets out to lure him or her away from his or her spouse? Mostly the Other Woman has a bad rep. I mean, yes, it takes two to tango, but it is usually one who initiates the dance.

CassOle · 13/09/2026 17:27

I agree with the posters upthread that Paul McCartney has written great love songs and great end-of-relationship songs.

I shouldn't miss out George, Let It Down and I'd Have You Anytime are beautiful. I think the latter was co-written by Bob Dylan.

The United States of America "I won't leave my wooden wife for you".

It was on the sampler album "The Rock Machine Turns You On", which is why I heard it. I think almost everything possible is wrong with this, so I hope it was some sort of joke, or taking a pop at hypocrisy, or something.

Now listen, Baby
And try to understand
That tying you is fine
And whipping you is grand
Now I just can't tell you
How much fun it's been
You make me feel twenty-five again
But I can't leave my wooden wife for you, sugar
I got a split level house with a wonderful view, sugar
A couple next door who do the things we do, sugar
And every Saturday we sit around the pool

If I should meet you on the street someday
I hope you'll understand me if I look away
It isn't that I'm ashamed about you and me
But I've got to consider my morality
And I won't leave my wooden wife for you, sugar
I got a split level house with a wonderful view, sugar
Three sweet kids and Yorkshire terrier, too, sugar
And I just couldn't stand it
When you come home late from school

Billy Joel has a dodgy lyric or two in his collection, but Tell Her About It is excellent advice.

And Goodnight My Angel is the most beautiful lullaby ever written.

Dolly addressed that very point in Just Because I'm a Woman (1968)

Now a man will take a good girl
And he'll ruin her reputation
But when he wants to marry
Well that's a different situation
He'll just walk off and leave her
To do the best she can
While he looks for an angel
To wear his wedding band
..
Yes, I've made my mistakes
But listen and understand
My mistakes are no worse than yours
Just because I'm a woman

MarieDeGournay · 13/09/2026 18:45

I don't like Billy Joel in general, but I love 'For the longest time', partly because it is such a doo-wap gem, and partly because of these lines -

I don't care what consequence it brings
I have been a fool for lesser things

Word to live and love by - however unwisely😁

Uricon2 · 13/09/2026 19:01

Hope this copies. A folk song but a sort of (justified) revenge gone wrong that is really quite funny

A narrative from a woman in what sounds like a nightmare relationship - I am I feel by Alicia's Attic

He said, "Angel, put that purple skirt on
You know it makes me hot"
He said, "Come on, come on, get on, get up
Look like you're enjoying my company"
Oh, and he said, "You can't change your world
You're another one of my fools
You were born to have my baby now
Don't cry, my precious one
'Cause I ain't got no sympathy for you"

And I am, I feel
Like I wanna bite his head off
Yeah, that'd be fun
'Cause I sure got an appetite
I click my heels together three times
They sparked a little, but nothing happened
And the big bad wolf's still in my bed

How about this for a positive relationship song? Sheryl Crow - Easy.

We said that summer we'd go down to Cancun
But no money makes that kind of hard to do
Forget the beach – I'd rather be here with you
Playing Croquet okay, maybe, that's not true

But you make it easy, easy, easy to get away
Sit in the sun and drink beer all day
Because it's easy, easy, easier anyway
Hey, who needs Mexico?
Baby, let's stay home

We'll put on bug spray and we'll lose our clothes
Put out the lawn chairs and turn on the hose
We'll play Jack Johnson, he's the new Don Ho
And we'll go surfing, surfing, we'll surf the radio

But you make it easy, easy, easy to get away
Sit in the sun and drink beer all day
Because it's easy, easy, easier anyway
Hey, who needs Mexico?
Baby, let's stay home

Drink margaritas and take in the sunset
Later on we'll slip up to our king size bed
And make love, love, sweet love

You make it easy, easy
Oh, yes, it's easy, easy

But you make it easy, easy, easy to get away
Sit in the sun and drink beer all day
Because it's easy, easy, easier anyway
Hey, who needs Mexico?
Baby, let's stay home

Let's get away baby
Oh, let's get away, baby
Oh
Go on a little holiday

I get goosebumps just reading the lyrics to Nick Cave's Into My Arms.

It's so beautiful and sort of respectful and quietly lovely.

Lehrer was a satirist and wrote that song precisely to show up all the songs in which a man is vile but for some reason that's ok. I mean, he also wrote "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park", and "So Long Mom, I'm Off To Drop The Bomb", but I am reasonably sure he was not in favour of cruelty to animals or of nuclear war. And then there is the Irish Ballad in which he is taking the piss mightily out of the whole American "it's Irish so it's great!" attitude. I am particularly fond of the last verse.

