Wanting to discuss trans people with non gender critical folks

I’ve been on another thread - and other threads - and I’d like to talk to anyone who believes that trans women are women and trans men are men.

I don’t understand how that works and I’ve tried on other threads to get engagement , and it hasn’t worked.

so. I’m starting a thread.

I promise I am asking genuinely and I really do want to debate.

I don’t understand how I can tell if a trans woman is genuine.

I don’t understand how the laws could be written to make it work.

I don’t understand how it works as it competes with sex based rights.

I will probably regret starting this but I’d really like to understand

OP posts:

You’ve come to the wrong place. Being gender critical is a protected belief which means it’s not dependent on evidence. Gender critical people have a pseudo-religious opposition to the scientific consensus on gender identity. It’s not something you can reason with.

The aim of this thread is surely for people who believe in this 'scientific consensus' to explain why they believe it over the whole of the history of human evolution?

Maybe show the OP which 'scientific consensus' you are talking about? Unfortunately you cannot include anything from WPATH after they recently admitted in a USA court they were making it all up and it was just all their 'opinions'. So anything from a different source would be fab. Thanks in advance.

HorseandHeron · 10/09/2026 10:53

To be honest though I think this is the wrong place to ask for views from people who are not gender critical. FWR is where mainly gender critical women hang out.

I think it's a great place to have this conversation. I am 100% behind protecting women's rights, 100% behind JKR. But I don't want that vehement understanding of what we stand to lose to blind me to what other people's needs are that don't match my own. I would love to hear from trans or pro-trans people who are willing to discuss the importance of respecting each other's rights and not creating battlelines.

DrBlackbird · 10/09/2026 10:58

an entire generation seems to believe that memes on tiktok and insta are more reliable sources than textbooks and reports written by experts.

Alas not only the younger generation but all generations are susceptible to this belief. Exploited and weaponised by cynical men manipulating politics.

@AnonyMumAuDHD what you said is ready interesting and something I’ve not thought about but yes can absolutely see that thanks to the prolific and successful efforts by TRAs to muddy the waters that many people are uninformed or misinformed by the pseudo scientific claims. Such that they come to believe there is no middle ground when we both hold what we understand to be fact-based truths.

It’s not something you can reason with.

The OP literally asked for points of reason that can be critically examined.

It is glaringly obvious that you are unable to bring any.

"People are what they say they are" sounds good but doesn't stand up to the slightest examination.

TPA (transparentlyannoyed) says “listen to trans people” whilst continuously ignoring the transman who posts on this board.

TPA says “trans people are who they say they are but some men pretend to be trans”.

TPA despite being told it’s about men not trans, continues to accuse the posters of this board of being transphobic bigots, however, Seethlaw, the transman mentioned above, says we are not transphobic and are just protecting women’s single sex provision. So, do we listen to trans people or not?

TPA proves that there isn’t one coherent argument for treating some men as women just because they say so.

Edited

TPA constantly refers to 'safe spaces' in TPA's posts instead of the accurate 'single sex spaces'.

If the accurate 'single sex spaces' were used, TPA's arguments would not hold up.

I also really really want to talk about what he did. But I can’t do that here. And that upsets me. I’m silenced. Which means I can’t explain just how important it is to me.

Pastebin or similar and link from here. Or a TwiX account. Google Doc, read-only share link.

Even if you write it down and decide not to share, just writing it down might help.

https://www.ptsduk.org/how-writing-can-help-people-with-ptsd/

It has been shown that writing (free writing, timed, for 15 minutes at a time) can be effective for alleviating symptoms of trauma.

I would suggest approaching it while you have a trusted therapist or friend to hand.

I have done this, for dv, and it really did seem to help.

Timed, 15 minutes each session, for five days in a row. Keep the hand moving. Write whatever comes to mind.

Allow for time afterwards to rest and regather.

This comes, I think, from this Pennebacker method.

Surely it is though, because TRAs are always visiting the board, yet at the same time, it probably felt a bit safer for the OP to post here than, say, joining a TRA reddit/other social media platform, because at least some here know her posting history (as per her post above, she was raped).

I don't believe this question would last ten minutes on Reddit.

