Schoolgirls have been left "in tears" after a controversial new uniform rule was enforced at the start of the school year, with furious parents claiming some pupils were stopped from attending lessons.

The row has erupted after Co-op Academies Trust introduced a trousers-only policy across its secondary schools from September.
Some families have refused to accept the change, with pupils at Co-op Academy Failsworth in Oldham arriving for their first day back on Wednesday wearing skirts.

Parents claim that a number of Year 11 girls were not allowed into class, with other pupils affected when they returned on Thursday.

The policy also applies at Co-op Academy Walkden, Co-op Academy Swinton, Co-op Academy North Manchester, Co-op Academy Manchester and Co-op Academy Belle Vue.

As always, its the few that spoil it for the majority.

But practically, schools cannot ban individuals from wearing skirts. And as you can see from the nonsense spouted on here, it would be considered "victim blaming" if they did. The whole reason schools can't stop the girls rolling skirts up past their bum cheeks is because all too often the parents come marching in accusing the teacher of perving on their teenage daughter.

So if teacher's are not allowed to correct the issue, the school finds a way to prevent the issue all together.

How on earth did schools manage in the past? Girls have been rolling up skirts since the 1960s. It is almost a right of passage tbh. Make girls wear shorts under their skirts if it such an issue.

a lot of my daughter’s school play sports and their sports skirts are often tiny. But they have shorts sewn in so all modesty preserved.

Trousers are default men’s clothes. Once again, “unisex” means something male that women are allowed to have. Funny how it never works the other way!

Unless you know of a type of trouser that comes attached to its own penis, I’m confident in saying that trousers are, in fact, not male.

@IwantToRetire
In the name of 'equality' lets
Make it so all the boys have to wear kilts.......

Absolutely not! The last thing I need when walking upstairs is a rogue bollock hanging out from under a rolled up kilt centimetres from my eyes alongside all the gussets and thighs.

OtterlyAstounding · 07/09/2026 21:47

I’m bewildered by the Victorian notion that girls simply can’t wear trousers lest they faint/their bottoms won’t fit/they won’t look flattering enough/it’ll turn them into men. Have I time-travelled? Is it no longer the year of our Lord 2026?
Women of all shapes and sizes have been wearing trousers as part of work uniforms or daily wear for generations, and there are many trouser options that are designed to fit women perfectly comfortably.

And if a girl decides not to follow the rule and wear shorts underneath?

Again...any reprimand or request to follow the rule will result in the teacher being accused of perving.

The difference now is mainly the lack of respect for teachers and education in general.

Exactly, Im not suggesting parents go out tomorrow and buy this in duck egg and red and rock up to school!!!!

Lol, Im very much enjoying the range of ridiculous problems raised about simple solutions

Neither am I. The barrier is the school accepting Halara pinafores as a uniform as opposed to the itchy heavy polyester twill version.

I said "that's great, as long as...", which tells you that I don't object to it as a uniform option.

Why on earth do girls have to look like boys? They are not boys and if they like skirts, what’s wrong with skirts? Heads should be concerned with improving education, not dictating all girls wear trousers!

Since when does wearing trousers make you 'look like a boy' how ridiculous 😂
When i was at secondary school NO girls wore skirts because the fashion then in the late 90's was to wear black flared trousers. Didnt realise we all looked like boys!!
Its just a uniform. In the workplace there are plenty of employers who mandate trousers as part of a uniform usually for safety or hygiene reasons, im pretty sure female surgeons wear trousers.
My daughter prefers to wear a skirt but if her school changed the uniform, she would simply wear the trousers. It really is not that difficult to buy trousers for different shapes and sizes, boys are all different shapes and sizes and somehow miraculously manage to buy trousers.

Again, not all girls. It is shaming all girls.

have the girls buy skorts. Solves the problem.

The shorts are sewn in FFS. Read the post you are replying to.

They have brought this on themselves.

I am sick and tired of seeing school girls going around with skirts, so short, you can literally see their knickers and arse cheeks hanging out the back of it. It's not even deliberately looking. It's in your line of sight walking down the high street.