THE IRISH BALLAD
words and music by Tom Lehrer
About a maid I'll sing a song,
Sing rickety-tickety-tin,
About a maid I'll sing a song
Who didn't have her family long.
Not only did she do them wrong,
She did ev'ryone of them in,
Them in,
She did ev'ryone of them in.

One morning in a fit of pique,
Sing rickety-tickety-tin,
One morning in a fit of pique,
She drowned her father in the creek.
The water tasted bad for a week,
And we had to make do with gin,
With gin,
We had to make do with gin.

Her mother she could never stand,
Sing rickety-tickety-tin,
Her mother she cold never stand,
And so a cyanide soup she planned.
The mother died with a spoon in her hand,
And her face in a hideous grin,
A grin,
Her face in a hideous grin.

She set her sister's hair on fire,
Sing rickety-tickety-tin,
She set her sister's hair on fire,
And as the smoke and flame rose higher,
Danced around the funeral pyre,
Playin' a violin,
-olin,
Playin' a violin.

She weighted her brother down with stones,
Sing rickety-tickety-tin,
She weighted her brother down with stones,
And sent him off to Davy Jones.
All they ever found were some bones,
And occasional pieces of skin
Of skin,
Occasional pieces of skin.

One day when she had nothing to do,
Sing rickety-tickety-tin,
One day when she had nothing to do,
She cut her baby brother in two
And served him up as an Irish stew,
And invited the neighbors in,
-bors in,
Invited the neighbors in.

And when at last the police came by,
Sing rickety-tickety-tin,
And when at last the police came by,
Her little pranks she did not deny.
To do so she would have had to lie,
And lying, she knew, was a sin,
A sin,
Lying, she knew, was a sin.

My tragic tale, I won't prolong,
Sing rickety-tickety-tin,
My tragic tale I won't prolong,
And if you do not enjoy my song,
You've yourselves to blame if it's too long,
You should never have let me begin,
Begin,

A fellow Tom Lehrer fan! Fist bump!! Love that man's satirical songs and have done for 40 years...

(Have you come across 'Hanukkah in Santa Monica'? Mysteriously less well known but brilliant.)

redpickle · 13/09/2026 19:56

“Don’t Let the Bells End” by The Darkness. It’s got a festive vibe I guess musically but it’s all about this whiny bloke who doesn’t want Christmas to end because his partner will go back to work and not prioritise him. “You’ve got your career” “spent most of last year apart”. ICK!

hamnish · 13/09/2026 20:37

I think the main lyrical aim in Don’t Let The Bells End was to get the words ‘bellend’ and ‘ring piece’ into a Radio One playlisted song.

Justin Hawkins wrote some absolutely killer hooks, but then couldn’t resist a cheap double entendre. ‘Growing on Me’ - is he talking about love, or herpes? Etc etc etczzzzz

Lord lord, I hadn't heard that for years! One of the very few songs of his that I hear in my head with more than just a piano backing.

Thank you for sending me to the Lehrer on the server.

Pleased you like it.

May I also recommend the Gay Men's Choir of Los Angeles version and the adorable Jewish(?) family's Yiddish version. (Try searching for Khanike in Santa Monica on Youtube for the latter.) Mumsnet doesn't seem to like links...

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 13/09/2026 21:05

And what's more I have a link to an article about that song....

Well, sort of.

(And I think we may have Anne McCaffrey in common as well? She gave me a poster someone had done for The Crystal Singer but it eventually came to bits.)

That's so kind! Loved the article.

Sadly the five words of Yiddish I learned from the Jewish family's version (Oy, Emes, Baym Breg Yam) weren't quite enough for the article's vocabulary, but hey.

@MarieDeGournay yep, beautiful song, bit of a turn up for the books from Mick 'you could make a dead man come' Jagger

He must have nicked that from Big Mama Thornton: “I’ve got nipples on my titties as big as your thumb/a thing between my legs make a dead man come.” Good for her!

She was lovely, and sharp, and scathing, and funny, and yes, I was privileged to know her – as in, it wasn't just I would have recognised her if we came across each other in Leicester Square, she would have recognised me. (I had a friend that happened to while she was queuing for a flick, only it was Harry Harrison not AnnieMac, and he recognised her but she drew a complete blank on him and had to do that embarrassed "how ARE you?" dance until she finally clicked and was able to make sense.)

No, alas, no pics of the poster. Two house moves later and taking it off the wall was too much for it, and I hadn't thought to do anything to preserve it before that.

this is utterly gorgeous, what is it?

I love the lyrics (the good and the bad), this is like a thread of interesting poetry.

How nice to wake up to a string of posts this morning with loving, warm song lyrics

the gambler, by Fun, the title has nothing to do with the song incidentally