Unfortunately, anyone dissenting from TWAW is banned very quickly.

TransParentlyAnnoyed · 10/09/2026 01:36

It's really simple.

Some people are different - and they cannot prove this difference, but it affects how they experience the world.

They may be gay, bi, ace, pan or trans. Or have a disability you don't understand because you can't see it and haven't experienced it.

So, listen to them.

if you don't understand trans people, then go and read their own words.

The key is this: do you accept someone's difference, or do you need it proved to you? If so, why?

Trans people are, quite simply, who they say they are. Accepting that you are trans or non-binary is usually a long process which often involves adopting other labels along the way.

If you are sincere, then thank you. But really, you don't have to understand people who are different, just accept them. I don't know what it's like to fancy a woman, or sleep with one - but I'd never question whether gay women exist because I can see that they do. Difference is normal, and I have no interest at all in asking: but why? Why do you exist?

Please ask yourself: would you ask all these questions of a gay person if you yourself are straight? I doubt it. You'd recognise how rude it would be.

The concept of "non-genuine" trans women is a transphobic myth. Trans women have jobs, lives and responsibilities - which they carry out while trans. That's it, that's what being a trans woman is.

A few cis men seem to have tried to gain access to female prisons, but for the most part there is absolutely zero advantage gained pretending to be a trans woman. 'Safe spaces' are a myth. The immense social pressure, difficulties negotiating medical transition, physical exhaustion and danger experienced by all out trans women should be obvious. Trans women are targeted for rape, harassment and violence.

Step outside the GC bubble and understand that trans people are normal humans. Yes, they might look different - so what? Repulsion at a visual difference isn't proof that someone shouldn't exist.

Being trans is normal.

Sexuality isn't gender.

Difference doesn't require an origin story.

Trans people are gay, straight, ace, bi, pan and more - just as straight people are.

Being trans is not a costume, it's who someone is. Plenty of trans people don't dress according to gender stereotypes - but if they dont, transphobic people ridicule them for not looking masculine or feminine enough. This is the point of declaring pronouns - my son often doesn't look trad masculine, but if he's misgendered at college, someone will say "they use he/him" and the reply is always a variant of "okay, cool".

Which, honestly, is great.

it's so difficult to live as an out trans person, that most would choose not to be trans. It makes life a lot harder. No one would be trans unless it meant everything.

Finally: do you remember when parents bombarded CBeebies with complaints because a presenter had limb difference? It was claimed that by being on-screen acting like it was normal to be visibly disabled she was traumatising children. That was repulsion at difference. And, if course, this was exactly why it was so important she was onscreen: to teach children that difference was normal, and didn't need to be interrogated.

So much of transphobia is anger at visual difference. Getting past that, is the first part of the battle. Interrogate why you can't just accept this difference, but need it explained. Why can't you just believe trans people exist, and leave it at that? They're a tiny, oppressed minority, not ever likely to affect your life.

You seem like a good person, and I'm really sure if you met someone trans you'd just chat to them without needing to know anything about their bodies or sex life. You'd talk to them like they were normal, judging them on whether they were friendly or kind - just like anyone else.

Read their own words please. And, thanks.

So many words, so much nonsense. Also, lumping trans identifying men in with lesbians is the very epitome of homophobia.
A lesbian would no more find a trans identifying man a suitable dating partner than a non trans identifying man, because she’s same sex attracted. We no more need to ‘accept’ that a man who declares himself a woman is indeed a woman than we need to accept that a person who identifies as a cat is indeed a cat, or a 50 year old who identifies as a baby is indeed a baby.

HorseandHeron · 10/09/2026 10:44

I'm half-way. I believe that for the most part transmen are transmen and transwomen are transwomen. I do not for one moment think this makes them exactly the same as bio men or women, but nor do I think it is as simplistic as saying they are necessarily mentally ill and confused. That used to be said of gay men and women. I don't know how another person's identity is formed and what feels right or wrong to them, so I don't have the right to dictate who they are. (Any more than they have the right to dictate how women respond to the erosion of our recently won and very fragile rights to safety and privacy.)