It's absolutely indecent and it's not empowering. School is a professional environment where you go to learn and obtain qualifications. They wear a uniform it's not a fashion parade. No woman would be permitted to remain at work dressed like that with her knickers on display so why is it ok at school.

I think young girls and women would do well to remember that dressing in such a way is no more empowering than wearing a burqa. Both are geared up to the needs and wants of men.

If there are in tears over it, they need to grow some kind of backbone. Crying over not being able to wear a skirt to school - is that is. They can wear a skirt at any other point in their own time. It's hardly a tragedy.

Yes, this, teachers cannot guaratnee a parents support when children are told off and told to put their uniform back in the right way

Now, the parent would be marching up the school shouting about safeguarding and ofsted and her child's 'rights'.

Well of course a school wont accept a brand name item as a school uniform. I posted them to show how a pinafore can work without the straps falling down, it was an example of a design, nothing more, nothing less. Not an example of fabric or colour

So nothing you can object about, and yet you try so hard to. Well done!!

I'm surprised by people being angered by this. I remember when (in the early 2000s) girls and their families were fighting to wear trousers, because forcing the girls to wear knee-length skirts all year round was considered sexist and impractical. My school eventually let girls wear trousers in the autumn and winter terms, and I loved that, as I hated being forced into skirts.

Can you really not see that campaigning for the right to choose trousers isnt the same as being forced to wear trousers?

I in fact did say at the end of my comment that calf-length skirts should be available too. But considered practically all women will wear trousers, then on balance, forcing girls to wear trousers due to issues with uniform compliance seems proportionate.

(I do sympathise with the idea that it's unfair to make parents who have spent money on uniform skirts have to spend all over again on trousers, though. Perhaps phasing the shorter skirts out would be fairer.)

And the sewn in shorts in a skort prevent someone choosing to wear a normal skirt?
Its not like teenagers ever push boundaries and try to get away with wearing the wrong thing, is it?

If that was the case, mandatory trousers wouldn't be needed!

Mischance · 07/09/2026 21:53

In tears! - dear me!

If the girls had not been rolling their skirts up so you can see their knickers and teachers had not been having to waste time policing this then probably the whole idea of trousers would not have come up in the first place.

The decision not to purchase trousers wasn't the girls' decision, but their parents'. Yet the girls are sent home.

The girls are being punished for their parents' deeds. I'd be crying at the unfairness of it too.

Those Halara dresses can only be that reasonable and comfortable design because of the light soft fabric. You cannot replicate that design in heavy poly twill.

Tell me that you don't sew without telling me...

It was never an issue when I was at school and any such girl replying as such would have been told to not be so ridiculous!

The same when I was a pupil...but not when I was a teacher.

I'd prefer for girls to have the choice - I'd have been miserable wearing trousers when I had a period - I had endometriosis and needed to wear heavy duty sanitary wear which might have shown through trousers.

Sensible rules for both skirts and trousers would solve any issues. When I was still working, girls' school 'trousers' could be even more problematic than skirts. There was a fad for low slung 'school trousers' at one point, often worn with bright red thongs poking out the top.

We'd also get girls wearing 'leggings' which to my mind were no different from the black woollen tights we used to wear under our school skirts in the '70s. Of course, the 'leggings' would be worn without a skirt and the underwear would show through.

When staff spoke to the girls, there would be angry retorts that the clothing had been bought from the 'Back to School' sections of the local stores.

Our HT refused to risk speaking to the girls. The fad only stopped when our Head Boy gave a dramatic scream of "My eeeeeeyes!" when one of the S3 girls bent over a desk, thus showing off the top off her thong to all and sundry.

And the poor teacher who sends them home just has to suck up the accusation of "looking". It doesn't matter if the parent makes a formal complaint or the teens just spread rumours. It's a horrible accusation to make about someone trying to do their job.

Girls get home for wearing trousers that are too tight all the time. Are they going to be accused of ‘looking’ too?