What I have noticed, and need to be honest about, is that while theoretically I am very heavily on the side of women's rights, in reality I know several transmen and one transwoman and I simply can't imagine most of them as their bio sex. Even though the transwoman is very masculine in many ways, in my mind they are 'she'. A friend's daughter transitioned and at the time I was very worried for her. But now, if I pass them in the street, I see her son, I think of him by his new name, he looks like a man. I do still have some concerns that there may be a change of heart at some point, or that the daily need for drugs will cause health issues down the line but I have insufficient understanding of what it is like to be in that person's skin to say unequivocally that not undergoing treatment would be a better life for him.

In the end, the only things I feel fiercely about are

  • that self-ID should not be forced upon us when there are so many cases of men abusing transrights solely to gain access to vulnerable women;
  • that teens are given proper support regarding body dysmorphia, suicidal ideation, autistic social anxiety etc and not funnelled into irreversible processes before they are mentally completely well and adult
  • and that transwomen cannot compete in bio women's sports. Because they are not and never will be bio women
  • people being bullied, harassed, losing their jobs, being sent hate mail and threats in the name of transrights. This level of state-condoned coercive behaviour skates too close to that of oppressive regimes.

Those things aside, honestly, I don't care if legitimate transwomen use the same public loo as me, and I am happy to respect what name and pronouns people go by, don't give a damn what clothes other people wear and think it is important to live and let live, which is a right that comes with the responsibility not to foster hatred or retaliation where none is needed.

Can I ask - where do you stand on men in women's prisons, rape support services, dv services, changing rooms?

Okay, if you’d genuinely like debate can I please explain how it was explained to me? I’m not saying this is right or wrong, this is just how it was explained to me by a trans person:

You know how you know you’re a woman? And that feeling goes beyond how you dress and where you go to the toilet? You just know you’re a woman? Some people have that certainty but aren’t in the body that aligns with what they’re certain they are. Imagine you were still absolutely you but tomorrow woke in a man’s body. You get up, find a feminine outfit, groom yourself according to womanly beauty standards. But you’d be in a man’s body. For trans people they can often have that realisation, but for them it’s not quite so abrupt, it’s something they realise as they come to a point in their life where they feel certain about who they are. So they dress etc according to the gender they feel deep down they are.

As for your question of how do you know of people are genuine: you can’t. Just like you can’t know that anyone you meet and tells you their story isn’t fabricating who they are. It’s up to us to decide whether we choose to take people earnestly and at face value or if we are critical of what we believe cannot be decided in that way.

These are not my opinions, just how it was explained to me and I’m trying to answer OPs original question.

Woman isn’t a feeling, it’s a state of being brought about by being born female and reaching adulthood.

John Money was heralded for introducing ‘gender identity theory’ by lying about his ‘research’ and has now been massively discredited.
WPATH have also been discredited worldwide for lying about the impact on people with a diagnosis of gender dysphoria in order to make it seem that medication and surgery is the answer to their distress.

HINT: the answer to anyone who is suffering a mental health illness such as gender dysphoria is not chopping bits of their bodies off or going along with their delusions. People with anorexia have body dysmorphia but you would no more tell them that yes, they are indeed overweight and should continue to starve themselves than you would tell them to jump off a bridge!

@Taztoy hi taz, I am sorry to read about your experience. I really am. Like a massive amount of women on this board and thread, I am also a survivor of male violence and sexual violence. Sadly we all have our stories to share but can’t always express them online because even though that would be the ideal way to get it out, especially for the neurodivergent community, we don’t want to be writing our traumas to end up in the wank banks of some sexual sadists. Maybe one day there will be a way of verifying who we say we are and having an anonymous space, but with guaranteed privacy. I do know other survivors who’ve found other women who’ve experienced similar attacks and rapes who’ve started facebook groups to share their experiences.

I don’t have a fully concrete reply to your trans question. I have 3 trans friends in my close friendship group. 2 TW and 1 TM.
I will share this, 2 of them are also survivors of CSA and the other was beaten so badly by their father for appearing to be gay, that the shame of their sexuality has been a burden until a later in life transition. And honestly that transition hasn’t made them any happier. (I’ve used they/them so I don’t use their pronouns, for anonymity and also I don’t want them to upset anybody)

I have worked closely with TW before also, who have been sex workers. This was over 25 years ago now. I believe they transitioned because women treated them with kindness, as where men abused them. These people had profound mental health problems.

I personally don’t believe a trans man is a man or a trans woman is a woman. My belief is they’re their own person, a trans man or a trans woman. And I think that they have their own lived experiences that I as a woman can’t relate to, the same way that my TW friends can’t related to periods, pregnancy, endometriosis, I can’t relate to hating having my body so much that I’d go through countless surgeries to change it. That I’d endure bigotry and abuse from the public, just to no longer say I’m a woman.

The trans issue is incredibly nuanced in my personal opinion. So when people say “genuine trans woman”, what they mean is a trans woman who isn’t a predatory male, using the guise of trans to access women’s spaces in order to cause women harm.
Or the men who crossdress for sexual pleasure, not because they have a deep affinity with womanhood and believe they’re in the wrong body, but because they get a kick out of it.

My personal belief is women deserve a protected space just for biological women. Whilst I’m happy to share with TW others aren’t so my opinion is irrelevant of what I’m comfortable with. Other women who aren’t deserve their spaces protected.
The problem is if men want to use our toilets, they could say they’re TM now, big, beefy, bearded TM and access our spaces that way. And yes someone will say, “you can always tell”, well I am sorry but I can’t. I’m sure there are ways to tell but I’m not able to personally.
Men have found ways to attack us and rape us, abuse and kill us without the need of being in bathrooms with us, without being in our changing rooms or even our prisons. I worry that we need to shift that focus back. We will always be raped by men. No matter what they’re wearing, if a man wants to rape a woman, that man will find a way.

I do think there is a lot of hate and bigotry towards TW especially. And that is because often the loudest TW voices have been from a place of disingenuous reasons to be in our spaces. Lots of TW have publicly been noted to have been paedophiles, women abusers and other such problematic individuals. They would not be what I class as genuine TW.
But I am asked, “how can you tell” and I say simply, you can’t. The same way poor posters on here have been married 17 years to perfect Peter and then discovered through an iCloud message he’d been sleeping with escorts/downloading CSAM etc, you can’t always tell a predator. Which is why I think the TW hate needs redirecting because the stories I know from TW are plainly horrifying. Their are so many TW victims who need protection from men, but that isn’t the job of only women, it’s the job of everyone who isn’t a fucking predatory man to work together and find a solution for. I know I’ll get backlash for that, that’s ok, but everyone has a responsibility of safeguarding. We need to protect everyone from predators. That’s my opinion, I don’t care how you present or look or dress, the fight shouldn’t be between women/TW/feminist/TERF (not using as a slur, I don’t believe it is a slur btw) but we need to all accept the world is changing. Trans people have existed for centuries and they are a small minority of the population, predators however are a large percentage. We should be able to protect one another. Do you have to believe that a person can change biological sex? No, I don’t and I love my Trans friends. Do you have to treat people with respect? Absolutely, even if you disagree.

I have spoken at length about my uncle who suffers psychosis. He is allowed out and about and visits the same few places locally to him. The local cafe, the market, sometimes pops into the older people coffee mornings. He is in his early 50s and harmless but believes that he partied with the Beatles, that he was best friends with the Rolling Stones, that he had a fling with Kylie Minogue. All absolute bollocks of course. People just say, “lovely to see you Ken, send ringo our regards” make him a brew and send him on his way. I’m not saying that we should pacify Transfolk the same way but the kindness of not belittling them when out in the community should stand. I’ve been with my friend (TW) and had people walk past us and say, “hello Madame, to me, then, hello sir”, just to be cruel. That needs to stop.

The world is a cruel and dangerous and shitty place for those of us who want to live with peace, dignity and fearlessly away from violence and sexual violence. We are living in times where AI images are being made of the daughters and grandchildren of deeply fucked up peadophiles, where domestic abuse is on the rise, women are being subjected to scrutiny and harassment online for not looking like they’re made by the same creators as Barbie. There is so much hate and prejudice towards women and I worry that energy is being wasted with the hate that is going to TW. Maybe the push back should be towards men who want to hurt us regardless of what they present as, and more so the damage they wish to cause us. Because not every TW is a threat and no you can’t always tell, but those men out there sharing red pill propaganda or being exposed as a domestic abuser, they are the worst threat and they’re getting a very easy ride comparatively to a TW who does just want to exist.

I'm sorry to hear about your experiences. Flowers And it's really helpful to see your arguments laid out, so thanks.

The problem is if men want to use our toilets, they could say they’re TM now, big, beefy, bearded TM and access our spaces that way.

The Supreme Court judgment specifically talked about how if a woman had taken such steps to make herself look convincingly male, she could be excluded from women's spaces. This was part of their reasoning for recommending third (fourth) spaces.

I've been followed into a ladies' loo by a crossdressing man, who then masturbated at the sink. So, I have direct experience of sexual assault in exactly the instance in question. From a man who used a 'trans' identity (a cheap wig, some lippy, and a skirt) as cover to access a young girl in an enclosed space when vulnerable (I was a teenager).

But let's zoom back a bit.

Men are larger and stronger than women. Men commit 99% of all sex crimes, and 80% of all violent crime.
Women (and children) are, at a population level, at risk from men. That's really not in question, is it?

As we are civilised, we have rules and laws to protect people from predators, criminals, and violent people. We also have rules and laws to help those who experience disadvantage (people with protected characteristics) achieve equity.

Predators will go to extraordinary lengths to access victims and undermine boundaries, yes. This is exactly why we need rules, laws, conventions etc. They provide a modicum of protection for women. And the argument that some will break laws isn't an argument for removing the law.

If an ideology undermines the rules of law and the rights of women that have been put in place to protect women (and/or children), then I will fight that movement every step of the way. Because the rule of law and societal conventions and the social contract are how women and children are protected.

I don't really care how a man chooses to live his life, what he chooses to wear, what he does with his hair.

But when he goes after my rights, I will fight back. Women need our rights, and many (most) of use refuse to concede them just because some men want to access our spaces. I don't really care what the men's arguments are, to be honest. If they are trying to undermine or diminish my legal rights, I'm not interested in their feelings. Only in ensuring that my rights, and my daughter's rights, and my elderly mother's rights, are protected.

When I see you quote me I think, uh oh, mama coming to set me straight here, I’ve said something wrong! That’s a compliment, I love your posts and writing very much. I always hope I’ve not said something daft.

I’m sorry that happened to you. Absolute fucking psychotic behaviour to do that.
I had a similar experience as a teenager, minus the cross dressing aspect, I hope you don’t mind me telling you about, on the back of the bus, some big massive bastard chose the seat next to me and took his penis out and started masturbating. I shouted down to the front of the bus, the driver slammed down and ran to the back of the bus, dragged this bloke, punched him in the face and asked me did I want to drop him off in the middle of nowhere/call the police or just get home to mum. I chose the latter. We were the only passengers. That was my bus home from work, so I took the same route 3 times a week. About 10 days after that happened a few stops away I was on the bus and I used to put my head down on the seat in front of me. (Also, this is really outing, so if anyone knows me irl hello!) So the bus stops, then waits at the red light. That was when the bus window went through, I was covered head to toe in glass and blood, the driver screamed because I was so covered in blood. He thought that the crowbar that put the window in had gone into my head but actually besides shock I was fine, the glass is that shatter glass so whilst I was full of blood it was from teeny little shards, not anything enough to seriously cut my skin. The driver rang my mums pal for me, she came and met me at the hospital, my mum was working nights and I didn’t want to bother her. I do think even now, it was probably the big old wanker who did that, being a dumb teen, I never changed my route, never changed my seat even. And I had seen him prior to the masturbating incident, I’d never said hello or anything to him, just seen him loitering around the off licence near the bus stop. The police never found the person who smashed the window or the big fella to question him. As a teenager I had loads of these kind of situations, things I could talk about on here up until about 22/23. As soon as I looked more like an adult it stopped. Young girls are so at risk from these horrendous creatures.

I didn’t know TM were still able to access men’s toilets, that’s safer for women but still bizarre. The fourth space needs to happen. And many men and women will use it out of ease, those who don’t care, so it’s not like it’s only being for a small minority, it’s there so a larger minority can feel safer.

I think a massive problem is what you’ve said, you don’t care how people choose to present. I feel the same, but others do and that’s when the argument of women’s safety and rights can get lost. How other people present isn’t our business as long as they’re not exposing themselves. I often think back to poor wee Sophie Lancaster, murdered for how she presented. When people throw slurs at TW it takes away the credibility of why we need safe spaces away from men.

Trans people aren’t going anywhere, predators aren’t going anywhere, safety is paramount and we need that fourth space.

It works on the same way that betty from basildon believes that she is Cleopatra, Queen of the Nile and has the power to rule the land and put people to death.
do you think betty should get to kill her neighbour Bill in line with her belief?

Exactly this. People don’t get to impose their beliefs on everyone else. Which is the single most difficult and upsetting departure from reality of this entire movement.

Lawren, you’re thoughtful and kind, and as a fellow survivor I’m sorry for what you went through, but you’re also quite naive. TIMs are not Sophie Lancaster and gender critical women are not her attackers, whether they laugh at ridiculous looking men pretending to be women or not. That’s a false picture that enables abusive men.

TIMs are men. Men are highly more likely to be violent and motivated by sexual interest. No, they’re not all sexual predators but their presence in women’s spaces is a violation in and of itself. It’s a boundary violation. They know most women don’t want them there. And that’s a red flag. Even your friends.

Men like the ones we are talking about, many of them actively get sexual gratification from making women uncomfortable. That doesn’t always escalate, but sometimes it does. And when that isn’t enough, it’s not only our privacy and dignity at stake.

I appreciate your kindness, thank you. I do hate the idea of mocking anybody for their presentation and I do probably over think it that if we allow the mockery of TW, (sorry I’m not sure what a TiM is?) then will that ever embolden the wrong people who will take it to far and physically harm a trans person. We can’t be too careful in my opinion about spreading hate. You’re of course right it’s a different situation to the Sophie Lancaster comparison, it just does really concern me that when hatred for something different spirals, tragedy such as that happens.

For the women who don’t want TW in their spaces, I stand with those women, even over my friends and they understand my reasoning. They both use disabled toilets due to disability anyway these days, not just to keep out of the way.
It’s sad really because of men wanting to harm women, that we must be suspicious and scared of them at all times, but they’ve done this and we must act with our safety first, not the feelings of TW.
It’s hard for me to say that because I have always wanted to be respectful to others regardless of their presentation but my concern for women and children comes first always, hence why I do enjoy this board and learning from the posters here x

Men murdered Sophie and put her boyfriend (Robert?) into a coma. Not women, gender critical or otherwise.

The problem faced by goths and the trans-identifying alike is male violence.

Yes, my worry is that if we normalise being dreadful about the presentation of others. (Such as TW getting abuse) then the boundaries are lowered in the way it was normal for goths and emos to be abused. I appreciate its male violence, I really do, but I think by being unnecessarily cruel about people’s appearance we embolden men who are already looking for a reason to incite violence. It’s the chain of causation that really concerns me with male violence. I don’t want anybody getting hurt.

Shedmistress · 10/09/2026 16:08

Coming back to one point, I am a woman in her late 50s.

If I woke up tomorrow in a man's body, there is zero way id take my new penis into a female toilet. Id use the urinals in the gents, remembering to use my other hand to unzip.

The thought of using the ladies with my new man's body is absolutely not what would happen in this thought experiment.

trans people and their allies have issued death threats, rape threats and violence to women. I assume you’re going on trash Reddit and bluesky to tell them to stop it? If not, why not? Why come and tell women to be nice and not the people issuing threats?

What a horrible and terrifying experience. Well done for shouting out, and good on that bus driver. The rage of abusive men can be so spectacularly awful.

I think just about everyone reasonable can agree that nobody should be slurred or attacked. Predators and abusers should be dealt with through the proper channels.

Kindness is an interesting thing though. Sometimes it means being brave, and sometimes it means saying 'no'.

Transmen can't use the men's toilets. The FWS judgment said they can be asked to use unisex facilities instead of the women's if available but not that they should use the men's.

@Taztoy Why the use of the word "folk" and not "people"?
